We got him!

From Autosport Online:

Subaru has confirmed today (Monday) that four-time World Rally champion Tommi Makinen will join the team in 2002, along with co-driver Risto Mannisenmaki. The news means that Richard Burns is almost certainly heading to Peugeot next season. Makinen, 37, has signed a two-year contact with the Prodrive-run squad, ending his long relationship with Japanese rivals Mitsubishi.

"I felt it was time for a change, and I'm delighted that Subaru has given me this fantastic opportunity," said Makinen. "The team has a clear concept of how to win the WRC, and I'm proud that I'm going to be to be part of that. I have a lot of respect for Subaru and I am really looking forward to working with everyone there."

Subaru is definately solidifying there role in autosports. Not just that, when the EVO comes to the US, kids will not be able to identify Makinen with Mitsu any more, since the flying finn was so popular in PS2. Laters Mitsu!
Cigar2 10-15-2001 11:02 AM

And just think about the Special Edition WRX. ;)
Thug 10-15-2001 11:08 AM

Im glad to see this. Tommi has been my favorite driver and the Evo my favorite car since I got into rallying. But with the Evo being on a new platform it's going to take atleast a year to get things worked out to the level of the Evo VI, and then another year to get beyond that. So Id say right now the Subaru is my favorite WRC car and most definitely the most solid one. Look for Tommi to return to the podium soon kids. I almost wish Burns was staying with Subaru for another year. Id love to see Tommi make a fool of him by driving circles around him in the same car.
Burns = jerk.
(Sorry SubieGal, I know you love your Burnsy. :) I still think he's a good driver. I just think he needs an attitude re-adjustment.)
scoobagenie 10-15-2001 11:12 AM

whoah, as cool as that is, it's so strange. for the short number of years that i've been aware of subaru motorsports, tommi has always been the symbolic arch-rival! next year should be fun to watch :)
mykrrrr 10-15-2001 11:43 AM

WOW!!!

I go away for a weekend and the WRC world is flipped upside down... :D

If Burnsy stays, it'll definitely be a superstar team!!! :D

:D

Now I just wonder what Burns will do... would Subaru have two "#1" drivers on the team?

i hope burns doesn't leave but he probably will, not too excited about the whole Tommi thing.
Dirt Man 10-15-2001 12:25 PM

Sweet, Nice job Prodrive!!!!, I'm sorry to see Burns go, but it's time for another championship and Tommi is the right man for the job!:D
Robin2 10-15-2001 12:27 PM

That's great!

Just amazing...... He's one driver I've always like..... Great driver and very classy!

Subaru (SWRT) did well with his signing.......

Note: this news was before the offical signing of Tommi.

Like the other post says, I'm sure Burnsy is headed to Peugot. Peugot is getting heavily back into racing and I think they want a young driver to lead their team and Burns will be a perfect fit. That being said:

GO TOMMI!

I can't wait till next year. The car will have a full year of development under it's belt and an awesome driver to pilot it!!
Mel 22B 10-15-2001 12:35 PM

Although I think Tommi is one of the best drivers ever I still believe that Burns is better now. I will miss Burns in a Subie but hey I got over it when Colin went for the big money. I still think they made the wrong call by not signing me. :)

So, the team will be Makinen, McRae and Solberg? I guess they still have to have a guy on the team that crashes stuff, so Solberg won't be going anywhere.

His Safari Rally comment: "And I didn't hit ANYthing!"

Should be a hell of a team.

Humm Carlos to Mitsu ?

I`m sure he`s narked off playing second fiddle to McRae. Not his style at all - plus he has yet to renew his contract.

Could be an interesting year next year ;-)
Verist 10-15-2001 01:59 PM

I'm almost scared. Everyone knows he is a great driver and if he does not win then.. it is the car's fault!
nmyeti 10-15-2001 02:09 PM

GO SUBARU!

-Nathan
jetfire67 10-15-2001 02:29 PM

even w/ burns on Peugot, he'll still play 2nd fiddle to the superior slack-jawed Gruenholm(sp?).
johnfelstead 10-15-2001 02:30 PM

*cough*

Told you guys Makinen at Citroen didnt make sense at all. :D:lol:

Awesome news.

Oh, by the way, Burns HAS signed for Peugeot. It's not official yet but he HAS. Trust me!!!!!!! :D

Not a chance, pug make tin boxes on wheels. You can't buy an AWD 206, never mind one with a turbo. *booo hissssss*

Jamie may like Burns (too much ;) ) but she aint stupid. :D:lol:
WRSport 10-15-2001 02:47 PM

Good point :)

Hey, there are a couple of Group B Peugeot 205T16s in the US right now, they pop up on Ben's Rally Page every now and then... I think there's even a 405T16 Pikes Peak version floating around somewhere. Subie Gal could go OLD SCHOOL!
TOMMY B 10-15-2001 03:11 PM

Every one knows that a Rally Goddess"Subi Gal", Can not Be True to just one(1) Man................;)

First Burns, Now Tommi Who's Next ???????? :)

RALLY ON ///////////////////////
Idjiit 10-15-2001 03:12 PM

WHOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!

I've been checking the sites as often as possible waiting for this news, I'm so stoked... Finally Subaru will return to glory...
Fido 10-15-2001 03:23 PM

Woot! Woot! Woot! :D :D :D
TriniTuner 10-16-2001 06:50 AM

Must admit that I dont like Tommi as a person, but well he's a hell of a driver and that is what counts for SWRT...

Things are looking good for Subaru with Makinen and Solberg to drive...
Marquis 10-16-2001 07:06 AM

That is just too good to be true. Makkinen is, IMHO, the best driver in WRC. And to be piloting a Subaru now that it's had some development time will be incredible. I truly cannot wait for the 2002 WRC season.
