Sylvania Silverstars
I wanted some decent bulbs for my wrx and was just going to purchase a set of cool blues (not the best out there but definitely inexpensive). I went to Sylvanias site and they now have a bulb called silverstars. The cool blues are rated at 3500k and the silver stars are rated at 4000k! Definitely not bad, and I think this is at stock wattage too. Anyway, I called around to see who had them and no one has heard of them. Does anyone carry them?

Whoa, those are amazing! 4000K:eek: Wonder if they will melt the harness?? I tried calling them but they close at 6 PM EST:( I will try them tomorrow to see where the closet place is to buy them. Wonder how much they are? And if they make a H3? I hate when my fog lights aren't the same color:p Keep us posted if you find them on the net somewhere and if you find out how much they cost, I haven't had any luck yet :(

Thats what I thought, 4000k! I'll definitely let everyone know if I find anything out.

It shouldn't melt the harness, as long as you stick with standard wattage.

I work at AutoZone and we sell them. We just got them in last week. They are $25 each but much brighter than a standard halogen and much whiter too. We tried the 9007's on a guy's truck. I wanted to get them for my car but either they don't make or we're not gonna carry the H4's. However, we have the 9004's, 9005's, 9006's and 9007's. If you want a new look I say these are it since there is really no bluish tint like a hyper white. Also I think the visibility will be much improved over a hyper white. I had some in my car and had to lose them because I couldn't see $#%& during rain and fog. Hope this helps.

Thanks I_H8_1.8, that was of some help... I'm glad to hear some proof that they DO actually sell them here in America. I'll try calling around more tm, including autozone.

I just installed the Silverstars, I will post results after dark.

I drove around with the Silverstars, they''re better than stock, but not by much.
| MGS'sWRX | 12-19-2001 10:47 PM |
It sounds like you dont think they are worth the costs?? Is this true?? What did you pay?? Were they any more white than stock? thanks
| SK00Impreza | 12-20-2001 01:03 AM |
Yeah, definitely give us some more input. I expected these bulbs to be more than just a little better than stock.

I looked at PIAA super whites @ 3800K. Lumens I do not have. Are these supposed to be brighter than Piaa? Just wondering.
| GRWRX | 12-20-2001 08:03 AM |
I guess they are a little whiter. Not much. I paid $24 a piece at AutoZone. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy them until the ones I have now burn out.

When we put them in that guy's truck at work, the main difference I noticed was that the were less "yellow" than a standard halogen. The main thing that made them stand out was when the brights were switched on. I do think they are kind of on the expensive side, considering you can get Cool Blue bulbs for about $30/ pair or XtraVisions for about $35/pair. The thing I liked about them is that they seem to be brighter than a standard bulb but without the yellowish tone to them. I just find that to be ugly, if you ask me, although clear glass bulbs seem to give the most light from the driver's seat. Just my $.02.

I just got the Cool Blues this past week. And they look much better than stock. They made the headlights much whiter and clearer. If you're within 2 feet of the lights, you can see a slight purple tint because of the bulb. The output range is wider and longer, and lighting is better than stock, but not much.
In the end, $20 is a good price for a temporary change in headlights. (Until the HIDs :D)

Anyone know if the CoolBlue bulbs are made in an H7 version? If so, where would I nab a pair?
| Vigorous | 12-20-2001 02:28 PM |
I got the 9007's. Best price I could find were $18.97 in two-pack at Wal-Mart. Autozone has them too, but for a couple bucks more.
I was hoping for Philips Blue Vision but they didnt have them in 9007.

Geek Guy, are you looking for H7's or 9007's? The Cool Blue's are available in H7, but that is a real small bulb typically used in motorcycles. If you mean the 9007, the Cool Blue bulbs are not available as far as I know. However, Pilot makes some Hyper White 9007 Bulbs that AutoZone carries that have about the same glass coloring as the Cool Blues. I think they are about $18 each or so.
| Vigorous | 12-20-2001 04:19 PM |
Cool Blues ARE available in 9007, I just said that.
| SK00Impreza | 12-20-2001 09:01 PM |
GRWRX, or anyone, have you tried/seen the cool blues before? What is better?
| au112 | 12-20-2001 09:11 PM |
Cool blue is very little blue tinted blue, so the light is a little whiter than the stock, still has tiny rice/yellow colour. If you like real blue bulb and light, you won't be like it, because cool blue is not for "HID look". My friend has a pair, but he doesn't like it. Because he wants real white like PIAA superwhite, which has a little purple tinting.
From the picture in the sylvania site, I think the silverstar would be stronger.

