Screw the WORLD CUP,.....let's hear it for the 24hrs of LeMans........

Of course if would be nice to go when Porsche wins overall again, but this year will be special. I cant wait and since for the first time in HISTORY, the race will start at 5pm Saturday due to the WORLD CUP, I guess it's a historic event none the less.
I will be there guest of a major suspension manufacture and should be able to get good paddock pics and enjoy driving on the road the day before the race. With a 8.1 mile lap and over 300,000 other crazy fans expected the preparation for this event goes beyond that of a weekend at Daytona and or Infineon. I have to plan for 80 degree days and possible 50 degree nights with rain and keeping the Rebel dry. This is the first major race for the wife so who knows how long she will last. Me,..I have packed the Northface, fleeces, shorts, Ipod, GPS, temporary FIA Super license(lol) and 2 way radios.
It wont be all racing though, the wife has 2 days planned before the race in Paris an 2 days after the race in Paris. Prob taking the TGV to LaSarthe and catching a cab to our bed and breakfat thats within gearshift hearing distance from the Mulsanne.
Am I lucky?...NOPE. I waited all my life to go and it was won on a bet with the wife last year on a flight back from Dubai where she agreed to fund the trip. I was smart enough to get a signature on the back of a napkin, which was the amnesia breaker a couple of months ago,...(yes she forgot). :D
Oh, and there are 2 karting tracks between Paris and LeMans, so if we drive, I could stop and get some laps in.
The household rule is no matter where we go, I find a karting track and work up a sweat. Here is one we will try to find.

Here is how it came about.
The leg of our trip from Dubai to JFK was 14 hrs. On the way there we had exit row seating in front of 2 flight attendants who didnt sit there. So I am 6.3 and the wife is 6.0. We could extend our feet and rest them on the flight attendants seats. It doesnt get any better than that, this side of first class.
On the way home............ :furious:  :( ..it could not have been any worse. I was in the center 7 rows, 3 in to my left and 3 in from the right. I was stuck behind a kids seat who had it all the way back and there were new borns in front. So with a space about the size of 2 cubic ft, I existed for 14 hrs. To add to that, my body was still adjusting to all the curry in the food, so I was holding back MADDD GAS !! It was during this time that I brought up LeMans 2006. So since we had gone over to my wifes best friends wedding( her best friend grew up there), the wife felt I had endured alot and just agreed to the LeMans trip. Not expecting me to come straight home and start making reservations. LOL.
So in racing scenario's I saw first and second fighting for position and let them fight to til they went off as I snuck by and took the win !! YAY !!
Next up,..TAS ( Tokyo Auto Salon)

Actually Porsche wont have the Spyder there, but I was making reference to "IF" I could choose, I would like to go when they could fight for the overall.
Maybe 3 Audi's and the Pescarola would drop out on rare mechanicals leaving it to Porsche. YAYYYYYYY !!

I'm going to email you in bit Myles. I won't be leaving Zurich until Saturday noon or thereabouts, so I'm going to bag on the start of the race and head down early Sunday (train) from Paris and catch the last 10 hours or so.
Oh, be jealous of me as well, everyone. I'm doing two major sporting events in the space of a week and a half, World Cup last friday (opening game) and LeMans this weekend.

If I can't be there, then I'll do what I did for the 12 hrs of Sebring: SPEED ON-BOARD PASS w/ AMLS Radio Network streaming over the web w/ SPEED on TV, both laptops w/ on-board cameras (corvette and aston martin) with a 19" flat panel running the airial shot throughout the entire 12 hrs. Oh yeah, did I mention that was the first Sebring i've missed in 10 years??

UPDATE from Paris !!

With a view of the Eifel Tower from our room and the smell of soft bread filling my AKTINS diet mind, this trip ranks up there with.............NO OTHER !!
Day 1: walked alot today and took many shots of the crazy cars in France. Renault Sport has a dedicated store on the Champs Elysses( spelling bad), that is like a club of sorts. Bar, food, and many new Renaults on display. The one represenative says up until about 3 months ago they had 4 F1 cars in the store. Amazing stuff.
Yes I am taking 100 pics a day no joke.
French women?...yes the wife and I talked about this. French women walk funny and wear TONS of incredible perfume. Even the women in their late 60's are still trying to "have it going on"...with no stockings and tans and heels. Crazy stuff man. The one time when Liz has pointed out women to ME !! Crazy I tell you.
Subaru count? ZERO !! . Only saw 2 Porsches today and many CLS AMG's and yes it cost 1500 Euro's to rent a 997 4s and take to LeMans for the weekend. That aint happenen'. LOL. (DUH).
ALot of Ducatti's and Smart cars. The guys on skooters are certified crazy as they fly thru traffic with a 20kph cushion and weave and bob thru traffic. Again, crazy comes to mind.
One thing is for certain, the French view motorsports and take it seriously. I had on a Racecomp team jersey with a host of brands, like Moton, Brembo, Alpine Stars, BBS, ADVAN, Recaro, etc embroidered on the sleeves and people would not stop asking me about it and started talking about Lemans and racing in general. Instant language barrier walls broken if you love racing.
Ok, enough rambling. Tomorrow is day 2 of the 2nd honeymoon stuff and then Friday morning we head to LeMans.
I will spare you the Day 2 details. Next time I update will be prob after LeMans. I have no way of sending the pics back for Kelly to post, but no worries, you guys know I am not post shy !!
Au revoir !!
Wow, sounds like youre having fun. Dont have too much fun, you need to come back and get those RCE springs done ! :D heh

