Ver.4 Bumper swap
Hi all!
I'm planning on ditching my CDN spec (US MY98) bumper for a V4, and I'm going to need some advice:
1) There are people who have done this before - is there anything I should be aware of before I start out, or is it pretty straight forward?
2) I'm planning on putting in Hella500 fogs instead of stockers (MUCH cheaper, and better illumination).
a) Has anyone done this on a V4?
b) Any special backing plate needed, or will the stock plate fit?
c) Will these fogs fit under STi-style fog light covers (the square-ish ones)?
3) Anyone know where I can get a lip that will fit the V4 for a reasonable amount of $$$?
Any amount of help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Thanks,
Kevin
(PS, I have searched on this and have not been terribly successful. :()

1.) you may have to either cut, or to make it easier, get a new inner beam. i converted my '95 L bumper to ver. 4 and i had to cut.
2.) a/b) i started with piaa's but they shook too much and stuck out a bit. i'm sure with the proper bracket's they would have worked but i ended up going with stock fogs. IIRC there is directions on how to install piaas/hellas in the mods section. the ver.4/5/6 all use the same mounting brackets and foglights. i would recommend getting the aftermarket foglight brackets from kartboy which eliminate the problem of wiggly fogs.
2.) c.)???
3.) chris (i-club user dutch555)
let me know of any other ?'s or if you need more details. i also have most of the part #'s for the factory ver.4 front bumper assembly.

Jim,
Thanks for the help!
Fortunately, a JDM rebar was relatively inexpensive (~$110CDN) so I went that way instead of cutting my bar.
I'll check with Kartboy for the fog mounts... I know the stock mounts are ~$38CDN for the pair, so I'm hoping Kartboy's won't be too pricy! I think I know someone in the area who can throw some together too. :)
My parts guy @Subaru is pretty good, so I don't think I've missed anything in ordering... I've asked for the V4 bumper skin, JDM rebar, and appropriate clips/bolts. Fogs are aftermarket (mounts too!), and blinkers I've just ordered from Procarparts.com (clears). Hopefully that's all I need... otherwise I'll be finding out the hard way. ;)
How difficult is it for a DYI job? I don't need to have my car down and out for a couple days while I try to figure things out!

Hey dude!
Alls I know is that its basically the same as putting a V5-6 bumper on (US bumper). You'll need a bumper skin, the rear metal bumper support (re-bar...I dunno why people call em "re-bars???") foglights and everything.
BUT, I know that Mikey is selling a WHOLE ENTIRE V4 bumper kit, with the Hella fogs and everything for $700 CDN (hes from TO too ;) )
you may wanna contact him before buying anything! it has a little lip too! go check the private class.
C ya next Rally X! :D

Gooseman!!!
How's things by you? I'm still lovin' that front skid plate!! (safety first, and all that! :D)
I saw the add that Mikey put out, but I'm really skeptical about running a fiberglass. I priced it out, and getting a new one (from SOC) really isn't that much more... and you know that your bumper isn't going to explode. Plus he wanted to trade the "rear metal bumper support" ;) and I don't really want to give up any of my pieces.
Total cost for me so far (CDN, not incl taxes):
Bumper skin: $292
JDM rebar: $100
Blinkers (clear): $125-ish ($79US)
Fog-light mounts: $38
Hella 500 (pair): $115
Total so far: $ 670
I'm not including painting, 'cause I would've had to do that anyway. I lose out on the lip ($200 US is the best price so far) and the STi fog covers ($90US) which may not fit over the lights anyway. All-in all, not a bad trade off for the piece of mind. :)
Cheers!
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Where did you find the rebar for 110$... last time i checked into it it, i was quoted 307.83$ CDN for the back beam and i was quoted 372.56$ CDN for the bumper face. This seems to be alot more than what you are talking about. I also already have the amber blinkers so those are not a problem (paid 20$ for them:) )
Please let me know where to go cause i was about to pay way too much.
Stefan

Guys, I helped Jim obtain the parts he needed for his changeover from the L version to the way it looks now.
The bumper beam part # is 57760FA400 $59.69 US dollars from Subaru. this price is cost plus 10% (about what subaruparts.com charges)
again he got the version 4, 3 piece lip from Dutch555. he got lucky and got his for a little less than $200 because dutch had one here in the states already, that a customer of his ended up not being able to mount on a 22B bumper. As far as time goes plan on (not including painting) 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. Jim used his old beam, just had to get a friend of his cut it with a torch. It would have been better to just order the correct beam in the first place.

