Atlanta ProSolo Pictures part 1

Atlanta ProSolo Pictures
So Dad got some pictures of the event. Mostly just Phil, Ron, and I, with a few of Corey too. All of the pictures of me in the car are from Sunday morning, so they're excellent examples of how NOT to drive...

Me behind in the slalom.

Me braking when I should have been accelerating because I wasn't looking far enough ahead, so was offline and going the wrong speed.

Me "busy" being safety steward. Hey, at least I'm watching the course! :disco: That woman next to me must just be stalking me. ;) I find it amusing that Mom and I have basically the exact same stance. Hands on hips, "beotch pose". :D

I should have someone take video of me going around an autocross. I wonder how many times i lift my rear tires.

What's with the front camber here? Seems like its going in the wrong direction...or am I a doofus?

Corey 04-20-2005 11:14 AM

Thanks for the pics... and hey, it was OK to be behind on that slolom as it was only a 3 cone and the reward for staying ahead was a bad line out of it... I kept seeing people walk it like a typical slolom and thought "what are these people thinking?" Same goes for the entrance on the right side... going up the hill before the slolom, people were going SOOOOO wide... why?

Oh well, to each his own.

Suspension all whacked out as Phil went over those bumps on the left side before the slalom.

Nice in-focus picture of Phil braking in the left-side slalom.

Race kaaa all decked out (except Dad cut off part of the front SoloRacer.com magnet, sorry Brett. :().
As we took off all the magnets, Mom sounded all wistful, "the car looks so bare and ordinary now!"

Flicky, with the tremendous amount of elevation changes and that being an off-banked corner, I don't think the inside front tire was going as much positive camber as it would have on flat ground. We were running with approximately -3.5 degrees of static front camber.

Corey, good point about the setup for the right-hander after that slalom. Dad didn't catch that part of the course in the shot, so I had forgotten that I really WAS set up for the following corner. :)

If you want full-res shots, let me know. But well, a couple of those are already at their full-res, and I just cropped them down so that your car was larger than a spec. :D

Yep, I'm a doofus.
I've seen similar stuff at autocrosses by me, just never to that degree. I really need to see myself driving from another's perspective.
wrx2.0 555 04-20-2005 01:01 PM

Jenn.... (it was Jenn wasnt it---I'm bad with names :) )

I noticed the camber on the car and actually made a comment to Phil about not running much camber when he told me it was -3.5...

I would have that double checked...Comparing mine (which I do myself with a Smart Camber Gauge) and Tom's, we are both at approx -3 and your car doesnt look close to that at all.
One of my buddy's that stopped by actually made a similiar comment about your car with no prompt from me.
I just dont think its a coincidence and I think you should have it checked.
I also noticed the camber plates werent even close to full negative--so I wonder how you could acheive -3.5 given the range of the camber bolt and so little adjustment up top.

I may be completely wrong here---but wanted to offer my observations just in case..

Scott
PhilC 04-20-2005 01:21 PM

We compared to Tom's after looking at how much more he appeared to have than us on Friday when he had on his Rotas, and we were dead even to Tom (using a plumb bob and tape measure to measure so take it with a grain of salt). 1 and about 1/16" difference top to bottom on a 17" wheel, pretty close to 3.5 degrees, actually a touch more than that call it ~3.58 degrees.

Everyone standing around and looking at the two cars said the same thing, "Tom has at LEAST a degree more camber than you do and you both think you have 3.5 so something is wrong." so we measured and despite what it looked like they were dead even within the limits of our measuring methods (couldn't find a SmartCamber Friday evening, gotta buy me one of those). I think it's something about the wheel's design that make it look like less camber, when Tom had on his Enkei wheels he looked almost identical to us except for that wacky positive camber he was running in the rear. Shop got it to -2.3 on both sides with the factory eccentrics with the JIC camber plates set at 0 (which is not the same 0 you'd get from stock tophats), for the event we went in a touch over 1 degree. After talking with Tom, taking some ride height measurements and getting the car home we went up about 5/16" in ride height on the front which should help our camber curves. Also found that the spring perches on the passenger side front had slipped loose and dropped down about 4 turns at some point which could very well explain the nasty rubbing we were getting on left hand turns from the right front.
jcroy66 04-20-2005 01:24 PM

Hi Scott. Yep, it's Jen. :) And I'm awful with names. As evidenced by the fact that I introduced myself to you twice.

