70% tint anyone? part 1

Petrus 08-02-2005 04:23 AM

70% tint anyone?
Ok, so RI has really pathetic tint laws... but would anyone mind showing me how light 70% tint really is on a WRX? haha, I'd be surprised if anyone even had 70% tint
brianbot5000 08-02-2005 04:26 AM

Plan on driving through a nuclear test range?
Plan on driving through a nuclear test range?
i dont' understand, but if you can explain, that would be awesome

and is it really worth following the "law" on tint and having almost no tint at all? go dark, or not at all. at least 35%, that is legal almost everywhere, minus where you live, lol.
Petrus 08-02-2005 04:37 AM

Nuclear test ranges eh? Not in the near future (dude, seriously, what are you talking about???)

And the dark or not at all is a good point but hassles = t3h suck lol
Handsdown 08-02-2005 05:02 AM
Plan on driving through a nuclear test range?
i think you're misunderstanding how tint works.

70% means 70% is let through, not blocked.

therefore, 30% rating means darker than 50% rating. and 15% rating is darker than 30% rating.

nuclear test range you'd want 0% tint made of lead.
2.5RSMatt 08-02-2005 05:06 AM

^^^

mmhmm.
WillDenham 08-02-2005 05:13 AM

0% would be... a bitch. 5% though, now that's some dark stuff. I'm thinking of 15 myself.
andrewanderson 08-02-2005 05:24 AM

I have 45 and it is plenty dark. My guess is you could get away with 65 or 70% and not get cited.
Handsdown 08-02-2005 05:31 AM

well i got mine done in south florida, so mine is 32%. that kinda sucks because legal tint in the state where i go to school is 35% and if they test me i won't pass.

however, in florida they don't stock anything lighter.

i dunno, 70 will probably look like the rear windows of a station wagon, a lot of companies put 70% tint on from the factory... like BMW and mercedez and stuff.
Petrus 08-02-2005 05:32 AM

noone actually has 70%... I knew it, kinda pointless not to get a good amount of tint :shrugs:
andrewanderson 08-02-2005 06:24 AM

The tint will still save your interior even at %70. And %70 looks better then no tint.
LookingForPower 08-02-2005 06:41 AM

I was talking to the one of the best most reputable shops in the area out here in cali, and the guy tests all tints to see how well they work, He took a Black light with a white shirt, and put up all the tints to see which tint % actually blocked the most UV light. and guess what % it was.... Clear.... thats right he said Clear was the ONLY color that actually blocked ALL of the light

Lead about 5 feet thick.

And Superman underneath the car to make sure you got through fast enough. :D
8Complex 08-02-2005 09:51 AM

Illinois - Can't put anything on the side windows next to the driver/passenger... can put anything behind that. Horribly sucks ass.
wrx2.0 555 08-02-2005 10:09 AM

I have 20% all the way around and love it...........5% is just too dark, period......
Sargeant_002 08-02-2005 10:12 AM

I used to have a car with 5%....man what a beeyotch trying to back up at night and such....next car will be about 20% at the darkest....
WRB_in_my_veins 08-02-2005 10:19 AM
I have 20% all the way around and love it...........5% is just too dark, period......
Same here. I have 20% all the way around. I love it during the day, I've even gotten so used to it that I can't tell it's there unless I open the windows. Night time is another story. I get some 'tunnel vision' as it's so dark I have a hard time looking out the sides for turning or backing up. Just a warning to you if you decide to go dark.
2.5 SUBY 08-02-2005 10:22 AM

Yup, RI does suck for there MANY car laws.. Petrus, PM me, where are you located in RI.
Nasiocks 08-02-2005 10:24 AM

Anything below 35% sucks for night driving.
i102spd 08-02-2005 10:35 AM

dont waste your time or money w/ 70%, unless you've got your %'s backwards and you're actually talking about 30%... i always thought 70% was what most cars come with stock, just a hint of the slightest tint... i used to have 35% and that barely even looked like it was there... kinda just looked like dirty windows... then i got 5% and loved the look, but way way too dark at nite... and then i wrecked the car and got my suby... gonna go w/ 20%... and dont worry bout the cops, unless they're real pricks by you... i got a ticket w/ 35%, but never w/ 5%... go figure... so long as you dont drive like an @$$ in front of them you shouldnt have a problem
bournehall 08-02-2005 11:24 AM

