Airfreshners part 1

03WREX 05-04-2004 10:56 AM

Airfreshners ? ? ?
I am in search for an airfreshner that will last longer than a few weeks! I've been using the squash refills for a while now but at $7 dollars a refill and them not lasting for much longer than 2 weeks, I'm done with them.

Can someone suggest a nice smelling airfreshner that actually lasts over a month? Is something like that even in existence? You know what would be really cool? If theres an airfreshner that plugs into the cigarette lighter, kind of like those glade airfreshners for the home. Anyways... give me your advice please.
willz23 05-04-2004 11:25 AM

I remember Brookstone selling one that plugs into the cigarette lighter, it's supposed to restore the factory scent in your car by ionizing the odors, it ran for about $30, i've never used it before though hopefully someone can confirm its usefullness, i'd like to get one too, if it works.

I like the smell of coffee.....and keep roasted beans under one of my front seats. The bags the shops sell it in do a good job of keeping it fresh, and allow you to open it gradually for the intensity of odor you're after. I always get comments, and it's amusing to drive real java heads for their fix when the smell is surrounding them.....talk about a jonesin' a.m. drive. :)

I used the cheap tree one that smells like vanilla. Lasts a good month or so and so cheap you can toss them when they quit on you.

The coffee bag is pretty clever. Although I do like the smell of coffee I don't think I'd want it as an airfreshner for my car... probably would help waking up in the morning though. I had a similar situation when my girlfriend left her box of fabric softener in my car after doing laundry. Made the car spring fresh :D

Has anyone ever used those beads? They're small beads I think you're supposed to pour in your ash tray??
bhall 05-04-2004 04:26 PM

cinna-berry (classic tree [pink in color]) is the best out there. 3 bucks for a pack of 3. They only last like 3 weeks strong but for a buck a peice you can not beat it.
I also have had 2 of those "ionizers". I dont know if they work or not since they dont put out a smell but they buzz like crazy and take up your cig lighter which I need for other things.

Get the Cinna-berry if you dont like them I will buy them off of you for 3 bucks:D

Meguiars sells an odor eliminator. Works really, really well.
Then I follow it up with febreeze. Spritz a bit every couple of days & you're good. I get compliments all the time. The bottles are cheap and last forever.
whoosh 05-04-2004 08:14 PM

natures best, eat beans every day.
WanganRunner 05-04-2004 11:10 PM

I've got an Air Spencer freshener that's the squash scent, and it's only recently begun to give out, and even then just a bit. It lasted a hella long time, which freshener are you using? Can we get a pic or a link?
BlackAndBlue 05-05-2004 03:27 AM

armor all and not fartin too much
Uncle Ben 05-05-2004 04:34 AM

Yeah those trees are hella strong in terms of scent, you could always buy a pack and toss it under the seat or something so you don't have it dangling on your rearview mirror. I may do that in the near future...
03WREX 05-05-2004 10:40 AM

I may just try those trees. They're so cheap that even if they don't last it's still worth it. I may check out the meguiars odor eliminator too.

As far as what I've been using, it's the squash kind. It's in a blue plastic case. I admit sometimes they do last for almost a month but the last couple I got died in less than two weeks and at $7 a refill it's not worth it. Here's a pix...

I just open one and hang it from my tilt wheel lever. It is out of the way, not hanging from the mirror and strongest where it counts, by the driver:D
1DOWNCLOWN 05-05-2004 12:19 PM

just start throwing whitecastle boxes in the back seat

I have the same one too, it's more for a rice/bling effect than actually long-lasting smell

Oh, alternatively you could also get any of those globe or oval air fresheners that hold liquid rather than inserts... a big bottle of liquid scent is cheap, and it lasts until it all evaporates at which point you just top it off.
peterex 05-05-2004 11:23 PM

Dryer sheets under the front seats work pretty well, although they wear off kind of quickly.
2cam16 05-06-2004 12:07 AM

A can of My Shaldan air freshener (Japanese) in my console cupholder.Lasts a month or so. :)
03WREX 05-06-2004 01:05 AM

hmm... i remember those myshaldan. I've used them before the current one I'm using. I don't think I ever found a scent that I really liked that much. At least I don't remember a good one...
seasons 05-06-2004 01:07 AM

no air fresheners here..

