Driving like Idiots!!!!Maine Rally

You are spectators not rally drivers!!!
Well once again I have seen the same behavior and this time it nearly killed someone.
A rally blue wrx (spectator car) crashed in Maine at the rally with five people on board.
I spoke with some guys that were the first on the scene and they said the car was on fire and the kids were not getting out.
They were lucky that someone pulled them out because the only salvagable part on the car after the fire was th rear passenger side wheel!
I say this to the Driver...Get a clue or get a Rally car.
The next incident I was on a stage 5&7 pulling out my teams Sti 5(I was crew chief)
when three Subarus including a green RS came around a corner sideways toward us.
let me remind you that when sweep goes through the stage it is an open road and you can easily meet someone coming in to check on their rally car or even pedestrians.
Grow up guys, this behavior is bad for the reputation of the sport.

I agree with everything you say about the speeds being kept low.
The accident is being discussed at length in the New England Forum. However the 'facts' on the accident from what you post and what other witensses saw are quite different. There were 3 people in the car, which was from Canada (chances of emember being on here are slim to nil). One male driver and 2 females. Females asked repeatedly for driver to stop going fast when according to the girls, the driver had to dodge an animal like a horse , which was probably a moose. (Definitely a reason to keep speeds down).
Also this happens EVERY year up there. Last year there was an 'incident' with the M ver. X5 owned or driven by the people from Vermont Sports Car. (Which surprised me when I heard about it because they of all people should have known better about passing people and driving erratically.)

FYI: no one at Vermont SportsCar does, or has ever, owned a M version X5. Nor were any team members ever in that vehicle at Maine.

Actually, the rear diff looked OK as well. The car certainly was a mess though...
I still can't figure how he rolled it at that place. Any local moose should have been deep in the woods given all the extra traffic and noise this weekend.

Ok, so maybe the person that saw it happen with this report:
Last year, it was some dickhead from VT Sports Car in his M version X5, trying to be a badass and pass 10+ Subarus. I know, because I was in the middle of the pack when he didn't make it pass all the cars before the oncoming traffic. And I was nice enough to let him cut into the middle of the pack right in front of me.
was mistaken. It can happen.
The point is, there always has been SOME KIND of incident up there for the past few years.

KC, I know what car your referring to....it has a vt sportscar sticker on the back window... it doesn't mean they are employees.
Vermont SportsCar takes that stuff seriously. It has been our mission to grow the sport of rallying and be an ambassador for the sport. We shake our heads in disgust when we see spectators speeding along the transits and acting like idiots.
And I commend you guys for taking a stand and calling out these individuals who just don't get it.

Now, AV Sport on the other hand... ;)
I agree...leaving a stage at STPR (as a worker) I passed at least 2 cars in the ditch. They're lucky it wasn't the other side of the road, they'd have probably ended up unconscious, upside-down in the stream, 30 feet down the bank. If the trees didn't stop them first...
Too bad, every spectator doesn't read these forums. And of those that do, there's always a few who believe "yeah, I agree that should apply to everyone else, but I'm a better driver than they are."

Hey at rim same thing except Gary Cavet's rally was ended on the transit to the first stage when a guy side swiped him and bent one of his control arms. Frankly we are always nervous on transit since there are so many people flying around at the bigger events. JP enlighten us on your opinion on AV sport I am interested to learn what you are referring to.

At Gary's expense, I was going to say that crash in Maine was unusual because the spectators typically hit Gary's car (I know he wasn't there).

If they were first on scene they should have told you one male driver and two female passengers, not five people on board. This story is getting a life of its own. Hey, didja hear about that spectator car up in Maine that swerved to miss hitting a guy riding a moose, rolled 15 times and caught fire? Yeah, there were five passengers, all supermodels! Oh, and he lost it because he was running on shaved R-compunds! OK, maybe I'm harsh, but the rumormill is alive with this one. I've heard that they swerved to miss a guy on horseback, there were five passengers and he was running on shaved R-compounds. It sucks that he crashed and I can understand your rant, but check the facts before ranting. ;)
On a side note, the guy on horseback was riding through service and blasted up the access road, so I assume he was an emergency worker trying to cut through the woods to get there. He had gone up the access road in a car shortly before ambulances started showing up, came back, snagged a horse, then blasted up there again just after ambulances rolled through service.

If the event organizers can't behave, how can you expect spectators to? I was in a line of three cars pulled off to the side of the SS10 access road when a sweep SUV filled with retired drivers came blasting around the corner, dove into the oncoming lane to miss us and then almost took out the Sheriff who was coming up the road in the opposite direction. Lots of brake lockup, a quick swerve and a very annoyed Sheriff later, the Sheriff then asked if we were alright and to see if we needed directions.

| akuhner | 08-06-2003 09:19 AM |
No, the hood was stacked next to it when I went to take pictures. It was an amazing sight tho. The only belt left was the timing belt, which you could see because the covers melted away. All the wires were melted down to the metal, and the some of the wheels were partially melted away.

That is quite a common occurance. But the best part is that the Speedvision crew use a Volvo XC70 Wagon with 17" Michilen Pilot Sport tires. Oh oh, and last year they apparently had the tires rotated before coming up, but the idiots didn't pay attention to the fact that the tires are DIRECTIONAL!!!! So they had two tires that were going the correct direction, and two that weren't.

Those spectators need to go to some defensive driving classes or something .. That crash looked awful, that charred skeleton of a WRX... Burnsie wasn't even half that bad.
Club Rally just got reinstated, we don't need any more bad press like this for the sport, especially this year. Although the spectators help make Rally what it is, they shouldn't be driving like maniacs on transits. If they can't behave themsleves, there will be more action taken by the sanctioning body to keep them even further from the stages. It's bad enough when one of the top drivers in Pro Rally has a fatal crash during a race, but a spectator crash like THAT on a transit, what the...???
Any of you on this board that either rally or spectate, please, please, take it easy on the transits, for safety's sake and the sake of the sport. If every time a Rally is held, someone either gets seriously hurt or killed, in the event or worse, on the transit, it wont be long, and there will be no more Rally for us to enjoy...
If you want to Rally, go to rally school or build a rally car, or both, but please don't get your jollies racing around on busy transits on street tires, the risks are way too great for everyone. ;)
