It's Germany time....
I know...the short between-race break has everyone flummoxed, but:
1. MS (sorry, but after last week...he's made a deal with Satan)
2. JPM (the man is DUE, baby!)
3. Kimi (rage is a powerful motivator, even though the HP-challenged McLaren would seem to be at a disadvantage)
4. RB (they might actually get him off the grid this time)
5. Ralf
6. DC
Don't mean to add fuel to the Schumi-haters ire, but I watched the French GP again, and I still don't see how MS went in for the drive-through, and came out right on the heels of JPM and Kimi. Like David Hobbs, I was thinking that he would come out it 5th or 6th. Freaky.

 Don't be too controvercial!
I'll be different and vote for JPM to win, assuming Williams can get their tire issues taken care of. I think it'll be a pair of Schumachers in second and third, then Rubens and McLaren fighting for the remainder of the points positions.
I also predict that regardless of how the race goes, Kimi won't have much to say about it ;)

And Arrows to not make the race. Sucks that everyone thought Minardi was the most strapped for cash team and then Arrows is the one going through crisis.

Hmm... didn't realize how much more technical the track is now... maybe McLaren will do a little better this weekend. Also, new tires from Michelin, so maybe Williams will do well after all?
Can't wait to find out, regardless :)

That's true it's a new track for everyone I'll go with:
1. Kimi-(very good at learning new tracks and I want him to win anyway;))
2. MS-home grandprix curse
3. Montoya-can't get the win still
4. RB-gets off the starting line this time :)
5. Coulthard-outgunned my Kimi again.
6. Button-passes a very random Ralf for the last of the points.[B

the new track configuration means that the longest straight is only 12 seconds of full throtle... as opposed to (i think) two 15 second full throtle straights... there's a higher ratio of corners to straights now, i think that mac should go well.
here's my prediction.
1) kimi (pissed off because his AISS failed in the last few laps of france, there was no oil ;) )
2) woobins (the ferrari is still very fast... and now m$ doesn't have to win every race rb will get a few pitty wins, just not this weekend)
3) shovel-face (outraced by kimi all weekend, and all year...)
4) chilidog (drives the tires off the car (again) and can't keep up with the mclarens in the turns. he spins again, almost taking dc out again, but this time, dc lets him spin and passes once he's stopped spinning.)
5) jacques (other drivers are sill baffled by the color choice of his helmet in their mirrors and he passes them when they make mistakes)
6) ralf (still lack-luster... he barely manages to hold off the renaults.)
m$ will go out of the race with some kind of problem... i'm going to call driver error on this one... not mechanical error.
we shall see in a few days...

Hockenheim butchered
Yay! Let's rip it up and videogame-ize another track! My prediction? Cramped. Backmarkers with no where to go, no one will want to get on the dirty stuff.
I'm all for fresh tracks, but why at the expense of another like that? I liked Hockenheim for what it was... an engine test, who will blow up first? :) Oh well, chaulk up another one for "safety".

Who the hell allowed that new track format? I was gobsmacked when i saw that indy style wall bang next to the track after a fast right hander just before another right hander, its literally inches from the side of the track and has a very acute angle for cars coming up the track.
If anyone hits that they will die! Crazy!!!
And why is it there? Its there because it is the retaining wall for the drag strip that runs alongside the GP track.
As victor meldrew would say (famous comedy brit series moaning old git) "I dont believe it!"

Drivers Who Don't Like The New Hockenheim
Source:AtlasF1.com/news
Juan Pablo Montoya
"It's a shame we lost the old track, a big, big shame," said Montoya, who finished seventh in Friday's practice. "I flew over it and it's like when you fly over Silverstone, you see the Grand Prix circuit and then suddenly you see the national circuit. It's like that.
"In public perspective it is probably better because people can see more, but it was a classic circuit. It was quite interesting, even if it was straight-chicane...to get the car right to go over the kerbs was difficult.
"With the stadium section on low downforce it was like being on skids on snow. It was good fun. Now everybody is full downforce and it is like any other corner anywhere."
Montoya prepared for the challenge of the new circuit by driving around it on the Playstation computer game, but he does not believe that the game designers have got it quite right.
"I played it, but the corners on the game are not quite the same as those here, especially the one after the hairpin," he said. "That right-hander is really tight in the game."
The Colombian driver still believes that the circuits he raced on in during his time in CART racing in the United States were much better than the 17 tracks the Grand Prix circus visits during a season. But he backed the new developments in countries like China, Shanghai and Bahrain, where new tracks are being created in a bid to get onto the calendar by 2004.
"If you look at the circuits they want to do in all those places, I think they are going to be really good."

