Pop up gauge pod?
Do ya'll think there is enough room under the factory clock
for a row of gauges...? if so, how about a pop up gauge pod,
you know .. push down on it and it pops up into place like a
factory pod! push it back down for a clean dash!!!
just wondering! tailout

sounds like a cool idea... hide them when you're "sleeping" the cars around you!

Wait, that's not a car... Its a TRANSFORMER!
I like the idea! We should work on a pop-up spoiler too...

I dont think theres enough room for a pop up deal.
maybe if you sacrificed the AC vents, or moved/modified them somehow.

if you wanted them to pop up, i dont think there is enough room to have the top of them lay flush with the rest of the dash. however, if you had the gauge section raised slightly higher then the rest of the dash - kind of how it is with just the clock - then i think you might be able to get it to work. good idea.

Already working on it. Not analogue gauges though, a couple nice features (temp, compass, gear?) all in a pop up display. The JDM WRX had the option for a pop up NAV (I think it pops up?!, if its fixed its way to big!)
I'll post pic's... and maybe prices... when I'm done. I have room for a couple more functions, any Ideas. I'm toying with putting a mileage calculator in there too.
Oh ya... BTW Patent Pending!

this can be done, kind of!
OK, I like the way you think. Here is a way to definitely get it to work but I'm not sure if you want the gauges this far away from the driver!
1. Take out the passenger airbag and housing.
2. Create your gauge housing with the stock airbag top cover as the top of the housing (lining it up with the dash as if it were stock)
3. You can easily rig a motor with a switch and grooved tracks to lower and raise the gauges, even at an angle to where the front opens up higher than then back and therefore has an angle to it sloping towards the defrosters...
I thought about doing this with my GSR when I had it. I'm sure it can be done if you don't mind sacrificing your passenger (just make sure you completely remove the airbag assembly, nothing worse than getting into a wreck and the gauges shooting at your passenger around 600 mph!):D :D

What would be cool is a guage pod that rises out of the dash when it sensed that you were in race mode. Much like the spoiler on a Porsche Carrera. Now that would be cool!
Another idea would an "electornic" gauge pack that could be integrated into a portable LCD panel used by a NAV or (dare I say it) DVD system. That would be cool too.

i know this sounds insane, but I had a dream about that just last night...but not with push down, pop up...mine was motorized w/a hidden button.
Awesome...somebody work it! :monkey:

PS...yes I dream about my car often, it's both pathetic and sad. At least I can stop dreaming about that guy's white turbo eclipse w/the loud BOV...got one of my own now :)

What you need is to put the housing in a rased hump where the clock is. Then it has an oil tempature gauge. When the motor is ready to be revved(oil is proper tempature) it pops up.
This way you know when you can push it.

You guys sound like you've had too much James Bond or Knight Rider re-runs....:D
Maybe you could press a button, and a missle bay will pop out, which is automatically shot at a police officer when the car detects a radar gun....

Temperature based....
Wow -
If you had it set to pop up on oil temp, maybe you could just use one of those pop-out turkey thermometers - a lot less wiring!

Hmm... Actually, I'd love a pop-up (or, drop-down from the ceiling) radar detector... as soon as you drop below 25 or so, it goes away, so when the officer comes to your door, there is no radar detector. ;-)
Of course, I don't have a radar detector, and haven't been pulled over for speeding in several years (crosses fingers) But it'd be neat, anyways.

seriously though, i want someone to pursue this.. i want some serious gauges popin out of wherever as long as its quasi-easy to install from an interior damage point of view. Gota have the boost, egt, maf, etc. This is for the true sleeper, which is what i'm goin for... hell if you can make a place for blitz's onboard chassis dyno then we are really making some way.
gimme :)

I have also thought about this idea. Blitz makes some electronic gauges that are an inch thick. They are similar to the defi gauges. These would work really well. You just need a door like the RS that pops up on top of the dash. It would be kinda difficult to have it work well and look nice. Motorized would look cool but is just another thing to break I think a damped out spring unit would do just fine. Press a button and it slowly pops up, then to close just push it down till it clicks.
Here are the blitz gauges:

Pop up Nav system
I 'd like to know if we could get the pop up NAV system. Then have it programmed to show boost, oil and temp as an option.

You know, with these gauges you might be able to make something fold into itself to take up less room. Just a thought..

Rather than a "pop up" gauge pod, I would be more interested in a "low profile" gauge pod that would be inset somewhat like the clock but contain the three typical gauges (boost / oil / volts). If such an item exists, I would buy in a heartbeat. The thing I don't like about the gauge pods that are out there now is they draw too much focus.

great ideas guys...
don't be swayed by other's synicalism as they are just thinking "in the box"
you'll accomplish good things with your creativity - which will eventually show as i'm sure already has in some cases.
by the way - those above pictured gages or equivalent, with a triangle pop/fold down mechanism like the small compact travel clocks, with motion similiar to "push door to eject" tape decks could be a good starting point. it may or may not effect air duct clearance which can also, be easily dealt with (with multiple solutions pending work/intent).
post some replies of ongoing or completed projects as there are never too many ideas to pass around...

Cynicism even??? :p Sorry, I couldn't resist. As long as we're thinking "outside the box", how about a detachable face plate that allowed us to pull our electronic gauges off if we know we're parking in a seedy area of town? I've heard of lots of people that have had gauges jacked. Just a thought.

I have contacted my subaru dealer's parts guy and after some coaxing (he didn't want to have to do my footwork) I convinced him to track down the part for me. He's going to find out how to get the mechanical drive and lid for the pop-up nav system. Then I can fabricate the pod housing inside.
I'll let you know what I find out.

I had been trying to fabricate something like this as well. I just do not see enough room under the clock for the gauges to fit. Good luck.

If you look at the center console where the CD player is supposed to be there is a screen there. I know you want a pop up one but this may help. May be just another option. I have seen where there are touch screens this size. (Toyota Priza) on it.
In the case of the Priza the screen has Electrical output(Hybrid) and gas engine output, GPS, Radio/CD control all on a touch screen in the center of the dash

i have recently fabricated a new gauge pod for my wrx, it sits about 1.25" above factory clock height. it took me about 6hr worth of time and it turned out sweet. its constructed of mdf and fiberglass and is not square and boxy like the factory gauge pod. tthis pod has very smooth lines and follows the contour of the gauges, which are apexi. any gauge could be fit in the pod. ill try to post pics tommorow or saturday. oh the finish is done with texture coat an factory match paint.:alien:
