Subaru anti-static shock pads installed part 1

Subaru anti-static shock pads installed
Very nifty little item- keeps you from getting zapped by static shocks when you get out of the car. Best part is, the installation took about 10 minutes per door :). You can read more about it and see the installation here:

OneOBS 04-23-2005 11:14 AM

Do you have to touch it for it to work?
North Ursalia 04-23-2005 11:20 AM

Yep, you touch it as you get out of the car.

Email'd you Brian :)
crxgator 04-24-2005 09:49 AM

sick...i was freaking out because everytime i got out of my impreza i would get shocked...its getting annoying fast...

never happened to me in my other cars though...
Amazake 04-24-2005 10:32 AM

25 per door?
only1agam 04-24-2005 11:16 AM

 funny but cool mod
distorto 04-24-2005 11:21 AM

how can we get these?
Moods 04-24-2005 11:26 AM

I think it'd definitely be worth it... i make my hand into a fist and touch my door with the heel area so the shock doesn't hurt quite as bad as if i had just touched it with my fingers...
CGM_WRX 04-24-2005 02:16 PM

Pretty cool idea but I'll use the age old free technique and use the 25 bux for gas.

Unless I forget one last time and then I might pick one up. :p
samwY 04-24-2005 02:29 PM

its so ugly though...
Andrman 04-24-2005 03:05 PM

Group buy!!

Can someone post how to obtain these?
McPhreak 04-24-2005 06:11 PM

I find that touching and holding onto the metal part of the door as I'm getting out of the car prevents me from being shocked when I need to close the door.

The other thing I sometimes do is push the window rather than the door to close the door.
tkarabian 04-25-2005 01:30 AM

I always just close my door with my forearm instead of my hands. The shock is minimal, if at all.
MB38 04-25-2005 01:59 AM

I'd be in on a group buy.
kheovnien 04-25-2005 03:03 AM

ha. u guys act as if it's a death sentence door or something. i get shocked from time to time. it does look kinda ugly but very functional. cool and unique find
brianbot5000 04-25-2005 03:36 AM

Man - almost tempting. The fact that they make a mod for that has to back up the fact that this is a Suby thing. I've never had this type of problem in another car. It's not the end of the world, just an annoyance really. And at least for me, it's not only on dry/cold days (I live in Seattle) - every time I get out, I'm hesitant to touch the door.
ha. u guys act as if it's a death sentence door or something. i get shocked from time to time. it does look kinda ugly but very functional. cool and unique find
Sometimes I think it is! I've had my door shock me from a good quarter inch away...as my finger is aproaching the door, the shock jumped out at me. It was crazy!
seasons 04-25-2005 05:05 AM

nice mod but pretty worthless. just grab metal part of the door before you put your foot on the ground when getting out. no shock

free, easy mod
Geek Guy 04-25-2005 06:01 AM

I've had this thing since 2001 ;)

True...

But as anal as I am, I don't like to touch any metal places on my ride to avoid dirt on my fingers or getting the car dirty or oily with my hands
Trunk_Monkey 04-25-2005 10:54 AM

Or you could just get used to hanging onto the roof as you pull yourself out.

I have had it happen in a number of other cars but nothing even close to as bad as in my WRX. Like you I've been zapped from about a quarter inch away and I hate looking like a moron getting out of my car shaking my arm and swearing. :p
North Ursalia 04-25-2005 11:19 AM
25 per door?
Yep :)
how can we get these?
I'm thinking about buying a dozen or two and selling them through my place of work, Subaruwrxparts.com. All depends what I can get for pricing with shipping from Japan. Japanparts.com can get them, but they quoted me over $50 each after shipping.
Man - almost tempting. The fact that they make a mod for that has to back up the fact that this is a Suby thing.
Nah, my girlfriend's Civic DX shocks the crap out of you. Incidentally, the other two of the set of four I got was for her car, and they fit great. She now has a genuine Subaru part in her Civic :).

Is that were they say to put them, reason why buddy's car he has them on the door handles so you touch them easily.
Undepelo 04-25-2005 02:59 PM

Could you mesure the resistance across the pad and your door ground point? This gave me an idea. What about putting a metal pad behind the inside door handle and ground it to the door. That way you will always discharge before exiting the car.. :D
North Ursalia 04-25-2005 03:07 PM

You can put them pretty much anywhere you want- that's just where I usually push the door open from :).

what about touching the metal screw behind the inside door handle bracket?
Trunk_Monkey 04-25-2005 07:57 PM

It would be more natural do grab the handle for people in the passenger seat.
02R6 04-25-2005 11:33 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but can you put the line behind the door card instead of hanging in front of it?

(And here I thought I was the only one getting shocked. Glad it's not just me.)
North Ursalia 04-25-2005 11:48 PM

That's one of the in-process photos from the install- the cord runs behind the door card ;). Check out the mods page I linked to up there for more info.
what about touching the metal screw behind the inside door handle bracket?
Well the screw has a little cap on it right? What I was wondering is if you could discharge while you are still in the car and then come out. Can somone with a shocker car try this? Open the window while the door is still shut, touch the metal body (roof is easy) then let go of the metal. Open the door and exit the car without touching the metal body, now touch and see if you get zapped.
North Ursalia 04-26-2005 10:59 AM

You have to touch metal while seated and until you step on the ground. If you touch metal, slide across the seat to get out, and then touch metal again, you'll get shocked :).

WRX03 04-26-2005 11:02 AM

You mainly create the charge dragging your butt across the seat getting out. But no all the time. I get zapped touching the window(tinted). I found if I touch the window AS I'm getting out, no zap. But half the time I forget. I tested this by just touching something conductive in the car before I get out, most of the time no zap. But as soon as I get out of the car, I'll get zapped. Another cure is aftermarket seat covers, not the wool ones. :p
QuickSilverSTi 04-26-2005 01:53 PM

Do they come with a dress?
North Ursalia 04-26-2005 02:02 PM

No, they sent all the dresses to you ;).
Nah, my girlfriend's Civic DX shocks the crap out of you.
...I hear that. My wife's EX does the same thing (it's worse than my WRX).
DroppedClutch 04-26-2005 06:02 PM

Some tires are less conductive than others and dont easily transfer the static buildup to the ground.

Anyway Theres an old school solution for this A metal strap (cable, chain, etc) connected to base metal on the chassis and allowed to drag on the ground will minimize or totally eliminate the problem. Ive heard a leather strap works too <shrug>. A light cable or chain could be used to minimize noise and bounce due to the cables inertia, but I imagine it would have to be replaced more often. Or you can hang a big fat chain just for the sparks. :)

I kinda like the shock gets the adrenal flowing a little. :)

If you have a cable near the transmission, how are you going to see its ghetto-ness? Do you do summersaults to your car? ;) Not necessarily elegant but almost undetectable, except to the guy at jiffy lube. To me elegant is not having something stuck to the doors either. Im just offering a glimpse at a solution for those who want to eliminate the problem rather than just do a work-around. Either way is an inelegant hack really.

<-- Going to keep the static.
dbrier 04-29-2005 12:07 PM

I put mine on about 2 years ago and love them. I'll take some pictures this weekend, I have a very clean install. I took the door apart and skipped all the metal stuff and put them by the window switches. They look like they belong there.

I'm the one WRX03 mentioned. :D