As for the camber, we didn't measure it exactly although we did do "dangling string" measurements vs Tom's car in paddock. :D. It was set to -2.5 and zero toe at the alignment shop for street use. I thought my "mechanic" (Phil) had gone full negative (or relatively close) for the event, but I wasn't there when he set them (I think I was looking for a post office to mail our taxes  ) and I honestly didn't even look later on either. So I'll let him speak to how he set them. We will be buying one of the "pimp" Smart Camber gauges eventually, I just have been lazy and haven't gotten around to ordering one yet. I suppose I should do that soon.

Edit: I was slow; Phil beat me to it...
PhilC 04-20-2005 01:43 PM

At any rate we'll be doing a test and tune this weekend and playing with things a lot and probably getting it realigned on a rack at some point after that. Tire wear seemed to show that we were pretty close to where we needed to be front and rear, didn't have or use a pyrometer for this event to check temps. Tire wear showed us one thing though, 6/32nds probably isn't enough shaving to make an MX perform optimally, we got some very minor chunking at the edges of tread blocks both front and rear indicating to me that they still have some tread squirm at 6/32nds. I think next time we'll go with shaving to 4/32nds. I could be totally mis-reading what the tires are telling me though since I'm way behind on my learning curve and I've got a lot left to learn.
trhoppe 04-20-2005 01:51 PM

Well I did a camber measurement with a real gauge in the paddock later friday and we were -3.25 per side.

-Tom
wrx2.0 555 04-20-2005 01:55 PM

Same here with the learning curve. :)

My MX's were full tread--more or less--just a few events and road mileage on them.
I realize that immediately puts me at a deficit, but I didn't care--I was taking that into consideration. I just drove bad. My second set of runs Saturday was not too bad, but I screwed up Sunday and actually gained a second on each course. :( Really screwed myself and dropped back down in placement accordingly :(

I will keep pushing and get plenty of seat time---locals and Divisonals---and just might come out to Topeka for the hell of it...I want the experience...

Considering we were using a tie down strap as a plumb bob and we weren't on level ground our half-ass camber measurements were awfully close then. Kind of surprised actually at how well you can jury rig up something that will work and just won't be terribly accurate.

No love for Stompy? I didn't get any pictures from the Pro since I was either in the car or adjusting air pressure the whole time...
PhilC 04-20-2005 05:50 PM

Sorry Joel, basically we handed the camera to Jen's dad, set it to shutter priority and 6MP resolution and said "make sure you get pictures of us" We ended up with a lot of pictures of trees and the sky.
jcroy66 04-20-2005 06:51 PM

Yeah, very sorry Joel. :( Even when I was STANDING by them, saying "get some pictures of Corey and Billy" and pointing out their cars, they still didn't get any at all of Billy. Dad told me later "I got pictures of that silver car and the white car you wanted me to". I'm like "white car??" Turns out he got several pictures of Andy Hollis instead. :)

Anyway, so yeah, I was having a hard enough time getting any pictures at all, so after awhile, I kinda gave up. I was just lucky he got any of ME. I was in grid Sunday morning (after my 2 minute warning) when my parents walked up. I asked "can you get some pictures of me?" and my dad has this super blank "huh?" look like that hadn't even occurred to him... :p

And I never took any pictures myself for basically the same reason you didn't - I was either in grid, running, in impound with L2, in grid with STX, working, or hanging out in impound with STX. I realized after the weekend was over that I didn't think to ask Dad to get a single picture of any of our local folks that made the trek down there. Oops.

But Corey, Mom did specifically ask about you Sunday morning. "How are Corey and our other buddies from dinner last night doing?" "Well, Corey is out there right now, that car that I'm TRYING to get Dad to take a picture of!"
DrBiggly 04-20-2005 08:56 PM

No love for my car either eh? :p

I didn't take many at the Tour last weekend because I was too busy. I only took photos when I wasn't running. Hopefully next time I'll get more shots. :)

Here's a cool series of pics from the Atlanta Tour... I do believe this is Joel's codriver, Tommy Pulliam, on Saturday's course heading across the bumps.
