anyone put in floor lights?
I was wondering if anyone has installed lighting under the dash or seats to illuminate the foot wells in the car (front and back preferable). I did this in my old Neon and was a nice touch. I'm wondering/hoping if there is anything else that connects to the dome light short of running through the headliner.
thx

I dont know if this will help, but, personally, I just put two blue dancing lights just above where I rest my feet. One on the driver side and one on the passanger. It's bright enoguh to notice, so, I'm happy with that. Dont know if this will help though?

TaiChih,
Looks pretty cool, but how'd you hook it up? I'd like to do something that *looks* like it was factory and comes on with the dome light when i open the door. Want to avoid a separate switch. I suppose I could probably tap into the same switch in the door....
It seems there's got to be a better way...

I want to do this too. I have a 2002WRX and the Fuse Box is located right where your left knee would sit while your seated. I pull it open but it just acts like a small tray, I don't see the fuses, I guess I should look in the owners manual, huh?
Well if they are there I would tap into the fuse for the interior lighting if there is one. That way when you do open the car door, they would turn on as you would like.

Pull out that tray, the fuses are behind it.

Not to flame but just out of genuine curiousity... is there really a need to see your feet or pedals in the dark?

I've installed 8" blue neon lights under my front seats and it looks cool friends are asking me to install it for them and I earn abit from it....
any how u just need neon lights and maybe a switch for on off....and u just connect it to the cig stocket or just connect it to the ACC wire at ur head unit~~
took me about 2 hours to do them all...
its not hard

I've done that mod!
It's cool. Of course I had it installed at car stereo shop out of fear of shorting my car. I requested two green neon tubes. Their roughly 16' in length. They fit nicely underneath the dash board. I can turn them off and on by a switch installed on the dashboad. Where the factory alarm LED is located.
It's quite easy, actually. On my GC8, behind the centre console there is a lighting harness. It is a light dimming harness that lights up your OEM stereo. Since I have an aftermaket stereo, there is no need for it. If I can remember correctly, it's a white wire with a yellow thin line and a yellow wire with a blue or green thin line. I don't know if the WRX wiring is the same as the GC8. If such harness is not available on the WRX, you can always tap current from another interior lighting source. I would check your car's wiring diagram before proceeding. I also installed LEDs on the air vents. I used the same switch from the neon tubes. To this date, I've gotten compliments from the lights. :D

well that was odd to see one of my threads resurrected from nearly a year ago. never did this. still thinking about it, just isn't all that important to me any more.
to answer some of the old questions, i don't want it on all the time, just when the doors are open or when the dome light is on. just was nice getting in the car at night or being able to see stuff that fell on the floor.

What you could do is tap into a power like the cig. lighter and then for the lights to turn on when the doors are open tap into the switch for the door so when the door opens the lights turn on.

would you need to tap into the illumination and brightness controll circuit in the fuse box or which one would you need to tap into. also i just checkign it out there are a bunch of emtpy fuses that you could use for this like fuses 10, 20, and 21 are all emtpy what would you need to do to get them to turn on with the doors openeing and the fuse for the cig lighter is fuse pane; 4

I'm still trying to figure this out myself.
I'm probably going to get some 6 or 8" blue neons and put them under the dash in front of both seats or beneath both seats. I know I can use the cigarette lighter to power everything, but I'd rather just wire stuff in myself.
If I used the factory fuse box, how would I go about tapping into a certain fuse in order to have the lights on only when the headlights are on? I don't want them on all the time, and ideally I'd be able to switch them on and off.
Can anyone help?

cool. i put in 2pairs of 9inch streetglow neon-blues in my 02wrx. they look waay cool. :D not sure if i got ripped off, but they were about $55 for the pair or about $110 for the set. i tapped into the fuse that says "rear washer" or something on the bottom row. it is a switched 12v. i fabricated a rocker
switch with LED and placed it in one of the dummy switches
next to the cruise control (farthest right). one of the 2 transformers for the tubes is located right behind the lower duct
for the a/c and the other trans is inside the centerconsole.lots
of room inside there.
i placed the tubes under the front dash (driver and passenger)
and under the front seats zip tied to the front and back legs
closest to the center console.
you probably dont want to wire it up to the domelights because
the tubes require a few seconds to come on when cold...some
times up to about 7-8 seconds.
i wired up a blue LED (matching color) to the dome light to illuminate the ignition key. this is a very cool touch. :p it
goes off with the domelight's delay circuit.
im planning to wireup another blue LED to the center console
to illuminate the area right under the cigarette lighter socket.
i usually put my phone and stuff there. i hope to wire it up
to the headlight switch so that it will only come on when the
headlights are on. will keep u posted which fuse or where
i tap into.
sorry no picts.

