All Weather Floor Mats - Poor Choice for STi

I bought a new 2005 STi at the beginning of July and one of the options I chose was the all season floor mats. They are a heavy duty rubber material that so far have proven useful for trapping dirt. However there are two major problems with them for me  - both concerning the driver's side mat:
1) The mat does not secure to the floor mat post to keep it from sliding around. Consequently the mat does work its way up under the pedals and I have to readjust quite often driving around town.
Positioning of Mat on Driver's Side:

2) The driver's side mat has actually ripped or torn open where my gas/brake foot rests. This is in less than 1 month and still under 1000 miles. So not much use at all. Maybe I place my foot strangely, I don't know. Regardless, it's disappointing :furious: .
Picture of tear in floor mat:

In conclusion, I would recommend against the all weather mats for a new STi purchase. I plan on getting some berber mats from Mastwrowrx.com and trying them out.

I put mine on top of my floormats and never had a problem. Floormats are still clean, and they didn't slide anywhere.

ditto, although my driver's side mat wore a similar hole fairly quickly as well. I really like the mats in my rig, good for keeping the mud and debris from being ground into the carpet.

I guess putting in the all weathers on top of some carpeted ones is a good idea. My STI didn't come with any regular mats though as I ordered it with the all weathers.
I must admit, they do a good job of trapping dirt and are easy to just shake out.
The tear is really weak though. Also, the mat provides a poor feel for me under my gas/brake foot. This is in the same spot where the tear occurred. It just feels spongy and inaccurate. From searching it sounds like the Canadian STi mats are/were the best solution. They have the heel pad and everything, but they don't seem to be for sale anywhere anymore.

I've never liked the rubber mats. I mean, you have the mats there to protect your carpet, but i've seen some huge ones with big lips on either side to keep the water/snow/mud inside it and never touch the carpet... now that is a good thing, but i think the mats are ugly... so yeah you save the carpet from wear and tear, but I think this would only be something to be worried about on a lease car or one you plan on selling again shortly...
I do like to keep my stuff super nice and brand-new looking, but i also know that it's the floor, it's bound to get dirty, just knock your feet off a bit more before you get in.
Otherwise, I think that sucks that your mat broke down on you so quickly! You'd think they'd last a lot longer than that

I've had my Subaru All-Weather mats for over three years now and they're holding up really well. They look great after washing them - almost new. I also opted to put them over my WRX floor mats - it really alleviates the sliding around dilemma. Granted you shouldn't have to put the rubber mats over the carpeted ones in order for it to do its job, but hey, this isn't a perfect world ;)
I'll be selling WRX mats some time later this week when my Prodrive ones get in, so PM me or be on the lookout for my sales thread :)

slap some professional grade velcro on the bottom of the mat and theyll stay put just fine.
| Astroguy | 07-26-2005 02:55 PM |
I had the same thing happen as far as the tear is concerned. Just fill the backside of the tear solid with black silicon sealant so the sealant is flush with the bottom of the mat. It will also make it so it won't feel so spongy anymore since it will be solid rubber under your heel.

That's a great idea Astro. I'll give that a shot.
The industrial velcro also sounds like a good option before buying some mats just so that my mats will stay put :).

I got the all weather mats in my WRX and found the driver's one slipped up under the pedals so I cut a small slit in the rear left corner and looped a cable tie through to secure it to the hook in the carpet. I think the velcro suggestion is a better idea, though.
I agree they do not fit the contour of the floor that well but mine have not torn yet (only 3 months old, though).
I would go back to the dealer and see what they can do for you - you ordered the mats with the car so they might help out.
BTW, I orderd my all weather mats with the car and it came with the carpeted mats as well. The rubber ones were in a bag in the trunk.
Cheers
Mark

The dealer should hav egiven you the carpet mats along with your all weather ones. You paided for both sets. The carpet ones are standard equipement and then I assume you paid extra for a set of all weathers? Maybe I am wrong and my dealer jsut took good care of me and gave me both. Anyone else with all weatehr want to share?
Back to the main topic. I have all weathers in my LGT. Only have 800 miles on the car though and I think PDXT has put more of them on then I have :) For the little driving I did do I had no problems.

Mine wore a hole in the same spot as well, I was really disappointed. I tossed them out and bought some beefy generic all-seasons from Wal-mart or something and they work well. The back seat OE rubber mats I left though since no one really sits back there, they still look new :D

i got a free set of highland all weather floormats from where i work. they're much larger than the oem all weather matts, so there's a lot more protection (and i'm sure they hold a lot more water/dirt). great quality rubber material, doesn't slide around much at all.
my car only sees the carpet floormats when the sun comes out (which is rare here in cleveland) ;)

I second this idea. Last November, I also had a tear form under my right foot on my driver's side mat and I similarly applied ShoeGoo (because I already had it vs. buying black silicone, though good idea for future). It has held up rather well, though I may need to replace it this fall. Additionally, before next winter, I may buy a cheap set at Walmart, etc. that covers more of the foot well.

