Repainting headlights new color

I bought a used 02 wrx and the previous owner painted the headlights black. I too want to paint them, but I want to paint them white to match my exterior. How can I go about doing this? Do I need to sand away what he did?

If you just scuff it up with some scotchbrite, you should be good.
I've seen this only once before, and it looked really nice. I know there's pics on here somewhere, I can't remember the screen name of the guy that did it.

on an 02 it will look horrible.

I was very sceptical myself when he said he wanted to do it white, but I have to admit it looks great. Leaving the chrome ring was key. I've seen it done where everything is white and it looks a little off. Got to hand it to him for doing something out of the ordinary that turned out sweet.

I've seen bugeye headlights paint matched for every color except for maroon. It looks terrible on all except black.

I think colored head lights looks good for the most part. But I've only seen pics on the net - it could be different looking at them in person. Post pics if you end up doing it.

Here is silver on my bugeye... I think Black looked better before. now i dont care since i will be putting EDM's in.

Black definitly looks better on a psm. Silver is too much like the chrome. On the bugeye you have to tape off the reflective area for the signal or it looks like **** IMO.

700 is nothing IMO for the best bugeye exterior mod ever. Those would be my first purchase, except I know that kid from a local Euro forum, where I suggested for him to get EDM/JDM projectors and his response was that he's not dropping the $700 on the lights, not me, the bottom quote is from the thread where he said so himself.

I did this a long time ago to my 2.5i I got lots of negative feedback for it though. I still liked it, it was more unique than everyone painting them dark colors/black.

The car looks a lot different now, it's been lowered and has just a couple little exterior mods.
(I have white wheels coming on soon once the snow clears, I can't wait to see it then.)

I'm going to bump this again because I'm really curious to see pictures of a bugeye with the headlights painted to match. Preferably WRB. I have seen the white bugeye but that is it. Thanks in advance.

I want to do this on my 2003 Forester...did a photo shop & it looks the goods...
Just bake open headlights, clean it up, mask off, paint & re-bake to put them back together?

Thanks guys for the pictures... This is really tempting... I just got my eyelids and I'm in the process of painting them. I guess after I put those on we'll see how I like it.