Stef, Oddly enough, the V4 bumper is cheaper than the US-spec V5. Don't ask me why - very strange. Cost is about $325-ish, but the price I quoted was after 10% club discount.
You are quite right about the rebar - US Spec is over $300 and would probably fit under the V4 skin, but the JDM-spec rebar is $110-ish. It's much more light weight, but I would very much recommend against running into anything. ;)
Scott (or Jim :D): I've been in touch with dutch555 about the lip, and may splurge on it (even though the CDN dollar isn't the greatest. ) How do you find the quality? Can you send me some pics of the finished product (installed with lip)? Is it easy to remove the lip (in case of off-road excursions)?
Here's a pic of the V4 (with lip) in case anyone's confused - hopefully it will look this nice on MY car! :D:

The quality of the lip is good, and the install is fairly simple and straight forward. If you end up getting the one from Chris I would recommend dabbing some paint on the end of the bolts that go below the foglight so you can have a visual aid on where to drill the hole so you dont have to remember (you'll see what i'm talking about). Also, i had better luck mounting the outside pieces first and the middle last. I've taken my car through piles of snow and ice that nearly submerged the whole foglight and not had anything break. taking it off should be fairly simple, its a matter of removing 10 small screws and 2 bolts. I'm going to go outside now a take a few pics:)

Jim,
Thanks for your input! Pics you can email to me @:

I'll see if I can shrink them and then post them for you.
The only problem I see with this install (including the lip) is that it leads me to do others... With the front lip, I'm DEFINATELY going to need the rear spats, and the sedan rear wing just doesn't seem to fit... You know... just have to complete the look. :D

Pics sent (hopefully). Yeah I know what youre saying about the look:D I had to get the sideskirts and next i need the rear spats. The final thing i need to do to complete the look is to replace the wing with a version 5/6 or 22B. The cost of all this stuff adds up fast! Oh well--one thing at a time.

Skeandhu: did you say you found someone selling V4 fog light covers for $90? where did you find it?
I'm doing this bumper swap too. I got the V4 bumper (USD$215)and re-bar (USD$110) from Sugar. For fog lights I think the Hella 500 doesn't look very nice, and someone told me the PIAA 80 XT are too big for the openings on the bumper, so I bought the PIAA 520 SMR, and I took off the grill covers. The bad thing is it only has one screw sticking out from the bottom of the light, so I dunno how to fix it securly.
I just sent the bumper, re-bar, and everything to a shop yesterday. Do you guys know if there is anything I have to know before installing it? I got the V4 re-bar already, does it mean the bumper can be just bolt on or will I need to do any drilling and cutting? Thanks!
As for the look, I think V4 bumper doesn't really match with the V5 spoiler, so scottsubarus I think you are just fine!;) Too bad I can't get the lip because I'll just scratch it when I drive into my garage.:(