Jacques Villeneuve
"The old layout was very different but it's just like any other track now. There's one section that really concerns me - the short straight before the entrance to the stadium section where the wall comes back towards the track.
"Generally it's a typical modern circuit and not as interesting to drive," added the British American Racing driver.

Pedro de la Rosa
"I don't like it," he said. "The track is very slippery and to be honest, it has lost its character to the extent that you could be racing anywhere. The individualism has been compromised too much."

Jarno Trulli
"It's a shame that I managed to find one of the few gravel traps still left here," he said. "In terms of the new layout, it's not very exciting, just a question of braking, turning and accelerating."
DC did his drive-through from 3rd and came back out in 3rd with time to spare. As I recall he lost around 15sec to whoever was in 4th. Michael went into the pits with about a 10sec lead, and came back out 4 or 5sec back. There's nothing magic about it. The pit lane at the French GP had a very short pit entrance, and drivers were back up to speed pretty quickly after the actual pit lane. The exit wasn't tight at all, so drivers could get basically be back at full tilt before they actually got onto the track. Normally the Speed Channel guys are on top of everything, but I was amazed that they were amazed that Michael lost so little ground. It didn't seem that surprising to me.
As for the German GP, I missed the practice sessions, and slept through qualifying this morning, so I have no idea what's going on. :)

Thanks, Pat. I watched it again, and see that I was confused by the crappy world feed. The last time check shows Schumi with about a nine-second lead. He does the drive-through, and when the camera picks him up again, he's right on Kimi's butt. My quick math resulted in about a ten-second drive through, but if you extrapolate the lap time difference then factor in the two laps he was running free before he came in...it all makes sense.
Schumi's on pole, but the track is a joke. It almost makes me yearn for the infield section at Indy...(almost).

MS won again! No problems, he's a champ!
On the other hand, Ferrari pisses me off sometimes because Rubens is always getting shafted. It's one thing or another and something always goes wrong for him.
He was well on his way to catching Montoya today and his pit sucked leaving him no chance.
And Ralf pitting just a few laps before the finish for "engine check" yeah right, back to team strategies they wanted Montoya to win. It should have been a German 1,2.
To continue my bi+ching, I am the only one who can't stand Montoya?! Everyone always gives MS crap because he's so good, but new boy Montoya comes along who was popular because he raced americanized indy cars, and everyone loves him. Talk about errogant, "what happened with Kimi cost me the race" has he ever admitted that things were just his fault. I would like to see him racing when he's not in one of the fastest cars on the circuit.
I think MS is awesome, and I'm glad he won. I just wish Ralf could have been second, and Rubens third.

Ralf pited near the end to top up the Pneumatics system resevoir because it was leaking during the race. It was a call by BMW, not Williams. The pneumatics is what controls the engine valves, if you lose presure, your engine goes bang. Now why would BMW, a german company, fabricate something to deny a german driver of 2nd place?
RB's problem was with the Intertechnique fuel rig sticking. The fuel rig is a sealed unit suplied to all the teams, Ferrari cant touch that, they have no control over its quality. It has stuck many times this season for other teams than Ferrari.
JPM being polular has nothing to do with him being in Indy car, 99% of the people who watch F1 have never seen an Indycar race. The world does not revolve around the USA and its racing you know! He is popular because he is a very tallented driver who has bigger balls than most.
JPM being stuck behind Kimi had a major effect on his race, thats why when he did pass him, in a brilliant ballsy move, he pulled away from him at 1+ second a lap. He wasnt moaning at Kimi, he was stating the fact that with Kimi getting a good start it cost him in the race, which is obvious to anyone with half a brain cell.
But hey, have a rant, dont let facts get in the way. :p:D:monkey:

Total superiority
Usual boring procession, but regarding the commentator's statement that over Schumacher's career, he has taken points in all but 5 of the races that he has finished - that is points in 126 F1 races!
I have a strong feeling that he will finish his career with at least 75 wins in F1. 3 or 4 more this year and another 9+ next year is quite possible.
Jaguar...1 step forward, 3 steps backward. No, wait, I mean Renault... 1 step...

