Arrrgh... my windshield got smashed!

Was on the freeway trying to merge and this huge crap coming from underneath a Civic (size of an apple) came flying towards my car (the Civic was one lane to the right of me) and smashed my car so damn hard it sounded like the whole damn thing cracked... freakin sucks  .
Anyone know how much an OEM windshield will cost me installed from the dealership for my STI?

sorry to hear that man.about the price of the windshield you might want to ask subiegal about that and for the installation i dont know how much they charge in your area.

u might wanna consider aftermarket glass if price is a concern
i think its like $200-300installed
OEM one should be around $500-600 if i remember right

I wasn't sure if aftermarket was possible since the rear view mirror is attached to the windshield. I guess it is. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow to see what the quote is. Arrrrrgh I'm still upset  :furious: .

it only cost me $100 through insurance. i'd check into it.

Call your insurance company. Mine was free.
| Mulder | 09-27-2006 06:03 AM |
The glass shop can remove the rear view mirror mount and glue it to the new window, it's a standard operation they do all the time.
As long as you don't have the embedded heater element for the wipers the glass should not be that expensive and there is no reason you have to go to a dealer for it.
Definitely check with your insurance to see if it's covered, many policies do include full glass coverage. You might want to ask about any future consequences of making the claim though, it can affect your rates later on.

r u a cop or somthing? what with the LED thing in fron there?
| sizzflair | 09-27-2006 09:17 AM |
^haha good observation yea are you? if so, maybe the civic was running from you and threw something out the window
| Vew | 09-27-2006 10:02 AM |
I think he would have pulled his ass over if he was. Anyways, the $200-300 estimation is correct unless you have a heater element. Any automotive glass place can do it. It costs a lil more than say a Toyota because the molding on the Subaru has to be replaced. My sister's Outback got a huge crack like last month, so all this is still fresh in my memory.

can a cop pull someone over with an unmarked car? isn't that illegal?
| hornyturbo | 09-27-2006 10:35 AM |
yes they can still pull u over
| jlitch | 09-27-2006 11:07 AM |
maybe its one of those emergency light flashers that changes stop lights. not exactly legal if you're not a firetruck or cop.
| brain juice | 09-27-2006 11:36 AM |
I'm guessing camera
| rkramer | 09-27-2006 11:41 AM |
most likely volunteer fire fighter or EMT. in some states they can have lights to get to their truck/ambulance quicker.

WTF kind of question is that??? Have you ever driven on public roads? Don't tell me you've never seen an unmarked car with someone pulled over.

I used Safelite (www.safelite.com) when I needed to replace my windshield on my WRX wagon, cost about $250 and they drove out to my office to install it. I would expect the STi to be similar. They'll work with your insurance company, too.

Just called them and the price came out to around $300 including installation and the moldings. Not too bad... just hope the quality is good and don't have any problems with their installation.
Thank ya'll for the help!

Yeah, Safelite seems to have a good warranty and the tech who did my install did a good job and was very quick. Definitely a lot cheaper than going OEM.
The glass is definitely not OEM, but works just fine. Would have liked to get one with a tint strip along the top, but wasn't an option.
Just be sure wait as long as possible after the windshield is installed before driving the car to let the adhesive cure and be sure to check with your insurance company to double check your glass coverage.

Their install is quick and very good. And i also have the black dot on top so it looks like the OEM windshield. The good thing about saflite they use the special glue that after 1 hour you can already drive or wash your car.

Good to know... they are coming next Wednesday morning to fix it and I need to drive my car that same day late afternoon.
I called my insurance and I have a $1000 deductible so its useless (reason being because I am only 22). $300 for a new windshield installed at my house is a pretty good deal I think. I tinted a visor frame on my OEM windshield before so I'll probably have to redo that.

nope, i've never seen a unmarked cop car pull someone over. I've seen some pretty stealth (black) police cars but they still had police decals and thin LED strip strobe lights on top.

Are you even suppose to pull over when you see a private car with those stupid lights on? I usually ignore them...
| austinpike | 09-28-2006 10:44 AM |
If you are using non-OEM glass, make sure it has the screened tint thing above the mirror. (If you care about having it there, anyway.) Glass from pre-05 will fit, but won't have the tint.

Which is a good idea.... If its a real police unit, They will have a marked unit stop you if you do not stop. Just make sure to explain you felt unsafe stopping.
You can have lights in your car as long as its for show only and can not be turned on while the vehical is moving.
Those look like the newer code 3 light set up. I hope you have a permit to have those. Some PD's let the detective units use their own cars. Which might be the case.
The lights that trigger the stop lights are like a strobing blacklight. They work 65-70% of the time. Otherwords, Dont trust your life or anyone elses speeding up to make a light with it on.

LOL... ever hear of FTY (failure to yield?).... better yet, ever hear of "Felony Stop...." ? It's the part where they take you out of your vehicle at gunpoint, you get cuffed.... THEN they sort out who you are and why you decided to ignore the code three lights in your rearview mirror.... You won't even be able to tell an unmarked behind you with emergency lights/strobes and takedown/spotlights on... so that arguement doesn't hold much merit.
Emergency lights are NOT a suggestion to pull to the right.... don't care what the six o'clock news says. You may be able to justify your hesitation, just be prepared to deal with the repercussions....

If you can't tell for sure if the car following you is a cop or not, the suggested plan of action is to call 911 on your cell phone with your location so they can verify the situation. While on the phone, look for a well-lit public place to pull over.

Although this IS the most logical thing to do, I'm sure it would go over real well if it was a real cop. "Ah, hold on officer I'm just making sure with the 911 dispatcher that you are indeed a police officer!" "Step out of the car son..."

In addition to this, I think most departments that have unmarked cars just use whatever model their regular cruiser is (Crown Vic, Impala, etc.), just without light bars or decals. Some use undercover cars, like this (Mustang, in this case).