Jim: I received the pics you sent. Looks nice!!! I'll shrink them and post them this evening so the rest of the world can marvel. ;)
holam: I think that all (well, most?) aftermarket fogs are secured via a single screw in the bottom. There's a very helpful page in the i-club mods section about mounting PIAA 80s:
http://www.i-club.com/mods/piaa_80_xt.htm
Your PIAAs will probably mount in a similar fashion.
As for fog-light covers, I found them hyah:
http://www.prestige-motorsports.com/appearance.html
Not sure about the reliability of this place, or the quality of product, but I did find the link through the I-Club links page. Hopefully that means something! ;)
Also, I found a handy reference on how to swap from a US rebar to a JDM rebar. I realize, of course, that the CDN rebar is a smidge different... but the mounting points and technique for removal should be identical:
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=56
Short answer to your question - I don't think you'll have to do any drilling or cutting to fit the new bumper.
Finally, I think the 22B wing looks spectacular with the V4 bumper - as demonstrated by a Toronto-Subaru-Club member:
http://www.toronto-subaru-club.com/photoalbum/photos/rommel%20portugal/ownerstemplate.htm
It's purrrrrdy. :D
As you all can see, I have been doing a bit of research on the subject. The only thing I haven't been able to find, still, is if the aftermarket fogs will fit under the foglight covers. :(
In the mean time, I'm still debating on the lip... I might hold off a bit for the sake of $$$ (ouch!)

Jon, I'll send you some pics as soon as I get around to washing my car. Maybe tonight. I got those sideskirts you told me about and got one side put on. The drivers side was torn up pretty bad but for $40 i'm not complaining. It sure beats paying $200 for just one side:eek:  The last thing i still need is the rear spats. Where did you get yours from? And do they fit easily? Thanks,

Skeandhu: That's cool! Thanks for the links! I checked out the fog light link before, but it doesn't seem to tell how screw at the buttom of the fog is attached to the bracket behind the fog.
I went to the shop today, my friend there checked out my re-bar, and he said the re-bar (parts # 57760FA400)I bought seems to be very light and weak compared to the CDN and V5 re-bars. He showed me a car with V5 bumper, I reached into the inside and I could feel 2 pieces of metal, one is just as thick as the re-bar I got, but there is another one which is ~twice as thick. Do you guys know anything about that? Is there another re-bar I have to buy? Thanks man!

Jim - I'm still working on getting those pictures posted... But it'll get done, don't worry! :D
holam - The JDM bumper rebar basically just holds your bumper up. There is very little chance it would be able to withstand an impact.
You have the right rebar though! It would seem that the Japanese don't have the same tough crash standards that we do!!! Remember, CDN bumpers can survive 10kph, US bumpers can take 5kph, and JDM bumpers, well, just try not to hit anything!
I'm also told that the US-bumper rebar (for V5) won't fit under the V4 skin, but I'm not in a position to try it... ;)
I'm still trying to get more info on mounting the lights though... I'll pass on anything I find.
Cheers!
Kevin

Skeandhu: Thanks for all the information, it's sad to hear that the V4 re-bar is so weak.:( But what can I do? I've bought everything already, there's no turning back. Also, the V4 bumper is my dream for so many years. T_T
I'll probably buy the fog covers from the same place too.:)

Alrighty, here's the latest... One of my friends has a set of Subaru fogs that he may be willing to sell me. If I'm lucky, this means I won't have to worry about the trouble of mounting after-market fogs. Also, from what I've heard, it turns out the Hella fogs are not much better than Subaru fogs anyways (justa a Hella'v a lot cheaper!!!! )
Jim & holam - If you guys get the covers PULEEEEASE let me know if they fit over the fog lights. I realize that with Subaru fogs it would be easy to take out the fogs and put on the covers, but I REALLY don't want to do that if I don't have to!
I'll start posting pictures as the conversion begins... probably won't be 'till spring though. I don't have a garage, and I'll be damned if I'm doing it outside in anything less than 15C!! :D

holam - any tips you can pass on after doing the swap would be fantastic! I look forward to any pics you have, especially the finished product - can't wait to see it on a white car. ('course, I could just wait for mine... :D)
Here's a question: did you paint the grill pieces in mouth of the bumper (for lack of better term), or did you leave them black? I'm thinking of painting mine to look like the picture in my previous post (above somewhere), but I'm still debating...
I know Jim decided to leave his black, but I'm thinking the openning would look a bit too big on a white car...
Opinions?