First of all, I want to welcome John Felstead back to commenting on the F1 races. I know you lost some interest after Austria, but I really do welcome your insight back to these discussions.
the racing between Raikkonen and JPM was really cool. These guys are the future stars of F1.
Possibly the most amazing thing I saw all weekend was JPM's first hot lap during qualifying, when went off over a curb and into the grass and kept his foot completely buried and not only straightened the car, but had the 5th fastest time up until that time which had included Ralf, RB, MS, DC, Kimi and most others.
Rubens had tough luck with the fuel rig deal, but he didn't show me that much this week in that he couldn't pass Ralfie.
In confess to being a Schumacher fan, but frankly with him in this particular car, it's pretty ridiculous. The car is so much better than any ot the others, if someone doesn't hit him (or vice versa), or if he doesn't make a huge mistake (try to remember the last one), or if his car doesn't break (again, try to remember the last time that happened), he might run the table.

Awesome race and racing. Who said you can't pass on the new track? That scrap between Kimi and JPM was great to watch, though I suspect a bit of ire (at having been trapped behind him for lo these many laps) reared its head when JPM essentially moved Kimi onto the gravel before finally executing the pass.
How about Michael's pace control? You know that he was waiting for Ralf and Rubens to come up, so that he could block Ralf and let Rubens through. Once Ferrari gave him the green light to put the hammer down, it was bye, bye, Ralfie.
For all of the Ferrari conspiracy theorists, Rubens got the T car, which is usually the province of Michael. So much for the team deliberately messing up Rubens' chances. The man just has bad luck....nothing to do about that except hire a Santeria guy or something. I couldn't tell if they couldn't get the fuel door open, or if the rig stuck. Either way, too bad for Rubens, though he didn't have the stick to get past Ralf anyhow.
I don't know if JPM could have done anything with Schumacher today, but being stuck behind Kimi certainly didn't help his cause. And Ralf continues his Barrichelloesque role as the Williams lightning rod.
Nice call on the misguided rant, John Felstead. I loved the race, but the three weeks between today and Hungary will seem like forever!

Well I was gone all weekend living the rustic lifestyle so I missed everything. I guess the German took the pole and the race. Glad I missed it.
I'm pissed Montoya couldn't make it 6 poles in a row.

Track???
What in the name of..........did they do to this track, out three good overtaking oportunities after long straights it is down to one corner....or a succession of few as demonstrated by JPM :D
How many different races JPM pulled off something like this...racing with different drivers, going side by side throught succession of few corners...like someone mention before he has the biggest balls out of any current F1 driver.
Oh yeah, BTW, I finished second on the podium

Am I the only one who thinks David Hobbs was drunk during the race? His commentary was awful! He flubbed numbers, had trouble picking out the drivers, and overall was off his game.
BTW I find it surprising only one person mentioned the little maneuver Juan Taco pulled at the end of his battle with Kimi. I thought he basically ran Kimi into the dirt, a bit of a dicky move. Much more dicky-like that Shueys pass on Kimi last race (at least there, if Schuey did keep Kimi off in the dirt, it wasn't so obvious). It was an exciting sequence of turns, and Kimi definitely was holding Taco up, but I could have done without the run off the track. Either way, good to see the BMW boys in 2-3 although Ralf deserved 2nd IMO. And poor Rubens getting shafted yet again; he might not have had a lock on the podium but the extra 4 or 5 seconds would have been nice.

