replacing front windshield, should I get new moulding?
My WRX is a year old, does it need the $62 worth of new moulding when I get new windshield?
| Zahnster | 05-17-2002 02:28 PM |
Yes. It's not a question of if. Because of the way the molding works on these cars, if the windshield is replaced you need a new molding too.

Subaru recommends their gasket at $60 and it's a bit much for just a gasket. When my glass cracked, the shop offered me a generic gasket, and so far so good with mine. It was only $11 for that one. They also said I could reuse my old one if it was taken off carefully.... But I just opted for a new one.
| Sam2 | 05-17-2002 06:07 PM |
Yes you need a new gasket and yes a reasonable generic will probably work as well.

Wow i have to replace my windshield too! JUst got a nice beautiful crack from the passenger side to the driver side! ****ing a! Damn crappy subaru glass!

Cracked as well. Spreading about 1/2 inch per day.
Anyone have a cost on windshield replacement?

Had to replace mine a week ago. Runs about $262 because of the new molding.

Funny thing. I just had my rear winshield replaced and the first thing the guy asked is if i had the molding for the windshield. I said no, but he had a spare by chance. I asked him if he could use to old one and he said the windshield would not seal right. Do you have issurance? If so, who cares about the cost of the moulding, your issurance should pick up the tab. :D

Cracked Wndshield
Mine just cracked 1 week ago from rocks kicked up off the interstate. I wonder if based on cost I should have my insurance company replace it or pay for it myself?

If your deductible is only like 50 to 250 bucks, then you should definetely go through your issurance. In fact, there are MANY autoglass shops here that will pay up to $250 of your deductible. So pretty much, you get the windshield for "free". We give the issurance companies enough money! It's about time we take some back! :D

You may not need a new moulding. I just had a new windshield installed in my 14 month old WRX and the original moulding came off and went back on fine. When the mouldings get old they get brittle and can crack and warp when removed. In a one year old car the moldings are going to be in very good shape. A good windshield installer will know how to handle them without damaging them. I've owned 5 Subarus and the only time the mouldings were replaced during a windshield install is when they got old and brittle. Don't throw away $60 for nothing!

my deductible is $500.
Well, just got it done. New molding and all. So total was $300. Now the crack that was as old as my car is gone :)
My car had the crack but it didn't grow for a whole year. Now this week it started to crack again. I wonder why. The windshield has seen hotter/colder days. Only ran up to the 90s this week.

I can get $0 deductible for $160 more a year but I'm just cheap. Plus they probably won't change my deductible unless I get the crack fixed in the first place.

I know here is Portland, OR it's pretty common only because there are so many damn gravel trucks driving on the highways without covers! My car fell victim to it's first 12 chip marks, plus two windshield chips from one truck! I was driving 65, and I saw the gravel truck to my right, ironically enough, I upped my speed so I could avoid getting any damage. I was along side of him and all of a sudden the bastard slammed on the breaks and guess where most of the rocks and debri hit!! Oh well, as least I'm not paranoid about driving on dirt roads and getting any chips in my paint

Got my installed for 200 today. They used the generic molding. IMO it doesnt look right. I dont like it as much as the stock molding. Oh and a FYI make sure you tell them its the Wagon or Segan windshield (whichever you have). They ordered my windshield and got the wagon one they put it on to find out it didnt fit. They had to run out to their supplier and pick up the sedan window, no biggie except it took them about an hour longer. Does anyone know if the windshield has to come back out to replace that seal with the OEM one?

I was just quoted, by a dealer, $837!!!

OEM Glass = EXPENSIVE
I got a quote on the wagon windshield from a dealer and the glass alone was ~ $650. I imagine people who payed much less were not getting OEM glass.

Yeah. Mine is PPG. I wouldnt buy glass from the dealer. Its all the same, if you want as close to OEM as possible get the Sterlite (SP?) they are the company that makes the OEM glass.
| bemani | 05-20-2002 01:39 PM |
better off not getting the oem glass again anyway since they're so easily cracked.
| dedfish | 05-20-2002 03:04 PM |
well given the choice of ~$700 vs ~250....hmmm....which would I choose? No brainer if you ask me.

