Anyone paint their Calipers?...
Yeah, I know it might be better posted in one of the other forums, but Its also a "dress-up" question too.
The stock calipers are like that bare AL - kinda ugly - and more noticable now that the stock rims are off. I was THINKING like blue would be a nice color to paint them. My car is Silver, and that blue that the WRX badge had around it (on the trunk) would be a nice offset color. And yeah, I know that if I do it, I have to use Hi-tech paint specificaly made for stuf like that.
What do you guys think?
Also, do you think its a bad thing - since probably the Calipers can;t cool off as fast with the paint on them (thats a guess) - so maybe bare metal is 'better'???

lots of people do this, if you do a search you can find some links and more info as well, just buy some 5 dollar spray brake caliper paint or the more expensive and higher quality kind of brake caliper paint that you paint on. Looks nice, I would do it buy I don't have the time. ;)

Yeah, but what color would you do it (on a Silver car)?? I'm up for suggestions.
(I was goonna load it up in Photoshop, but no real good pix).

u could get a blue i badge and that would go good with it too

Yo
I have a red WRX and painted part of my calipers red ... I think they look sweet. However I deleted the pics because I was trying to update my pics on my server. However I'll get some more pics this coming weekend if my Tanabe SRM and Stromung dp comes in ...

After just one winter here in the northeast the calipers are already rust covered. They look really bad and will definitely need to be painted. I was thinking of black with a black car.

I have blue Calipers!
I used the Folia Tec or G2 kit(they are the same).
The kit was around $45 but the calipers are nice and glossy. I have done the high temp spray paint and it will NOT look the same.
My calipers are sooth and shiny. I can rub them with my finger and they are wet and shiny looking.
I have 17" Sport Edition Fox2 wheels and it looks great. Sorry the pictures I have are with the stock wheels...
If you have questions let me know.

WRBlue with matching shoes?
| Hazdaz | 03-17-2002 09:10 AM |
Hmm, I think im going to go with the blue...
Now, that Folia Tek stuff you gues are talking about - I am assuming that that is the stuff that makes it look like the Calipers have a "smooth plastic coating" aroudn them (like its THICK, and not just a simple thin paint)... right? wrong?
I might even paint them today.

Ok call me dumb but how did you guys paint your calipers, did you just jack your car upa nd take off each wheel then take the brake apart and paint the caliper seperatly?
I want to paint my calipers but I have very little technical knowhow but I don't think It could be that h ard to take the brake off and put it back on.
Any info would help
thanks
Bryan

Hold your horses!
At a subaru meet yesterday a fellow member told me how he painted his calipers. He has done it withe EVERY car he has had...and he has had a few.
1. Wash thoroughly with dishwashing soap and water.
2. Air dry with compressed air if you have it.
3. Testor's paint.........yes the model paint they sell at walmart! Testor's enamel model paint. He figures it takes about 3 of those little bottles to do all the calipers. And it looks good! I saw it! Make sure it is enamel though...and just brush it on with a model brush. It is about 97 cents a bottle! Did i say it works? Hellya!
I will edit the post with a link to some pix from the meet.

"Testor's enamel"? When you say its a model paint, do you mean like toy models? If thats the case, then that can't possibly be a hi-temp paint, can it be?
I would feel more than nervous putting a non-hi-temp paint on the breaks just to save a few bux.

In my opinion, painting the stock caliper doesn't look really good. It's still look like a chunk of aluminum. But if you had gotten a 4pot caliper and paint them, now that would look really nice, like ImprezedRS.

Yes.. it may still look like a chunk of Alluminum, BUT calipers look like CRAP when they get rusty!! painting looks GREAT... even the stockers :D

Well correct me if I am wrong, but I believe ALL Calipers are Aluminim - whether they are stock or aftermarket. So I think they will look like a "chunk of AL" no matter what - just some will be painted, some not. I think painting them will obvioulsy keep them from lookin all dirt and grey.
| dead-eye | 03-17-2002 01:34 PM |
IMO, don't paint the stock calipers. It only draws attention to crappy brakes.

True, I get what you're saying. But the calipers I'm talking about that doesn't look like chunk of aluminum are those Subaru 4pot and Porsches, which has a layer of plastic/paint or whatever it is that makes the caliper smooth. And if you paint those caliper, it doesn't look like a chunk of aluminum and it looks smoother.

Lol, you guys are brushing on those little Testor's bottles? (I made platic models for years) You should take it to a guy with an airbrush (such as myself), you'll love the results.

CHUGLOGAL:
Thankx 4 the link to your pics there. Now is it just the pic, or did you paint the rotor too? I thought your not supposed to ver paint that?
Either way, I ended up getting some hi-temp paint for the brakes, and did the fronts. Its a funky blue color. They look ok. It was getting too cold to do the back breaks - the can says it should be atleast 50-degrees when your doing it - I;m pretty sure it wasn't.
I'll take a few pics tommorrow.

More info...
If you spent $24,000 on your car, whats the big deal about spending $50 for caliper paint? (this is if you are going to paint them)
Painting them was EASY.
Jack Up the car.
Remove the wheel. (If you do one wheel at a time only premix enough paint to do 1 caliper, Folia Tec paint dries fast)
clean with a wire brush and the included brake cleaner.
Mask off the areas you don't want to paint with masking tape.
Paint away. One thin coat, wait 10 min, put on second coat. This second coat makes it look like a nice thick glossy layer of plastic is on the caliper.
Put wheel back on and repeat 3X.
Let dry overnight.
Everyone has had good things to say about it!

I know this is offtopic but since it was mentionied i figured I would ask because im dumb.
What are 4-pot brakes? I have absolutly no idea what the meaning of that is except they are replacements you can get for your car.
Thanks
Bryan

Yo
The brkae caliper consists of 2 parts: the part which contains the pistons and the part the holds the pads. I only painted the part the holds the pads. I think it looks nicer that painting the whole caliper; it gives it a slight accent. I went to PepBoys and got the hi-temp brake caliper specific paint. I've had it for 1.5+ months now and no fading.
4 Pots basically stand for 4 piston calipers. The factory setup contain 2 piston on the front and 1 piston on the rear. 4 pots mean that the brake caliper contains 4 piston ( good ) and some are 6 pots which is 6 piston ( even better ) but more expensive as you get more pistons. :D

I did this just this weekend and it turned out great. The paint only cost like 5 bucks and I put like 4 coats of paint on it to get a deep enough red. I will put up some pics of it later if I get a chance.