How would I wire the lights into that circuit? I mean, what tools/parts are needed to do it? What would I need to buy? I know how to mount the lights and stuff, I just don't know how to wire them... can anyone give me the basic run-through on how to do this?
As dumb as it sounds, at one point I had the + line from the neon's transformer-thingy tapped into the 12V + turn-on indicator wire going to my amplifier, and the - line was tapped into the -Ground wire going to the amp. I don't think that was a good idea. Besides, I want to put neons in the cabin in my car, so that further complicates things :/
I don't know anything about electrical systems, so that's why I'm asking.

its real easy...
if you have the pin-outs to the radio, you can
tap the switched +12v going to it. otherwise,
what you can do is either get a "Littlefuse
Add a Circuit" fuse jumper circuit adder thingies
at any auto parts store or just wrap the
wire onto the leg of one of the switched fuses (use the
rear window wiper fuse, i think that was
what it was called)and tap it into the fuse box that way... you
will need to cut the fuse/coin holder to give it
additional clearance if you decide to go with
the 'add a circuit' thingie. the transformers use
very little power for the neon's so you dont need
to use heavy wiring at all... i just used some 18awg,
i think. for ground, just use a solid screw or bolt
on the firewall that you know is grounded to the
chassis of the car.
in the future when you tap a larger circuit of 10A or more,
you'll want to find a switched 12v above the fuse
box to slide a female terminal into (there are optional
relays there for heated seats, etc. or feed a main
power line to the battery and use a relay. the above way
to tap is a quick way to tap into power for small things
and not recommended for power thirsty amps and stuff.

128d- yah, so can i...but those cheaps ones are different hue from the streetglow's. next time, compare it back to back. they dont have a clean diffused color. its like getting a walmart 9007 vs piaa. those cheap ones dont last that long either. considering
the amount of work to get it installed clean, get the right ones...but that's just my opinion. :D
drboy01- i fabricated a rocker switch to fit into one of the dummy switch covers. here's how i wired it, nothing tricky about it:
for + go: rear wiper fuse -> switch -> neon trans
for - go: ground -> neon trans
btw, i wired up a cool blue LED to light up with the interior
illumination lights (comes on when headlights are on). use the
fuse called 'illumination' 10A located on the right side of the
ignition 15A fuse. (farthest right red fuse 2nd from bottom row).
forgot to check whether it works with the dimmer...probably does.
:p you can fit a 18awg wire into the fuse holder no problem with one of the fuse legs.
the add-a-circuit might be a little clumsy if you dont like trimming
the fuse/coin cover. just try it without it first. if you're anal,
get a in-line fuse for the neon trans....probably wont need it
though unless you incorrectly wire the + and -...even so, you're
probably ok, just wont light up.

can those cathode tubes handle automotive interior temperatures? if so, go for it! :D actually though, you dont
want the floor lights to be too bright because it gets pretty
annoying when you wear lighter colored shoes..it glares pretty
bad. might want to put a diffuser or something over it.

How hot does your interior get? I think these CCT can handle overclock cases that can reach 60-80 C! Its basically running of the 12v power from the PC's PSU and converts from the included inverter to power up the CCTs. should be a simple plug n' play setup - just choose a location and color! I got some now that I'm gonna try over the weekend and try to take some pics...should be sweet though!

-40C to 85C and operation from atleast -40C to 65C.
so if your computer's reaching 80C and the cathodes are okay,
go for it. :D

I've done this mod a couple times. I have a 2000 rs and I wired two neon tubes, each attached to the underside of my front seats. I found electrical conduit holders at lowes that are plastic and they fit perfect around the tubes and are held in place by one screw. There is plenty of spots under the seats to attach them or if you don't want to screw them just use black wire ties. I ran my wiring under and up into my center console where I removed the single "change" holder by the e-brake. Then I just shaved off the nub inside to make it a perfect rectangle and I popped in a black rocker switch. Looks factory. I'll have to attach a pic when I get them developed. Anyway I tapped into one of my accessory wires from my side mirror switch, that way they will shut off if I forget they are on.
The second time I did this I wired two neons in my trunk. The first is mounted using the same holders, between my rear speakers underneath the rear deck. The second tube is right underneath the trunk latch. I don't haul anything so it wont get smashed. Then I just tapped into a constant power wire I found by the speakers (blue with red stripe) and mounted a black toggle switch just to the left of my jack door. Then if I need to fix the switch for some reason I can access it easily. Just remember to turn that one off since it's a constant hot. Makes a good amount of light.
Like I said I'll post pics if you want.

After driving in my father-in-laws brand new Mercedes Benz, I was thinking of doing this. In the Benz, they are on whenever the headlights are on - just like the dash lights. It's such a soft light that it's not distracting to the driver. It's good for women too because my wife usually sticks her purse right next to her feet.
I'm just shocked that not a single person has posted pics! This is deserving of a tutorial at Scooby Mods.com

I thought it was a bit "ricey" too (for lack of a better word) until I saw it in the new Mercedes Benz E500. Then for some reason it was valid. :) But the color of the light in the Benz matched the interior dash lumination perfectly. So it'd have to be green. I'm not sure if LEDs, neon or what would be the best match.
