what kind of tape for headlights

Yeah I know it is a stupid question, any suggestions
| ChrisDP | 05-25-2005 02:08 PM |
racer tape works for me... I get mine from Stock Car Products http://www.stockcarproducts.com/
Some people use blue painter's tape, but after a little experimenting on my own, I personally won't use it because I don't think the adhesive is strong enough to really help contain broken glass.

Gaffer's tape.
| CirrusWRX | 05-26-2005 12:42 PM |
Or get some x-pel / rockblocker stuff (that thick plasticy sticky cover stuff cut to size) and never worry about taping your lights again :)
| volkl23 | 05-27-2005 02:21 AM |
total noob here, but what is the purpose of taping lights? In case debris from the car in front hits it and shatters it?

Yeah, that's basically it. The idea being if something gets tossed up (piece of a tire, rock, debris from the track) and smacks the light, it'll probably shatter and leave even MORE debris to be kicked up, become slippery, etc.
So at least if it shatter is SHOULD hold most of it together. But the x-pel or rockblocker stuff is WAY better. It's super thick, basically "invisible" and would protect the lens both on the street or the track, and doesn't require taping/ taking off every time you go out.

Do STi headlights have glass covers? The WRX covers are plastic.
Do STi headlights have glass covers? The WRX covers are plastic.
Don't think so- it's just the thought of trying to minimize ANY debris flying around at all, but you are correct in your assertion that 99% of the vehicles out there today don't have glass covers like many of the older vehicles.
I think it's a fair arguement to say taping your headlights on a modern car PROBABLY doesn't make much of a difference. But on an older BMW or heck, even an older Subaru, those covers are most definitely glass.

Speaking of flying debris, if I track my car, will I have a ton of chips on my hood? I've seen people tape portions of their hood. Is that what they are preventing?
| ChrisDP | 05-27-2005 02:10 PM |
Yes, tape on lower lip is definitely a good idea... hot sticky tires on track tend to fling road debris up in a hurry... if someone decides to go agricultural and bring some dirt/gravel back on the track, people will shortly be running over it full-throttle with sticky tires which means it will be getting shot off the track and at the following car fairly quickly.

I feel so bad for the pour souls who bring their damned near brand new cars to the track and use 5 rolls of racer tape over the entire front end, fenders, roof, side mirrors, wings, etc. in hopes of protecting their 4 week old baby.

cripes, forget track use, you need that stuff on a daily basis out here. the highways here are horrible for debris and rocks and crap being kicked up at you. my hood/front bumper has so many chips/knicks/scratches on it, its quite sad

Been to a lot of auto-x's over the years and can't say I have seen that. It would be a hysterical sight though. I wonder what they think they are going to plow into - backwards... If you are working a corner station when somebody like that is out better pay a little more attention
The red F355 with painters tape is just wrong..

When car clubs show up with a bunch of autox noobs someone allways brings out tape and stuff gets out of hand. Sometimes you even need to cut the hood free of tape just to tech the car.

I'm going to get the front clear bra'd soon- the track is rather tough on paint (and potentially lights).

On one hand, I give a lot of credit to people for bringing their obvious pride and joy's out to an autox, track event, or rally/ rallyx, but on the other, more sensible hand, I have to laugh at these people who have yet to realize a racing car != show car.
Dents, scrapes, chips, etc. all come with the territory. Either live with it, or drive for a group that can afford to rebuild/repaint after every race :D

I'm just yankin yer crank..... how the heck did that guy get in/out of the car? dukes of hazard style? If so, wonder if he taped up the interior to to avoid getting dirt on his seats.

Maybe I am missing something...but why would you need to tape up the front end of your car..like that Ferrari up there, when you're running in these SOLO2 events...solo. Nobody is in front of you to kick up anything that could hit you. I can justify taping behind the wheels..but the front bumper?
| afpdl | 06-01-2005 04:16 PM |
Hitting cones at 40mph does leave marks. It can mark up the front bumper, the doors, sideskirts, and wheels from time to time. It also kinda knocks all of your front end bodywork loose, over time you break all of those little clips that hold the plastic parts together.

Ohh..just don't hit the little cones then  Heheh yeah I guess I was lucky...when I used to solo2 I think I only clipped it with my tires..and at worst it got stuck in my wheel well a little =p

Nope - thats the last glass headlight that hasn't been replaced with a plastic one. The intake would be on the driver's side - the passenger side is the exhaust side.