Cannon mats from www.macneilauto.com are some of the best aftermarket ones. Had a set in my old '94 Integra. They're still in my brother's '95 Civic (gave them to him when I sold the 'Teg).
I have OE rubber mats in my RS. No problems at all. They slide a bit, but not much. The only "problem" with these, that I never saw with the Cannons, is that the rubber is very susceptible to climate. In the summer, they turn very soft/flexible. In winter, they're hard as a rock.
I love carpeted mats, but holes wear in them, dirt sticks, they look like crap after a while. Rubber mats last forever and you can clean them with a hose. That, and "banging your feet off before you get in" only works in places where it doesn't seriously snow. ;)
(Or in places that don't get joyous mud seasons...)

I third this idea. I did this to my mats when they were brand new. I did the whole area where my heel rests. A few friends with Subaru rubber mats had the cracking problem, so I wanted to avoid it.

Well I filled the torn area of the mat with the black silicon (just on the back mind you) and also bought some velcro and pretty much edged the underside of the mat with it. Whew! Major Improvement! The heel action is much firmer now with the silicone in place. And I have had 0 shifting, even during spirited driving due to the velcro.
Highly recommend the black silicon and velcro combo to other new All Weather Mat users.

Follow-Up on the Velcro and Silicon stuff:
I pulled out the driver's side mat today to clean up a bit, and it was extremely tough to pull out due to the velcro. When I did get it out, some of the velcro had decided to stay on the carpet instead of coming out with the mat like it was supposed to. I don't think the velcro adhesive is up to the task of sticking to the rubber mat. A decent amount stayed though so we'll see.
1 full strip of black silicon that was in one of the grooves of the mat fell out. I stuck it back in there, but was disappointed to see that it had not adhered to the mat like I had thought.

No, I would say that this is quite typical. My rubber mats have done the same thing, and I have about the same quibbles with them. This is ESPECIALLY bad when you are trying to drive precise, and your heel falls in a 'hole' left back the rubber giving away. This has more than once caused me to have my foot between the gas and brake when trying to depress the brake. Let it be known that the gas wins in this instance. This only happened as:
1. The mat broke and it took me a while to figure out why my foot was being placed erronously
2. The STi was new to me, so I was still trying to figure out the car.
My brother has had the SAME issue with his mats.

Here is what I got back from Mastro:
The biggest killer with any carpet is dirt and sand. If the heel is dug into it with dirt and crud, it acts like a grinder.
There is a heel pad available, in fact it could be added to existing mats, it just didn't seem to fit the look customers were after.
The Bailey mats are odd. Not very heavy and the foam back slides alot. We looked at them as a vendor.
I'd be happy to arrange something with exisiting owners of these mats to add a heelpad. It would cover the wear area. I'll get with my excellent vendor on this.
We've had great response to these mats, but if we can improve satisfaction, we're happy to try to arrange something.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
So it sounds like a heel pad option with the berbers may be in the future, plus a retro-fit heel pad for you current berber mat owners as well :disco: .
I'll update this thread with anything new.

I just had a real bad experience where the clutch pedal was getting suck down because it was catching th edge of the sliding all weather mat. I didn't realize that the velcro underneath had finallly melted off the mat due to heat. It still stuck like hell to the carpet though hah.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to the mastro mats. Plus they look nicer IMO.

The all-weather mats from Subaru are garbage. I gave mine away to DarioC for his car because he hooked me up with some sideskirts before they really wore through. I could never sell something of poor quality and feel good about it.....The driver's side one had a tiny hole in it when I gave them to him. I bought weathertechs for the front and rear. best 100 bucs I ever spent to keep the car clean - Dan

I would have picked them up myself but the STi shell carpets are blue, they might look nicer with a black carpetery....definitly a nice classy touch.

Well I have my Mastro mats now. They look good, I've gotten several compliments and inquiries about them. They seem tough, they don't slide around, and they have a heel pad! So far so good.
To be completely honest, I'm not 100% sure that the heel pad is in the absolute best location/distance from the pedal. See pic below with my foot placement and also pic with All Weather Mat overlaying new mat. You can see where I wore through the All weather mat, and how the heel pad on the new mat is positioned in reference to the hole.
I feel that if the pad was 1" further forward, it would be spot on. But that will change with different sized feet and different preferences of heel position too. For reference, I wear a size 10 1/2 shoe.
