Stop bending my windows you knob!!! part 1

drevilrocker 07-28-2005 10:10 PM

Stop bending my windows you knob!!!
Anyone every worry about closing the 04 WRX doors via the windows? When people are leaving my WRX, they often close the doors by the windows instead of the door frame. Will this cause problems later on (e.g., leaks, broken window motor, fingerprints)???
itjustWoRX 07-28-2005 10:20 PM

you know everytime i leave my windows even the slightest bit down, and i close them, it makes this strange rattle-like noise and i swear one of these days the glass is just gonna shatter.

sorry i cant be of more help to you, but i'm curious myself so i'll BUMP BUMP BUMP.

Put up a little sign on the window (facing the inside): "Closing the door using the windows may lead to broken fingers"

That should take care of the problem.
drevilrocker 07-28-2005 10:38 PM

Fingerprints and Death
So far the worst thing that has happened is fingerprints on my windows that I see when I wash the car.

I would hook up some sorta electrical charge that zaps the door slammer when they do it via the window, but glass is not the best conductor.

I'm just more worried about the interior noise that it will cause in the future.

hahahahaha. thats funny as hell. thanks for the laugh.

i have a problem with people slamming the doors. they are soo light, it doesnt need all that force to close them.
Subie Gal 07-29-2005 12:02 AM

huge peeve of mine

use the friggin door handle. that's what it's for :furious:

is it going to hurt your car? doubt it.

but if it upsets you... 'train' your friends to do the right thing

use the fargin door fargin handle!!!

They usually use the door handle to open the door (when exiting vehicle) and then slam it from the window... Very irritating..

something to try: open the window (good ol' power windows) as they begin to open the door, they usually don't notice and they'll look like an idiot when they try to shut the door from a window that isn't there anymore :)
szeny 07-29-2005 12:12 AM

i usually use the window or the top if the window support on other cars... but thats cuz im 6'2 and i have to bend to reach the handle.. would rather use the glass :disco:
Chi_San 07-29-2005 12:19 AM

I had a 1995 Legacy, and it was closed via the windows a billion times, never had a problem. The rattling noise is normal, don't worry, they won't brake. Subaru's windows and power windows are stronger than, say, a Jetta's which are prone to breaking (usually the glass falls down into the door and won't come back up without a new window motor).
MattDell 07-29-2005 02:19 AM

I shut my car using the glass, but I push near the bottom and not up top.

I'm sure Subaru has done enough engineering so that force from a human hand isn't gonna hurt anything. ;)

Yeah, but the FINGERPRINTS!!! Clean windows is a huge pet peeve of mine.
sonicsuby 07-29-2005 05:58 AM

I close the door by .... the door. As does my fiance. She closed via the windows on my '03 WRX a couple of times and I just kindly asked her to close by the door instead. She hasn't done it since.

Anybody else gets yelled at :p
Hank3 07-29-2005 08:56 AM

I use the little black strip between the window and the door to close my door. That way I don't get fingerprints on our fragile paint and window :)
kaisersouse 07-29-2005 09:45 AM

i like it best when my back windows are down (they dont go down all the way by design) and my friends act like the door weighs 8000lbs and the smash it shut and my window goes "knock knock knock" because of the force.

At this point im telling them the next time my door gets slammed their heads will be in it at the time.
USA 79S 07-29-2005 10:20 AM

I hate this issue as well. What's worse is when they slam your door by your window. That's a double whammy. Grounds for capital punishment.

Simple answer...you have frameless windows. Its not a problem at all. Your window just isn't secured like other cars you've had. It rattles a bit. No big deal...
thorongil 07-29-2005 11:28 AM

I would rather have people shut my doors using the windows than the door/door hande. First, if they have something in their hands or are wearing rings, I worry they'll scratch the paint/clearcoat. I visited my parents a while back and for some reason my mom always had stuff in her hands when exiting my car -- I cringed each time she shut the door. Second, people are often gentler when shutting the doors with the glass than with the door/door handle. I cringe each time my siblings slam shut my doors because they do not realize they're not heavy GM doors (and I've repeatedly reminded them to be gentle). So, I would gladly put up with a couple of extra fingerprints on the glass if it meant no scratches and no door slamming.
BillyC 07-29-2005 11:35 AM

been driving Soobs for years, never had a window break from closing it.. and they all have always had that good ole' classic rattle when you have the window down a bit and close the door.

Its normal, but how you close it is up to you.
HiVoltg12 07-29-2005 11:46 AM

I tell my friends that there is glass and a $300 (not really) set of speakers and crossovers in the door. it kinda got the point across not to slam the door

+1

All of the "regulars" that ride in my car understand how to properly shut the door... except my sister :furious:

Thats exactly what i do!
scooby888 07-29-2005 12:56 PM

I use my shoulder and kinda "tap" the window when I close my door. Bad habit from when I had a Civic Coupe.
High PSi STi 07-29-2005 03:06 PM

You could always weld the doors shut and have them climb in/out like the Dukes of Hazard.

