Stock BOV doesn't look stock anymore!! part 1

brcewane 07-15-2006 03:30 PM

Stock BOV doesn't look stock anymore!!
So I was trying to track down a boost leak in my car today and put in another BOV to see if it was the stock BOV leaking on me.. In the process I think I figured out where the leak was but figured I would take the opportunity to clean up the stock BOV a bit..

So here it is.. still have some final polishing to do on the base. I took the dremel grinding bit and wirebrush attachment to the base and then painted the top with the Duplicolor Anodized Blue.

Turned out pretty good.

looks pretty sweet

take pics of it mounted!
03twrx 07-15-2006 03:43 PM

Holy crap! That Duplicolor looks awsome! I wander, how hard would it be to to paint FMIC piping with that paint?
brcewane 07-15-2006 03:47 PM
take pics of it mounted!
I'll post some pics tomorrow.. waiting for the paint bake in the sun and dry 24 hours before I put it back on the car. The duplicolor paint is high temp as well that will work for valve covers or brake calipers.

To get the anodized look you either have to put it on bare metal, or do what I did and use the anodized base coat first.. let it dry 30 minutes and then spray on the color
WRX-ERROR 07-15-2006 04:40 PM

Yeah I did the same thing as you with crinkle red paint.. Makes for a nicer look. That color is hot..
brcewane 07-15-2006 06:12 PM

Got too excited on how it looked, and the whole afternoon baking in the sun cured the paint nicely :D

So here are the installed pics:

Might just have to do that :)

Looks great!
2slofouru 07-15-2006 06:41 PM

I used the same stuff on my 280zx valvecover. It looked awesome, but it never got completely cured. Months after you could still put permanent fingernail marks in it. Yours looks really good installed.

lol i know! i was broke and couldnt afford to buy any, so i had to use what i had lmao

i dont like the intake, it is to much red. if my K&N typhoon would ever get here, its still red but i think it will look better.
but i agree its a little to much in the one corner, and i dont think enough in the oposite

Beautiful bay man... very nice work

ghibli99 07-16-2006 12:16 AM

The painted BOV looks perfect in your engine bay! Zero/Sports oil filler cap, intake pipe, and an ARC pulley cover would look really nice in there, too. ;)

shemoves 07-16-2006 12:57 AM

go black on all the yellow stuff. Otherwise it'll be too much. I did mine and it cleaned it all up real well. Not flashy, clean.
03twrx 07-16-2006 05:09 AM

Paint yer intercooler pipes!
Jpapania 07-16-2006 09:52 AM

What a simple but great looking mod. The stock BOV is kind of an eye sore on a TMIC, but this is great way to make it pop.
AMOS GT 07-16-2006 11:53 AM

look amzind dude
Mr. Sadface 07-16-2006 12:10 PM

I wish more people did this mod, instead of adding a JDM tyte yo atmospheric bov. Looks VERY nice, and dresses it up great!
InfamousDX 07-16-2006 12:39 PM

Man if you got your IC pipes powdercoated that color.. it would be amazing.
CatfaceType-R 07-16-2006 02:34 PM

OOHH no, now you're gonna get pulled over for modifications and no longer have a warranty

look at my modded bpv

polished, ftw
InfamousDX 07-16-2006 03:02 PM

shoulda polished the whole thing. maybe the pic doesn't do that one justice.
CatfaceType-R 07-16-2006 03:05 PM

yah, i only polished the front top portion...i was lazy and was doing it by hand Lol
InfamousDX 07-16-2006 04:47 PM

yea... it would look better if you just spray canned it with some red or gunmetal or something.
TygerStile 07-16-2006 05:23 PM

good job on the bov...
brcewane 07-17-2006 07:10 AM

I've got a spare intake manifold on the way that I am going to polish..

Also I'm going with the Samco intake hose to replace the ribbed hose from the MAF on the intake right now..

I'll likely paint the caps a light dull grey to fade into the background. I am also getting the LNR carbon fiber dress up kit (alternator cover, solenoid cover, oil cap) and their CF fuse box cover.

Got some other stuff planned, but that is the main stuff.
killthelights145 07-17-2006 11:34 AM

your the one with the ebay intercooler correct?
let me know if you are or not cause i just ordered one and i was wondering on how you can put a bov on it. did it come with supplied hoses to hook up the stocker (which i dont have anymore)
brcewane 07-17-2006 11:55 AM

Yes it is the SSAutochrome intercooler... No it doesn't come with the hose to hook up the stocker, it comes with a flange that would fit a FMIC BOV like the RFL TurboXS one..

All you need to do to hook up a stock BOV is go to your local autozone, get a silicone hose that fits the flange on the FMIC and then pick up a TurboXS adaptor plate. The adaptor plate is usually used to fit a FMIC style BOV onto your TMIC.. But if you flip it upside down it works perfect as a flange for your stock BOV on the FMIC

Here is the flange and link http://www.turbometrics.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=114_22_86&products_id=3321&osCsid=f51614027fccecd497bfb642ba0046e4

looks good, good job.
ghostfoot7 07-18-2006 07:11 PM

Looks great! Did you have to treat anything on the bov to make the paint adhere better? Roughen it up at all?

Nice... very nice...
kevinh211 07-18-2006 07:22 PM

that bov looks awesome. i like it

yeah, first i hit it up with the wire brush wheel on the dremel, then finished it off with 400 grit sandpaper.

I just finished painting up my solenoid cover bracket with the same paint.. haven't installed it yet.. Looks pretty cool though
NewShockerGuy 11-17-2007 02:59 AM

Can you link or show some pics of the paint/primer that you used?

I'd like to do this in the next couple weeks.

Thanks,

Not to hijack, but has anyone ever painted the STi logo on the TMIC a different color?

This was something I was thinking about...
sheepdog 11-17-2007 12:31 PM

I've seen someone paint STi on a wrx intercooler on here one time, and it turned out OK. I don't see why covering the original "STI" with a different color would be any different.
NewShockerGuy 11-30-2007 10:10 PM

I just painted mine red right now.. more of a crinkle red actually.

It's in my other room drying :-)

w00t w00t.

Here's what my DIY paintjob on my stock TMIC looked like:

I actually painted the STi logo on the intercooler screen, not the TMIC itself. I was VERY pleased with the way it came out, but then I went and replaced it with a V7 TMIC anyway.

To the OP: Nice job on the BOV! Im might try this myself.