Haha you called him taco...
Ralfie got dealt the old maid at the end and Barrichello nearly didnt start. The bad luck club.
Of course with half the grid not finishing, it appears almost everyone has bad luck, except Schumi, who consistently has good luck. Or he's just ridiculously good.
As for the REAL competition, I hope to move up to the podium soon.

new track = bad
there's not as much character in the new configuration as the old... it's not as much of as 'endurance of the engines' race as before. i liked seeing the cars with low downforce for speed on the straights get all assy in the stadium section. the new track doesn't have that. i liked seeing the cars whip through the thick forests at 300+kph, screaming all the way at full throtle for what seemed like hours.
oh well.... :(
as for the race, other than the kimi/jpm racing, it seemed rather like a parade to me.
:monkey: to new track configs! :monkey:

(takes bow) I'd like to thank all of the little people...
I think that David Hobbs broadcasts with altered sensibilities with some regularity. Either that or he's just sleep deprived. He's funny as hell sometimes, but he can certainly be erratic.
After McLaren protested Schumacher's pass of Kimi last week, I'm surprised that Ron Dennis wasn't at the officials booth again. I know that his protest was based on the fact that Schumi passed Kimi under yellow, and a victory was in question, but after watching that pass again, JPM definitely was a bit more aggro than he should have been, IMHO. But that's racing...
Rubens needs more stick. He's either on or off, which is the compelling argument for Schumi being the no. 1 driver...consistency. If Michael and Rubens had the same car (they did), Rubens should have been able to get the heck past Ralf, if you see what the superiority of the Ferrari to the Williams was. "Hey, Mike...turn it up." "Right, Ross...off we go." And a three-second lead almost instantly ballooned. If Rubens wants no. 2, he's going to have to (easier said than done) go faster. Sure, he has terrible luck, so much so that I just KNEW that something was going to happen to Rubens. Bummer, really, but I also think that you make your own luck sometimes.
Alex Yoong would be slow in the space shuttle! Now seeing Webber in the Ferrari would be interesting...

Of Spilt Oil, Stewards, and French Protests

I think it is clear he overtook under a yellow but I don't know, Dennis said when asked if he will protest the result. I'll have to look at the rule book. I think it is relevant that he [Raikkonen] went off the road, it is a question of when there was a green flag. I think that is the regulations.
He did overtake under a yellow when Kimi went wide. It is really up to the stewards to decide.
So the FIA stewards took up on themselves to investigate the incident because of Ron's comments, but not because anyone had filed a protest. The statement issued by the stewards included this:
FIA Stewards @ French GP
Having heard the explainations of the drivers and their representatives, having viewed video evidence and examined relevant sector times, the stewards decide that no further action is deemed necessary.
In response, McLaren said they would not file an appeal, but they would ask FIA for clarification of the rules. I just wanted to clear up a myth that Ron Dennis had filed a protest...

Michael Shows Why He is 3 Time World Champion Again

Michael said afterwards that he quickly blistered his 1st set of tires, and Ralf was able to run the same pace, and even faster than Michael. During Ralf's 1st stint he ripped out a 1:16.8 and then a 1:16.6, whereas Michael's best 1st stint laps were 1:17.0's, so Michael and Ross were worried. Ross Brawn said afterwards that due to the tires going away in the high heat, the timing of the pit stops was critical.
Whereas on the 2nd stint Rubens pace was ~.4 sec/lap off of the Schumachers before he began to run near their pace. At the end of 2nd stint however is when Michael turned up the wick and left them both behind.
It is incredible to see the lap charts, as one can see why Michael is the highest paid driver in the paddock...
Super Michael's laps before his 2nd pit stop:
lap 40 1:16.706
lap 41 1:17.386
lap 42 1:16.802
lap 43 1:16.649
lap 44 1:16.462 (fast lap of race)
lap 45 1:16.495
lap 46 1:16.701
lap 47 in pits
On all 7 of these laps by Michael, no-one was lapping faster than he was.
Meanwhile, Rubens did only one lap under 1:17, (1:16.845) on the last lap of his 2nd stint (lap 45). Little brother Ralf responded like this:
Ralf before his 2nd pit stop:
lap 42 1:17.455
lap 43 1:16.972
lap 44 1:16.967
lap 45 1:16.593
lap 46 1:17.257
lap 47 1:16.513 (Ralf's fastest lap)
lap 48 (pit in)
Net effect was that on lap 39 Ralf was 5.5 secs back, but on lap 46 he was 9.6 secs back! I think that illustrates part of the reason why Michael is a 5 time world champion...

Nice post OTG, very interesting stuff. It's a pity Ralf was baulked badly on his run into the pits, what would be useful is to see how long the lap took on the respective pit stop runs, as that will show how badly ralf lost out.