About the grill thing, I'll just have it painted, since the original Ver4 has that part painted too. But it'll probably be quite hard to clean. Are you going to keep the licence plate in the front? If so, that will be even more difficult to clean.:o

i think some version 4's had it painted and some didn't. i think it varied depending on the color. if you look closely at the genuine subaru part, you can see the borderlines of where to tape off the unpainted part. i had a ton of pics of version 4 bumpers close up but i lost them when the computer crashed. in that collection was a very good close-up of a white car with it painted. i'll see if i can find them again. i dont think the holes for the plate line up with american plates. it wasnt ever designed to accomodate our plates. however it wouldnt be difficult to fabricate a bracket. seems odd that they never had this bumper in america but yet its available from subaru of AMERICA!?? who knows.

superboy: if you want clear signals for the V4, you can find them here:
http://www.procarparts.com/store/displayproduct.cfm?pmaker=Subaru&pmodel=94-02%20IMPREZA
Check the fifth item down. They're likely knock-offs; I don't think any JDM Subaru came with clear bumper lamps (though I may be proven wrong). I ordered mine last week, so I'm still waiting for my set.
holam: I have to keep my plate on my bumper. The cops have been getting kind of cranky about the tuner boys with their plates in the windshield. I guess the only way I could get around a front plate is to move to Quebec. :D
Jim: Ya, it's definately strange how we can order parts for cars that weren't available here. Maybe Subaru has finally realized that there's some cash to be made in selling their own merchandise abroad! (surprise, surprise!). If I remember correctly though, you can't get P1 or 22B parts without a S/N. What a rip.
I've checked out a couple of pics on Scoobynet, and most of the grills there look unpainted (even on the white cars). I wonder of it was particular to the Version #, or if the STi's were painted and the WRX were not... There's food for though.
I think I'll paint my grills though... looks meaner on a white car. ;)

Hi guys! I just finished my bumper swap today. Hope I can post the pics up soon.
After all, there are a few points I wanna share:
1. The re-bar is small and it has nothing for the fogs and the signals to attach to, so I think it will be easier and securer to buy the mounting brackets. I didn't get those, so my guy had to custom make a metal plate behind the bumper so the fog light can attach to it.
2. Make sure your paint man know where to paint and where to mask. I pm'ed him, but he didn't check message, so he didn't paint the grill, but the whole area around the fogs. Now I wonder how to make that look unpainted.
3. Install the signal lights before installing the fog lights. You'll need nuts and washers to hold the singals in place, with the fog lights not installed, you can stick ur hand into the bumper to hold the nuts and washers. If you installed the fogs lights already, u'll have a hard time installing the signals. In my case, I didn't buy the brackets, so the fogs have to be installed before the bumper is installed onto the car, that means I can't remove the fogs without removing the whole bumper first. Therefore, I had a hard time trying to hold the nuts washers.
That's about it, sorry it's a bit long, just hope u guys won't run into the same problems!;)

holam: Thanks for the tips! I look forward to seeing the finished product! :D BTW, if you want to send me the pictures, I'll post them up for you:

Here's the update on mine so far:
1) Received bumper skin two days ago; I'm picking up the rebar, fog mounting plates, and assorted clips this evening.
2) Clear signals from Procarparts - not going to happen. They won't use international credit cards. Also, I've done a bit more research and the general concensus is that they are not very reputable, nor is the quality that good. Haven't decided if I'm still going to try and find the clears, of if I should buy the JDM orange and smoke them (ie: make them look black). Cost for the clears will be ~$25-$30 more than the stock bits.
3) I ended up buying my friends stock fogs. They fit the bumper perfectly (duh  ) and will save me sooooooo much hassle. New Hellas would've been cheaper, but I'm willing to pay for convenience. ;)
So now, just to find the blinkers and get the bumperskin painted... and wait till it warms up a bit around here before I attempt the swap!!! -30C is not attractive for working outside. Might see if I can borrow a friends garage for a few hours though...

STiShawn,
Thanks for the pointer - MRT sells them as well. For the sake of convenience, however, I've decided to just go with JDM signals. Too much clear on a white car starts to look a bit strange (in my opinion anyway. ;))
