Are JDM v7 STi seats really narrower than JDM v8 STi seats? Looking for proof...

I have heard here and there that JDM v7 STi seats are narrower than JDM v8 STi seats, but I'm not so sure anyone can prove this, they are just repeating what they have heard.
I am wondering, once and for all, if anyone can tell me for sure that JDM v7 STi seats are in fact tighter fitting than JDM v8 STi seats.
If you have had real world experience with both of these, please let me know, thanks a ton.
Bryan

JDM seats are going to be narrower than any USDM seats. I have a set of JDM Ver7 seats, and they fit like a glove. Never seen JDM Ver8 seats so I can't compare JDM to JDM

v7 are narrower than v8 but i have no proof--i did sit in both--send an email to jdm in texas--i believe they have both forsale and can measure them for you
| ChristopherG | 06-29-2006 12:51 PM |
Whatever you choose, just remember that any JDM seat is going to fit tighter than the USDM seats :)

i already own JDM v8 seats and they are very nice, just trying to decide if i should switch to JDM v7 seats instead because i'd like narrower if possible.
also for any v7 seat owners, did you do the drivers side height adjustment mod? from what i read it sounds more involved to do it properly than on the v8 seats? the height adjustment is also important to me.
thanks,
bryan

Another member on the boards informed me that the JDMs are about two inches narrower than the USDM.

we know that americans are fat, therefore get wider seats...
BUT the OP is comparing JDM to JDM seats here. version7 vs. version8

I've owned both V7 and V8. I don't have measurements but the V7 are indeed narrower than V8. The leg bolstering is comparable but the sides fit much tighter on the V7.

UK/JDM STI 7 seats are MUCH Narrower than USDM STI 8 and 9 seats.
I know this for a fact as i have one.. Here

Switch them just for the fact that your car is technically a Ver 7, you know keep it more authentic.

I JUST installed v7 seats in my car and swapped the bases so I have height adjustment on both sides . It took me a total of about 2 hours to swap and put in the car . The seats are a nice tight fit . I like them much more than the torinos I had in the car before .

I have REAL edm LEFT hand drive ver.7 seats from an 02 sti from italy and compared to my friends jdm ver.8 seats they are a lot narrower... by the way, swapping seat bottoms doesn't work right as the seat cusion is right hand drive for the jdm ver.7 and when you attach it to the left drive usdm seat bottom the center of the cushion buldges up. I know this from experience...ver.8 seats can simply swap seat bottoms and have both sides height adjustable.

i heard that the swap is not so simple either... on the v8 the jdm and us cushions and bases are shaped the same so they interface correctly even when you flip flop them and use the jdm cushion with the us base.
this is not the case with the v7 where the shape of the cushin and base are different on the jdm vs. the usdm and wont swap so easily. someone said they got a lhd edm cushion which fixed all of his problems but i'm not so sure what was involved there or how much it cost.
blah... i want narrower but i want height adjustment too!

I just left my V7 seats as-is. The fixed height on LH side (our driver) is not too high or low for me. You might just try it out.

I've owned both and the V7 is narrower than V8, not much, but it is noticeable and could make the difference in fit for someone my size. For me, I know it is a much better fit. I'm 5'6 135 lbs.
The side bolsters are narrower on the V7, but the leg bolsters are slightly more open. On the V8 my legs felt crunched and my wallet was always digging into my leg.
Heightwise, the V7 sits about 1/2 or 3/4 inch. This is just right for me also, I'm at a comfortable height, and I can fit in with a helmet to autox. The V8 was a little high.
This really should be in a sticky somewhere. I find and post in these comparison threads by random and very few people probably have firsthand knowledge.

damn i wanna get v7s
| D Money | 06-30-2006 01:41 PM |
The v7 seat utalizes the same base as a stock wrx seat. If you look, it's the exact same thing. You can take your stock wrx seat, swap the bases and it ends up taking somewhere around an hour, I am sure it's nothing too complicated for you. When I swapped my v8's I needed 04 bases, which I took off my usdm sti seats. Either way, I know for sure the v7's are tighter, but they don't form around you like the v8's did in my opinion, I loved them. Too bad I got rid of them before putting them in the car.
EDIT: I just started to research and it looks like it might not be that simple with the v7's!

YES, JDM V7 seats are narrower than JDM V8s. I know coz my friend ended up getting JDM V8s since he couldn't fit on my V7s. And I've also tried them myself, JDM V8s have a wider side bolsters than my JDM V7s .
| wrxsubaruwrx | 06-30-2006 11:01 PM |
Like I said before...around 2 hours (could do it in 1 now) from start to finish . Swapping the base from jdm to usdm is no big deal . I think the only catch is that you need the 02-03 usdm bases for the v7 seats .

lame old guy question here...
do any of the jdm sti (v7,v8) seats have srs? does the srs work with the usdm srs wiring?

| wrxsubaruwrx | 07-01-2006 07:29 AM |
No srs . You either get the airbag light on in the cluster,or you can put a 3.3 ohm resistor in the plug (what I did) .
| italy wrx | 07-01-2006 12:03 PM |
wrxsubaruwrx, you can clearly see that the center of your drivers seat is pushed up when compared to the passenger seat.. The only other way to do ver.7 seats right is to purchase a left drive ver.7 lower seat cushion which costs 450-500 for the cushion alone. The left side usdm lower seat frame is the same as the ver.7, but your trying to attach a right drive seat cushion to the left side seat bottom. The cushion looks completly different and doesnt attach the same way, thats why the center is pushed up.
| wrxsubaruwrx | 07-01-2006 12:28 PM |
Oh well works for me

eh i dunno, i ended up having an opportunity to sit in v7 seats and they feel pretty close to v8 seats, IMO. i have no hard data but it definitely wasnt a big enough difference to make the change for me. i think the v8 seats look better, and the overall feel sure seemed similar to me.

Nice thread...had to bring it back.
For those with v7 or v8 seats, would you say it's a worthwhile upgrade over the usdm STi seats? I'm tired of falling out of mine. Trying to decide between some jdms or evo IX recaro's.

i have the v7's and it is a definate worthwhile upgrade to me --better side boltering than us versions--but if i had to chose i would definately go with the recaro's

Last year, I had a chance at a meet to sit in v7 & v8 (both JDM) pretty much back to back.
the v7's are noticeably 'tighter'.
the thing to consider w/ the jdm v7's is that they are now 4+ years old, used seats.
at some point, they will either need work on the covers & cushions or no longer be worthwhile.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I figured this was useful information that should be somewhere. This thread already has useful information and brings up a problem that I fixed in a very easy fashion not yet described.
I got JDM v7s to replace USDM 05 WRX. The bases are completely different, but the mount locations are exactly the same. To solve the non-adjustable driver side height issue, I took the rails off and ran them to a local machine shop, where he welded the JDM rails to his bench to ensure correct angles, then cut out the max amount of the back bottom bracket and reweleded it back stronger than stock. The height is now perfect.
With this solution and the airbag resistor fix, I now rate this seat swap as one of the best bang for buck mods to any US Subie. My favorite mod.

Having owned both V8 in my old Spec-C and V7 in my current JDM STI, the V7 are narrower.
I was told that once the V8 was sold in America etc, to cut down on production costs of making two width seats, they just made the one size fits all. Hence why the V8 are wider.
