Thats pretty creative, awsome! But kills some of the, already too small, trunk space, lol.
tvblue22 03-20-2006 12:37 AM

Looks good. Great idea.
SubeSTIle 03-20-2006 01:21 AM

very nice idea. i hate not having a full size spare. may do that when i have some extra cash floating around for an extra wheel.
SLIGHTLY 03-20-2006 01:21 AM

Might want to think about putting a strap around it so it wont bounce and shift around.
TygerStile 03-20-2006 01:35 AM

Nice work, but is there anything actually holding the tire down? I wouldn't mind doing that, but I'm already short on trunk space with the rear strut bar and v-brace.
krambte79 03-20-2006 08:57 AM

fits pretty snug, surrounded by fiber board and carpet up high and most of the tire sits
in the spare well, ill have to get back to you guys on how it does w/ bouncing and corners, im hoping the weight and surround security will keep it tight enough
SPOOLN 03-20-2006 09:28 AM

Nice. Just have to find a 5th wheel.
Dystinct 03-20-2006 09:28 AM

Looks good man.
NoCalSubie 03-20-2006 12:40 PM

That's a old mod from the Honda folks. You might want to turn the wheel over so you don't scratch up the wheel and plus you can throw stuff in there. Clean job.
dcoty 03-20-2006 06:06 PM

This is going to be done on my car asap because of this post! Good stuff man!
Dan:)
gongeuzler 03-20-2006 06:10 PM

I just throw it under the carpet
nate49509 03-20-2006 07:12 PM

Nice work, I like it. But you should make something to hold it down.
Menik 03-20-2006 07:16 PM

If you're talking about an extra factory STi wheel like the one shown here, you're talking about a lot of extra cash!
scby rex 03-20-2006 07:24 PM

I ripped everything out( liner, carpet, spare, jack) now I have lots of room and I now have points to secure my race wheels and jack with pull straps!
krambte79 03-20-2006 08:31 PM

drove it tonight and wheel doesnt move. i could get a longer bolt w/ wing nut to secure like the factory spare. i dont really use the car for much other than pleasure so im not lugging things in the trunk that might scratch it, but yes if anyone has pictures of how they secured it that would be cool, thanks for the feed and by the way i purchased my refurbished (repainted) wheel from a nasioc member for 375 shipped, the wheel looks brand new. the wheel/tire in the picture is one from on my car (brake dust) b/c i have not mounted the new tire on the purchased wheel yet.
pmartell12 03-20-2006 10:00 PM

woah, it's like looking into my trunk...... except mine has a 15 inch sub under it.

Doesn't matter. That wheel/tire is heavy and in a forward collision at 45mph that tire will fly out of there and bust through the rear seats. Saw video of lighter objects in the trunk, and rear seats of a car at 40mph impact and the damage was amazing.
krambte79 03-22-2006 02:00 AM

if anyone wants spares i have a friend who wants to get rid of 4 brand new in box bbs
wheels gold 05 sti, willing to part w/ them individually if he can find 4 buyers of coarse. excellent price too!!!
scoobdude 03-22-2006 10:00 AM

Hmmm. very nice. I like the idea of the spokes acting as a grill for the sub. Very creative.

I also like the idea posted about putting it upside down kinda makes a basket. Plus you could secure it with the factory tie down probably. Very creative.
Imprezive_04 03-22-2006 10:10 AM

What's the point, the one with the sub is ok, makes sense.

But why do you need a full size spare
scoobdude 03-22-2006 10:24 AM

Since some of us run larger tires it will keep the circumfrence the same. Bad side is, you need to use the 5th wheel in tire rotations.

Plus with me, i have to wait a week before a replacement tire come in for me. I would much rather have a spare like that.

if you just get the wheel, buy an asymmetric tire and you'll never have to worry about which side it goes on.
scoobdude 03-22-2006 10:38 AM
if you just get the wheel, buy an asymmetric tire and you'll never have to worry about which side it goes on.
But if you put it on one side, and then the other later, don't the ply's inside start coming apart and cause bad vibrations and eventually tire failure? So either way you will need to worry about that. Now lets see someone just carry and extra tire and a tire mounting machine :p
Roly 03-22-2006 10:51 AM

honestly,.. i treat my full size spare as that... a spare. i understand what your saying, but since i'm not too worried about running my spare for more than 100miles (unless i get a flat at the dragon and have to drive home to Miami on it) i wouldn't be too concerned about rotating it.
krambte79 03-23-2006 12:51 AM

^^^true dat

BTW.. that spare tire mod looks trick. kudos on the work!
DieselClown 03-23-2006 10:52 AM

that's cool. looks like those fake display things where half of the car is cut out. :)
dj_booduh 03-23-2006 11:35 AM

Now I have to top that??? DAMN YOU for beating me too it!!!

Have you ever used a donut?
crisco555 03-23-2006 11:15 PM
Have you ever used a donut?
Enough said !
crisco555 03-23-2006 11:18 PM

way sweet with the sub... but at the same time, do you have to pull the sub out to use the spare, or re-mount it? hopefully not. i normally stuff a full-size stock rim in under the carpet in my wagon, and it just barely fits without modding anything, stock hold down etc. i just take out the cubby holder thing that goes in between spare and carpet. does the sedan have less spare tire room under the carpet?
krambte79 03-24-2006 12:57 AM

yes, thats why is sticks up a couple of inches, at least one tread width
HarryD 03-24-2006 12:31 PM

That works well for holding a full sized spare which is always better than running a donut. The problem with running the donut on the WRXs that came factory w/ 16" wheels is that the 16" donut is about 2.5" shorter than the tires on the car and the rear LSD doesen't like it very much. When I had an '04 WRX (I now have an'05 LGT) I ran a '04 STi 17" donut which matched the car's tire diameter even though they were 16".
moogoob 03-24-2006 01:00 PM

You can always put on 4 donuts, then the original spare would be full size. :)
Have you ever used a donut?
Yeah for like 4 hours then I go get my tire fixed.

Seems like alot of cost for something some people may never even use.

It does make sense for poeple running 17's or 18's