The weather for Saturday and Sunday looks freaking perfect (which is when I'll be there, I always have pretty good luck with weather when traveling, or at least I have for the three weeks I've been in Europe).

Update:

Day 4: After a unplanned romantic excursion ( we got lost BIGTIME !! Stayed on the A6 for 45 minutes. As a result we took some serious back roads. I mean the kind that are 130 clicks down to 20kph hair pins with almost no warning !!!) we arrived in LeMans at 1500, just in time for the pitwalk.
I cant speak for other people, but standing in the pits today was a moving experience. Being at LeMans is moving. When you see Jackie Ikx walk by and Derek Bell and Tom Kristensen, and realize they have 15 victories between them , its amazing !!
Then I think about all the young drivers who are racing there for the first time. Doing the super hard task of their first night practice( which is the SUPERBALLZ courage thing thats not talked about alot, but known within the drivers circles) for the first time. All of a sudden you start thinking,...." all the money in the world cant buy that......"
Bill Auberlen once told a racing magazine" night time practice in the rain took all he had.....". That was in the BMW LMP car. So imagine a 911 GT3 as the prototypes almost suck your car off the track with the closing speeds they have.
So alot of things went thru my head today. This place is awesome to say the least.
LeMans is a beautiful place. Priceless experience.

anyone have links to torrents of any lemans video yet?!?! not having speed sucks!
| CirrusWRX | 06-17-2006 10:56 AM |
Uh, dude, it hasn't started yet! hahahah
I'm going to upload torrents from Speed throughout the day, but I'm not quite sure how to start torrents - can somebody give me a primer or link on how to do it safely?
And I'm recording from MCE 2005 so I can hopefully strip commercials easily, any suggestions on what format to save it in? (What is most preferred?)
Edit - it's on - w00t! When did they stop the "standing start" at LeMans (I realized it's probably hugely dangerous...)

I took the advice of Marc who is a friend or a friend who's house we stayed, not to stay til the end of the race as its a mob scene. Instead we had lunch at Le Tertre Rouge which is the little place on the outside of where the Mulsanne straight starts.
After that we drove 20 klicks to a outdoor karting track that had 16hp karts, not to mention 60mph straights and when it rained; and yes it did, they keep on racing !!!!!
Anyone who knows me will tell you a trip isnt complete until I get in a kart. Its also fun to beat some locals on their own turf too !! I can say one thing though, you have not driven until you are 55mph sideways in the rain in a sprint kart headed for a dorp off !! I saved it and I think one more hair grew on my chest.
Today prior to the karting track we did get to see the far corners of the track and WOW !! These Bri-ish and French dudes are committed !! They are in the deep, deep reaches of the woods camped out with nothing more than 5 kegs of Stella and toilet paper and couldnt be happier !!
Of course pics coming soon.
On a side note; NOTHING compares to laying in bed at 0300 and hearing the Porsche's shift going down the Mulsanne straight !!! NOTHING. Even though we were 2 miles away, at niht time in Villa Du Mans, you can hear a pin drop! So its 60 degrees F and no AC's on and no young people with 18inch subs in the trunks of cars and no high way noise. Just clean breezy air and the wonderful sounds of LeMans in the distant BUT CLEAR background!! Priceless.
In the neighborhhood we stayed; MANY drivers have small duplexes and everyone is into racing. The best environment in my opinion.
I dont want to leave.
Myles

Miles you lucky bastard. Looked like a good race from what I could tell on the live timing. Pescarolo put up a damn fine fight and suprisingly didn't break down. Aston Martin and Corvette always have THE BEST battles. They were close the entire 24 hours. Some day I'll get to go to Le Mans, I'll just have to settle for Goodwood this year :D

Finally, a different P car won GT2 at LeMans. Been a fan of Panoz since before their LMP1 victory at Portland years ago, and happy to see them suceed at LeMans.

Shut up. :p
I'll just sit here in the humid midwest and console myself with memories of camping with my friends on the shore of the Red Sea, watching the sun go down, trying to decide if we want to do a sunset dive or wait until midnight to go get wet.
I was going to watch the conclusion of the race on Sunday morning but guess which channel was the only one on Comcast that was belly up?
