How I made my Momo shift knob screw on to my shift lever

Well, I was tired of set screws coming loose with previously owned Momo knobs, and Paulie isn't selling his machined insert for Momo knobs for the time being. So after buying a used Momo knob from garie (thanks!), I decided to buy an extra stock OEM knob from only1agam (thanks dude!) and do some tweaking to it.
Stock knob

I began cutting it apart with a razor knife....that's real leather!

Then you have to cut off the rubber under shell......it has several spots that go through the white plastic "skeleton"

Finally you will get to the "skeleton"

I took a 12mm x1.25 bolt and threaded it into the knob so I could hold it better while I took a Dremel with a carbide bit and shaved the skeleton down to the bare minimum. Gotta be careful not to cut too deep.

I did this until it would just fit inside the Momo knob.

Here it is with the Momo cap on it next to the OEM knob. I kept shaving down the insert and fitting that cap to make sure it wouldn't go all the way down to the shift boot lip and still have enough for the shift boot to fit.

I had to cut about 3/4" off the end of the insert so it would fit into the knob and still leave enough room for the shift boot lip. Here you can see it beside the OEM knob to show how that space is the same.

The final step was to glue it into the Momo knob with some 2 part heavy duty epoxy and let it dry overnight with a Quick-Grip clamp holding it in place. It doesn't take much epoxy.... I used too much and couldn't push the insert all the way in so I had to scoop some epoxy out.
Now I can just screw the Momo on like the OEM and never have to mess with set screws again!

That's pretty damn clever but in my book it's a sin to cut a perfectly good shift knob open. :p

you made good use of the knob :).. nice creativity once again :alien:

Nope, that was the first thing I mentioned.
He told me he had made an improved insert and was negotiating with the machinist on making them. He couldn't give me any time frame and I just couldn't wait any longer.

It's the race air leather/aluminum. It's an OEM accessory. The dealer sells them for $84. If you're patient, you can get a good deal on a used one. YEs, it does thread.

Nope Paulie does not make or sell them anymore. Paulie is a great friend of mine and the last adapter V.2 is on his current car right now. Last Paulie adapter that was available. So yeah his cost effectiveness of making the adapters in limited quality isnt worth it for him. He would have to make like 100,000 to make any profit worth his time. Hope that helps.

Great job!
I really wish I could have help ya out but as Antny mentioned earlier in this thread I just couldn't find anyone to make them in limited quantities for my price point. If I went ahead with the limited quantity I wanted produced, I'd have to charge like $35 each which is way too much for an adapter. My goal was to be able to sell them for half of what they originally sold for.
It's sad too, because the new version adds height adjustability, and a separate boot holder as well, and it works with just about all of the aftermarket knobs, not just Momo.
One of these days I'll get it produced, I just have no idea when :)
Congrats though on your solution. Look like it'll work out just as well.

Dealers sell the Subaru/Momo ones but the price is too high (though the $84 quote above is one of the cheapest I've heard...). Except for some of the NASIOC dealers that sell their wares....
http://www.subaruwrxparts.com/gc8-interior.html for example. $70.
Though I have to say that's some dedication, right there. :D No sin to cut apart an OE knob, IMO. They're so bloomin' abundant.
Now, if someone hacked apart my '00 RS knob, which is STi with red stitch, I'd have to get a bit angry. Hehehe...

lol good job. i just slam dunk my knob on there and said f the boot fitting

....deeeeeewwwwwwwwwds.....I figured out that a piece of plain rubber VAC hose(NOT fuel line---large VAC hose) that is JUST big enough to fit inside the knob should screw right onto the M12x1.25 shifter threads---a bit of spit or astroglide;) to lube the threads....my MOMO F16 has been on like that---TIGHT....for months, now----I used some VAC hose that I found and it worked just great.