The facts
OEM windshield is made by Nippon glass for a MY02 TS. You should have a new moulding when the glass is replaced, if the old one comes off ok then you (or the glass co) can return it to the dealer. I do it all the time here. The job turns out 10 times better with a new one. Nothing worse than pulling out a w/s and not having a moulding to install the new one. The moulding goes on the glass first then everything goes into the car at once.
You also get what you pay for when it comes to glass. If you pay very little for the glass then you will get a low quality piece of glass. Why do you think someone is 200 dollars cheaper, not because he is trying to help you out. He is using inferior glass or sealers. I worked for a glass co that used cheap glass, and that is what you got. It wasn't bent right or there were gaps in the corners, distortions in the glass, or just brittle glass that broke really easy. Safelite(SGC) is one of the worst pieces of glass you can get. Diamond/Triumph is importing junk from overseas. It is so bad that if I pay 100 for a single w/s, they are paying 20. Guess who is getting shafted, you the consumer.
Windshields are an important part of a uni-body car. It ties the front and back halves together and keeps the roof from crushing in on you in the event of a roll over. You MUST use the proper sealers and installation techniques. The type of sealer must meet federal standards for crush resistance and roll over protection. If you use the wrong procedures or even touch the edge of the glass, you contaminate the area and risk seperation in the event of an accident. There are federal standards that we must follow, I do, but some don't. The sealer I use costs me $38 a tube, and dries in 2 hours. Safe enough for the passenger side airbag to deploy off of in the event of an accident and meet federal standards.

Well in my opinion glass is glass. And look at how often you will be replacing it in the life of the car. Maybe 3 or 4 or 5 + times. On all of my cars I average a windshield every 25,000 miles. So if you are replacing it that often why spend the extra money. If you get crap glass the first time dont get that glass again. I sure as hell aint spendin $800 at the dealership for glass!
| Stealthbmbr | 05-21-2002 08:35 AM |
I would not spend the money at the dealership either. They don't replace the glass, they call me and mark up my price to you. I don't know of any dealerships that do there own glass replacements. They all sublet it out and mark it up 20%, I have even seen some Porsche(and the like) mark them up 50 to 60% when I was done the job. I charge them the same as I would charge you.
Sorry if I confused anyone. My point was that a good, reputable glass shop is the best option. Call around and see what the going rate is for the glass you need replaced. But, just because someone is the cheapest, doesn't mean you are getting the best deal. Somewhere they are cutting corners. It could be low quality glass, inferior sealers, or just inexperienced help. When someone comes to my shop, I want their car to look beter when it leaves than when it came in. I don't want to see a customer again unless they are spending more money. I get mad at myself or my installers if something comes back for a problem. If you aren't going to do it right, then don't bother doing it at all.
And the only thing most insurance companies are concerned with is making a profit, not making sure your car is fixed correctly. Ther are exceptions but they are getting hard to find. Think of car insurance as a HMO and you will understand, got to get referrals and everything must be pre-approved. And they have a problem if you want factory glass put back in. Some won't even pay for it. The industry has really changed over the last 10 years. They don't even want to be bothered with glass claims anymore. Just call the 800 number on the back of the insurance card and report it to them. Pretty soon there will be no need for agents at all.

These are only a few of the OEM manufacterers off the top of my head. They all make glass for different vehicle lines and are OEM quality. You could have a HBI w/s and PPG doors in the car from the factory. Mine has a Nippon w/s and Tempalex doors in it. But I wouldn't be afraid to use any one of the brands I listed above on any of my vehicles. One thing about were I work now is we will not install junk glass on any customers vehicles, period. Molding
Just to add my 2c here.
I just got my windshield replaced yesterday after a disagreement with a pebble. Got my WRX In Feb so was rather PO'ed it's busted.
Anyway, went to Standard and got new windshield. The guy there said that I *MAY* need the molding ($88 CDN) but he'd know when he takes the windshield out. ANyway, they call me around noon and say that the old molding is ok but a little kinked. SO I say to put in the new one but keep the old one so I can see it.
Anyway, I go get the car and see the old one - I totally see what the problem is now. The windshield is glued into the molding and pulling it out causes the rubber-type substance to kind of kink and wrinkle. Would look terrible. Fine on a beater, not on a new car. Funny thing is I'd called Apple Auto first and they had said that I didn't need the molding..blah blah..even after I mentioned the info here. I'm glad I went to Standard now - guy there was FANTASTIC.
BTW: price for the glass was $410 CDN + tax installed. It's PPG glass so I'm hoping it's a little stronger than the orig

for future reference the subaru P/N for that front windsheild molding is 65058FE000. it costed $62.08 at my local dealer and would take a few days to get.
also for future reference, the "list" price of the front windshield is $862 (i assume OEM) but you can find places that will sell a PPG for $263.50.