Good to know I'm not the only anal one. My black strip has become somewhat discolored due to exclusively using it to shut my door...but oh well. When I went to lunch, I chuckled to myself as I thought back to this thread and how us Subie owners are talking about this stuff
04AspenWhiteWRX 07-29-2005 04:40 PM

Im sure after time the window will become loose and begin to leak. I had a 91 camaro and the windows were loose from people closing the doors by the windows. So i pretty much learned from that car to always close the doors by the handles.
Carbon888 07-30-2005 06:15 AM

I'am having the same problem with couple of my friends. They close the freaking door by the window. I told them to stop doing it, hopefully they'll change. It's a common bad habit. Subaru windows are stronge though, my friend's chin got caught on the edge while going into the car, it rattled a bit, but nth seroius happened. NO problem

Yep, same problem on my 02. I didn't like it so I stopped... I don't mind putting up with a few fingerprints on the paint.

I use my elbow on the window. Doesn't leave fingerprints... Plus, you should see how dirty my car is right now. You can't see finger prints through the dust caked everywhere. ;)

I think they'll notice that the window's down after you start driving...

Just because some people aren't anal about their cars doesn't mean that they're complete idiots.

but yeah, it's annoying.
kcook 07-30-2005 10:16 PM

funny.. ive never closed my door by the window.. i always grab my door, its a reflex almost
joeyb7 07-31-2005 12:49 AM

I ask everyone to close mine by the black strip below the window, and before the door paint... my girfriend almost killed me when I asked her to close it that way, and not the window.

i agree with one of the other members in this thread... ever look at your door handles?? tons of scratches... close it by the windows.
SubieRX 07-31-2005 06:16 AM

Haha, my cars just as dirty. Haven't had time to give it a good wash in a loooong time.
TrickNipple 07-31-2005 06:21 AM

I dont really notice where people close my doors from but everyone has trouble opening the door. Either they stand there wating for it to be unlocked or they grab the handle as I am unlocking. I have been noticing more fingerprints on the driver window lately but I think part of it is because I just got my windows tinted.
Jonnyfilmboy 07-31-2005 11:35 AM
I use the little black strip between the window and the door to close my door. That way I don't get fingerprints on our fragile paint and window :)
That's what I do too.

Now, my only problem is getting people to UNLOCK the doors before they exit. They yank repeatedly on the handle to get out like the car is slowly filling with water or something.

And when entering, people are always pulling on the door handle at the exact moment that they unlock (because they heard the drivers door unlock and they think they are good to go). Then the locks get stuck. So you have to re-lock and then again unlock-unlock to get the pass door open. I have started opening the door for people. They think I am so polite.
Haha, my cars just as dirty. Haven't had time to give it a good wash in a loooong time.
My car is so dirty, I actually leave a dust trail when on the freeway. ;)

I'm going to wash it soon. If it rains, the dust will turn into mud...
Mowambi 08-01-2005 10:19 AM

You know the other day as i was reading this im thinking who shuts their door with their window... Then im driving down the street and i hear a rattle, and i keep hearing it. Its my rear driver side window. Its abnormally loose... Never really paying attention i guess my passengers are doing it... Ohh well time to get a roll bar and weld my rear doors shut...
John2.5RS 08-06-2005 04:54 PM

Ha
At least I'm not the only person this iritates. I tell my friends not to and they look at me like i'm anal freak!
Handsdown 08-06-2005 05:01 PM

yeah i hate this too!

i asked my girlfriend to use the door, and she's been better about it. i'mma have to start yelling at everyone else!
limestoner 08-06-2005 05:32 PM

well since i have to hold the door handle up to lock the doors, nobody shuts my doors using the windows.
Absubtle 08-06-2005 09:22 PM

My wife has 03 Forester XS and her friends do that constantly.. LOL She has the glass cleaning wipes box in her car, so she can see. This humidity and heat, here in PA, is a b!t$h to keep things clean, since sweaty hands and heads, seem to like Subaru windows.
Not used to this crap :(

PS-I had the same complaint w/ my 90 and 94 Integra.

Ditto - 1996 Legacy here and the windows have been through hell, least of which is people closing the door by the glass - up or down. They still work fine. And yes the rattling is scary sounding, but has not caused any problems. Well, that is except for that weird loose drive mechanism where the bolt loosens on the driver's side - but that is known design problem courtesy of Fuji Heavy Ind.

For my part, I either use the door handle (to lock) or the black weatherstrip at the top of the door to push the door closed. Don't like anymore fingerprints than the wife and kids put on my glass already. :p
Chi_San 08-10-2005 08:26 PM

I noticed that I've started using the little black strip since reading this thread. :p Probably because that's the only part of my car that isn't covered in an inch of dust and mud. :P

Closing the doors repeatedly with the windows between all the way down and all the way up will eventually rattle the windows off track. Happened to my car and was scratching a rut into the edge of the glass everytime I rolled them up or down. Had them realigned by the dealer, but the scratch is still there. Good thing it's in the very corner and not noticable.
McPhreak 08-11-2005 03:50 PM

I close my door using the window because the window doesn't give me a static shock during the winter.