I haven't seen the Cool Blues, sorry. I'm starting to like the Silver Stars better now. Not very scientific, sorry again.

Well, I have the morettes, which have a H7 bulb in them for the projectors... At least, I'm 95% sure that's what they are, cause I seem to remember that when I removed them last.
Then again, I am left brained.

Do this.....leave one stock halogen bulb and replace one with a Cool Blue or Silverstar, or buy one Cool Blue and one Silverstar and compare all back to back. This is the best way to decide which is best for you.. I have cool blues and I have tried many crappy hyper white and "HID" bulbs and ALL of them suck, you cant see jack sh|t with them. High beams are even more useless the light just scatters everywhere. The Cool Blues are like someone lifted a blind fold! I mean its not real HID but I think its the best u can get without getting real HID. Sylvania is a reputable company they have been making light bulbs for longer than most people have been alive. I think they know what they are doing. As far as the Silverstars, i have no experience but they look similar to the Cool Blues...except for that silver tip.. You really dont want blue bulbs in your headlights. its a serious safety risk. If you do anything before you buy bulbs, read these articles http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/info/bulbs/blue/ and http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/info/bulbs/superwhites/ They will open your eyes for real. I put my money on Cool Blues.

OK I'm just now catching back up on this post, but after work today I went straight to AutoZone and actually found a set. $54.00 for both, tax included. I'm letting my bulbs cool down and I will go out and change one and compare the two. I really hope I didn't waste this money :( And to think, I've got a brand new set of 9007 HID's right here beside me, but I'm out buying $50 regular headlights instead:p
| bdowell | 12-21-2001 08:30 PM |
What a disapointment!
OK, definately not worth $50, $20 MAYBE, but $50? Save your money guys and gals. I put one in and compared inside my garage, I've never been so disapointed:mad: I haven't drove with them yet, I'll probably take a quick stroll on some back roads with just the one in and see how it really compares, but they don't look much different at all. I doubt 4000K too:rolleyes:

any update on these. Do they still suck how about the highs are they at least brighter???
| BJamerican | 12-26-2001 10:59 PM |
I've been using the Sylvania Cool Blue H4 lights for about a year now. I feel they are a considerable improvement over the stock bulbs. They project rather far, and produce a very even pattern without too much scattering.
However, I must say that on some roads (roads with black or very dark surfaces), the "blue" tint does take away from the visibility. Overall though, I am happy with the bulbs, considering what I paid for them

I have installed an H.I.D. conversion on my WRX. And I also read the articles in the links above. Let me tell you. I've thought about getting a true H.I.D. setup for a while and I had two big concerns about it.
1. Price has been too prohibitive
2. Beam pattern
I did a ton of research on the subject. Including countless web searches, testamonial reviews, and it was the one "in person" demonstration I saw that was the straw that brike the camel's back. Then when the group buy came along....well it was all over. I was shelling out $335 bucks for a set. There is NO, NONE, distortion of the beam pattern. I have had them on for 3 weeks and not one driver has flashed me telling me they are annoying. The light output is amazing. The phosphors in road markings and signs really glow with the full spectrum light. And the only drawback is you loose your high beam. But I solved that problem by using 130w PIAA pro 80XT driving lamps in place of my fogs. Aimed in a high beam pattern. Noow those are bright and the ONE time I left them on with a car coming(big mistake) he/she flashed their lights profusely and pulled over. I'm guessing cause they couldn't see :p Anyway, I take offense to the article links just posted above(not to who posted them of course) because they are obviously hocking sylvania/osram bulbs. And putting down what they don't sell. They are all the same. When trust me I have tried them all looking for lighting performance, NOT just the "look" There is no substitute for HID!