I'm just nuts and keep my interior showroom clean as much as possible.

I swear after a year I still have new car smell sometimes. it's weird

I used to use those all the time, but they seem to dry up pretty quick(especially when its hot). Good thing is that they're really cheap.
gone2vegas 05-06-2004 01:43 AM

the air spencers last longer than 2 weeks. part of it is that you are used to the smell. in my old car, even weeks after I stopped smelling the squash, if someone else would get in my car they would always comment on the smell.

same goes for the my shaldans.

I would also keep a few old refills under the seats and the new one in the holder. you think it doesn't smell, but it does.

Hmm, The way I like to take the corners, I'd have coffee beens all over my back seat...
dome 05-06-2004 11:12 AM

a tree under the seats works for me.

call me crazy but i actually like the New car scent trees. It smells nothing at all like a new car, but it smells clean. lasts a while too.

That's not been the case this time. I agree sometime you get used to the smell but definitely the last few times they've only lasted about 2 weeks. I didn't even bring up the fact that my airfreshner was out, my girlfriend did.
Jonny722 05-06-2004 11:44 AM

my good friend just dumped two entire cups filled with milkshakes in my front seat. If your going for the rotten milk smell, give it a few days in the sun and you wont be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, me too.....but I'll keep the bags in the door "holder" thingies so the spillage is confined.

I had a new car smell 10k miles later until my girl's teenage brother stayed with us for a few days. 3 days with him in the car and that was it, damn guys reek.

:furious:

Febreeze works well for me - not new car, but definitely fresh.
WanganRunner 05-06-2004 07:23 PM

Try the "Giga" line of air fresheners from Air Spencer, fits right over the air vents. Looks like a little cylinder, mine just recently died after like 4 months.
latchkeykid 05-06-2004 10:19 PM

i'll throw in my 2 cents as well...i personally love the glade plugins. i don't even have a container i just open a refill and throw it in my car and it makes my car smell nice. tropical rain smells good.......

I'm assuming your friend is no longer with us? If my friend did that they wouldn't live too long after the mishap.

My wife has this in the minivan, last a couple months. Don't know if you can get this in the States.
Dendrobium 05-07-2004 01:55 AM

My gf got me this one.. smells great and it was only 9.99 CDN at a local auto parts store.

(Mine is not hot pink like the above though, mine is aqua/yellow)

It smells really good -- my best description is like "squash" + "bubblegum" on "steroids". Cuz it's a liquid with a very small foam capillary tube to release it (rather than a huge vent) -- it lasts much longer than the giga spence or the plastic beads (I've had it last about 4 months in summer, and almost 6 months in winter)

Also, it fits perfectly in that cupholder spot by the e-brake handle.

BTW - one last thing - ignore the cheesy name XES (yes, "sex" spelled backwards  ) -- then again, if it does get you some "XES" - I'm sure no one will complain :alien:

cheers!

Hmmm. It says on the pack it's a telephone air freshener? Is that like for fresher phone xes?

Actually, I think it includes some led's and a circuit that picks up cell phone ringing signals -- ie. the whole air freshener will light up/flash whenever someone's cell phone rings near by.

it says so here:

 Those guys are like 100km away from me. I kinda like the sound of the other item though... "It contains the glass paper inside to make fantasy effection. When putting this product in the sunshine, which you should feel it is real and magical. Oil made, it will be more durable."

Excellent Chinglish!
Night Kid 05-07-2004 10:26 PM

go to your local asian market and pick up one of these! only $2.99 and it lasts for almost 2 month!

edit: i forgot to mention the name. its "my shaldan"

I got this one. It snaps onto one of the vent fins, and is low profile.
PullinSmuts 05-08-2004 02:47 PM

may i suggest ozium, its about 5 bucks at pep boys for a bottle, keep it in your glove compartment and give a spray off once every couple of days or when your car starts to smell bad. it works really well they have good flavors, plus its used as a hospital disinfectant so it eliminates bacteria and smoke from the air.
lawn boy 05-08-2004 04:23 PM

the vanilla ones that clip onto the vents work well and last long, even with the window of my car being down. However when i would have the drivers vents on it would irritate my eyes.