I've got 35% all the way around. I like it alot, not too dark, but also dark enough. I was surprised at how dark it was when they got done with it. It looks a lot darker and nicer than just "dirty windows". However, If I could have gotten darker where I went, I would have gone with 20% all around.
MattJP 08-02-2005 01:54 PM

I got 35% all around too and like it. I think if you did the rear window at 20% the overall look (with 35% on the sides) would still be acceptable.
animes2k 08-02-2005 02:07 PM

I had 35% (legal limit) on my GSR and it was nice. I've got 20% on the side windows of my S (rear is plastic) and it's a tad dark at night. I wouldn't ever tint the windshield unless I lived in Florida or SoCal... I'm thinking I'll be going with 32-35% on the wagon when I get a few extra $$ (about $300 locally for what I've heard is 'the best' tint from a very good shop - Formula One [linky] brand tint from LA Tint in NoVa.

Doing the rear window at 20% sounds like a good idea...

They also have a clear 99.9% UV shield.
1illusion 08-02-2005 02:28 PM

Actually in RI it's 70% total transmissiveness. If you put 70% tint over the factory tint it will still be illegal. It's the same here in CA for the front windows. I have 50% on the front and I've been pulled over several times for other things and they've never said a peep about my front windows. Although my back windows are 5% so it offsets how dark the front windows really are. I contimplated getting 70% but but it wasn't quite dark enough, even when combined with the mild factory tint, so I said screw it and went with 50%.

you can't tell well in this pic, but you can get the idea, even 50% is a tad light for my taste, but if it keeps the fuzz at bay and still protects the interior I'm happy.

Thumper23 08-02-2005 02:36 PM

I've got 35% and something is better than nothing
sonicsuby 08-02-2005 02:37 PM

I've got 13% on the rear and 32% on the front :D
SlickRick51586 08-02-2005 02:47 PM

I live in South Florida and tint world did mine 20% all around except the front window for around 140.

I have several friends with 10-15% all around cept for the front the have never been pulled over for the tint (Black 2004 GTO with 15%, Black SRT-4 with 10%). They both have had their cars tinted for over a year, and they both drive fast/have been pulled over with tint and have not received tickets.

I donno how your state is, but I think your being a little paranoid.

I've had mine for 3 weeks and have not been pulled over, today a cop parked beside me and didnt say anything.
Generally, I don't think cops care; unless they cannot make out the occupants profile, (which depending on light you can sometimes see with 20%).

it's all heresay, do what you want. If you don't want a ticket go with the legal limit... 70% is crap though and a waste of money in my opinion.
Jesse00 08-02-2005 03:47 PM

I have 50% front and 15% rear. This way I can see things decently enough if baby joe wants to be road killed. Besides, where I live, theres a no front tint law. So 50% is what i can do. Cops wont notice it cuz it looks quite normal compare to the rear 15%.
itjustWoRX 08-02-2005 07:58 PM

the NY limit is 70% and i'd say a good half of the drivers where i live have some kind of window tint. I have 35% all around and it's reflective, with a 20% windshield strip. No problems with police, I even showed my car to a cop who stopped by a meet one night to make sure we weren't causing trouble...then took a look at the cars.

My brother got pulled over in my car THREE days after i got my tint done, by a state trooper. Since i couldn't put the windows down for 3-5 days, my brother opened the door just a tad so he could explain to the officer that he couldnt use the windows because THEY HAD JUST BEEN TINTED. Cop pulled his gun and said to REMAIN IN THE VEHICLE, meanwhile my brother has his hands up and is sayin "i cant use the windows sir!!!" The cop understood, gave him a speeding ticket and took off.

i guess my car passed the NYS Trooper test.

And with an SRT- .... ahh nevermind.
go1d1e 08-02-2005 09:50 PM

Limit in Missouri is only on the front drivers/passenger windows. 35% +/- 3%. I know as I had 20% all round and got a ticket. So the front is now 35%, the rest is still 20. No problems seeing out the back, even at night.

subiedude05 08-03-2005 12:09 AM

i just got 20% all around today, looks great.
Petrus 08-03-2005 01:14 AM

There's a subie at a dealership that i've been looking into getting. It already has a little tint and looks nice... if I get that one I'll just chance it and enjoy the badassness of the delicious tint-mobile.
Davenow 08-03-2005 08:52 AM

Anyone know what the tint limit is in $Texas??
