Gary Sheehan #99 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Long Beach SPEED GT In-car race video

All--we realized that unless you viewed page 28 of our "ESX makes it's SPEED GT Debut" thread, you'd not see the download link for the full in-car race video.
The video is kindly hosted by Steve from Zzyzx Motorsports
Video is up at:
http://zzyzxmotorsports.com/racing/esxwcgt/
From the "Debut" thread:
"Big props to G-Diddy.
Here's the full in-car reel from Long Beach--to make it even remotely chewable, it's cut at 320x240, 30fps, 363mb.
Perspectives on the footage:
The start--great start, gets hosed by the yellow 'Vette, avoids getting walled, repasses the 'Vette, lets Andy Pilgrim go by without any hassle.
L2, T1, Gary sees a friendly looking corner worker, and decides to make a new friend before completing the rest of the lap
L3--drops 1 second from his best qualifying time, and looks set to drop plenty more time.
L4 "Marshall, it feels like the master cylinder just took a dive". 'Nuff said.
L5-L29: Gary proceeds to not just limp around, but decides to attack as hard as he can while having to pump the brakes repeatedly into each corner. While not really easy to see, look for his left leg going a mile a minute in every major braking zone.
While this works most times, it doesn't always stop the car, and on occasion, he's forced to use an escape road. Even more impressive is how fast he recovers mentally from each unexpected 'off.' It usually takes a driver a little while to regain composure when faced with a sudden and unexpected lack of brake retardation--Gary turns the car around, gives himself a corner or two to refocus himself, and sets about pushing as hard as possible yet again.
Just crazy.
To make sure everybody is clear, Gary isn't paying for this drive, nor is he expected to--his talents are deserving of a free/paying drive in any top team. We're thankful to have him in our STI, and know that with most any other driver, he'd have both given up on L4, and parked the car right away.
Gary, being a pro's pro, and knowing how important the debut of the STI was to everybody, not only refused to give up, but pushed as hard as he could.
A special guy, working magic in a car that didn't want to slow down.
when he was near other cars in most of the turns, there wasn't much to pick between the STI and the other car.
If you still aren't convinced, keep in mind that during the race, Gary was hitting 139mph going into T1 before (praying) the car would stop. The day before, our friend Memo Gidley had a mechanical failure going into T1, and at an unabated rate of speed, went straight on at T1, flipped the car, and is currently in a back brace. While his DP car hits about 170 before braking into T1, crashing head-first at 140 or 170 into tires and concrete still hurts.
That Gary had the skill and belief in the STI to finish the race in these conditions deserves MAD respect."

downloading the (363MB) file now. Looking forward to it.
The car looks beautiful and I'll be watching every step of the way.
Good job Gary.

Damn. Get an error saying the server can't be reached. Probably just me.

Sounds like it would have been at least a top 15 finish if the MC hadn't given up.

That was a heck of a launch!
That Vette deserved a boot.
Awesome stuff. Gary is a heck of a driver and you really couldn't pick a better GT racer that is more familiar with Subie's.
Thank you very much for sharing the vids.

I'm getting a solid 870 KB/sec!!!!!!
Can't wait to see it, I said it in the other thread, but amazing results for the first time out in the car given the unimaginable circumstances. I love how the commentators said a few times, "yeah - they'll have to get that thing sorted out..."
 sorted out? How about "this is the first time out. ever. and it's a brand new car with nothing like it before. and it's down on power. to finish would be an amazing accomplishment. to finish >last place would be an incredible feat..."
Either way, good luck guys - keep it up!!!!!!!!!

Holy crappz0rs! That had to be the scarriest ride I have ever seen
Watching Gary pump the brake pedal frantically while the tire wall keeps getting bigger and bigger. Man that was crazy. Thanks for posting the vid.

We can't wait to show y'all what the footage when we've made the next step in development, speed, (and braking...)
Thank goodness for the robustness of the Stoptech calipers and discs--with a dying master cylinder, they were taxed FAR beyond the loads, temperatures, and expectations anyone could reasonably ask of them.

Good to see a Subaru in this series. A good start for a team that just debuted in SPEED GT.
I hope to see you guys at Road America in August. :)

mad props to everyone.
thoughts so far... 4:18 into the vid...notice a random vehicle pull out and stop where Gary had previously had to pull off. Did you guys get a lot of 'resistance' being there?

Did one of the crew members say something about the brakes being red before and black now at the end of the video? That's a gutsy drive by Gary. I would have parked it as soon as the MC crapped out.

True, basically. If Stoptech ever offers a 'blood blister' red caliper, we expect to get a percentage of the proceeds :p ...

Good exercise in Slow In, Fast Out ... sort of. What a frustrating race ... must be terrible to to have to keep moving over to let everyone by. Great job of keeping it on the road while watching your mirrors Gary!!!
Did you have radio contact with your crew?
What was your redline?
What downpipe are you running?
Looks like you were running the oem Steering Rack. What are you going to upgrade to?

If you had that extra 700 rpm to play with, would that have helped your trap speeds enough as to not need more boost?
If you get that boost increase provision..coupled with fully utilizing the rpm of the motor...hopefully that'll get you guys near the pointy end of the midpack :)

Anybody notice the flap on the back of the hood scoop? Is it just to relieve air pressure in the scoop. Are you running a front mount intercooler? If so why not remove the scoop entirely? If not front mount, why would you let air out not down over the intercooler?
Oh and that really was a cool launch...

I think it has to do with rules that they must retain a some portion or variation of the factory body. In this case the hood must retain its scoop.

Awesome video. How much hp/boost do you guys need to keep up with these guys in the straights... looks like at a minimum 50-75 awp...

Way to go Gary for trying hard yet choosing to keep the car safe! Not every driver that weekend "chose to not wreck" their car in turn 1 when they had a problem.
Marshall, it sounds like 5th gear is a bit tall. Does shifting to 5th drop the engine out of the power band? Are you locked into your gear ratios yet?
And thanks for sharing the video!

Ratios aren't an option for us to change, unfortunately.
Improving the robustness of the 'box is OK, and some teams have been permitted to use a dog-box with a 100lb weight penalty, but other than adding strength, adding weight isn't something we can afford to do. We're putting her on a diet to the hopeful tune of 100lbs.

I was with Mike @ Grouppe-s the Friday before the race. He was so stoked on Gary's STi and had flown down to LB two times that week to help work on the car and was going back that Friday afternoon to help out again. Needless to say he was worked!
Anyway, Great job Gary and good luck with this kick ass ride! I'll be watching.
[Next race for #99 will be at Infineon Raceway (Sonoma, CA), June 23-25, 2006.]

Minor (but worthy) correction: Mike DROVE both times, roundtrip, and hauling the car the first time, and all after working 20+ hour days on the car, if not 24+ hour days.
He then went straight back to work at Gruppe-S on customers cars, and came back for more. He also worked in supporting the Lock's enduro effort at Buttonwillow the night before the Long Beach race.
Sorry for the odd place to endorse Mike and Gruppe-S, but anytime I get the chance, I make sure to tell everyone where the best and most dedicated Subaru guy/shop in the Bay Area can be found.
Plus, he hates this kind of mushy stuff...
