Sequential Shift Light part 1

CitySubie 06-27-2005 03:19 PM

Sequential Shift Light
This is the lights in bright bright day light. The sun was above and slightly behind me

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wOTgyNzI5NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg

The first light is set for 4000rpm and the last red light is for 5500rpm
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wOTgyNzMxNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg

No night time picture. To bright for my camera phone. And not really willing to keep the rpm's up long enough for the camera to adjust to the light.
waktasz 06-27-2005 03:21 PM

So how did you do it? Make another setup for me and I'll pay you handsomely for it :)
mno 06-27-2005 03:58 PM

Very cool.

How bout' a write up.
makanai 06-27-2005 06:37 PM

That is awesome. I'd love one of those almost as much as an LCD gear indicator. Nice mod.
CitySubie 06-27-2005 07:48 PM

My car is a bit load, but my music is louder. So a shift light helps when tight NYC traffic is involved.

Plus it's easier to keep my eyes on the road and use my periferal vison. It's safer.
dolfinator22 06-27-2005 07:56 PM

thats pretty sick
Jonnyfilmboy 06-28-2005 11:10 AM

How did you do the wiring?
CitySubie 06-28-2005 11:42 AM

Three wire harness behind the gauge cluster. The one on the right side has a green wire with a stripe. That's for the TACH. The power and ground is anywhere you want it from. I used the cigerette socket for power and had a wire from driver side "B" pillar (where the seatbelt is) that I used as a ground previously for an amp.
WShade 06-28-2005 11:54 AM

That is so nice. Wish you had some video. F1 style :D
Fubawu 06-28-2005 12:28 PM

You could have a market for that!
John
subi_2.5rs 06-28-2005 12:53 PM

please give us a write up.....that some neat **** you got there.....
siperwrx 06-28-2005 01:04 PM

I want one.....now.
drain bramage 06-28-2005 01:24 PM

  thats hot (hotter than j-lo) nice work
Rallycarperson 06-28-2005 01:38 PM

Nice. I had to look twice to see what you were talking about...and thats a good thing. ;)

Gonna have to be pretty damn handsome
makanai 06-28-2005 05:01 PM
Gonna have to be pretty damn handsome
Well, I don't know about handsome, but if doing more than one will help lower the price, count me in. That's a sweet mod, but there's no way I'd be able to figure out how to do it on my own.
LYHTSPD 06-28-2005 05:10 PM

I would like to see a schematic on how you did this. I like how low key the leds are.
subieworx 06-28-2005 08:05 PM

Why would you set the last light at 5500?
garie 06-28-2005 08:19 PM

pretty cool. now make the lights move around and the sound that kit makes in knight rider. now that would be waaaaay cooler :)

sweet project!!
CitySubie 06-29-2005 03:39 PM
Why would you set the last light at 5500?
I set the red light for 5500rpm because 5600-5700 is where power drops off, no?

It can always be changed to anything else. But at 5500, I let the red go off then shift. I guess to compensate for my reaction time.
willguidry 06-29-2005 03:47 PM

He's driving an RS.

That's why the red is 5.5k

Nice work, now show us how to do it please.
tasq 06-29-2005 04:06 PM

+1 was this a premade shift light? or did you normal LEDs and the tach wire? Please explain!!!!!
IronMonkeyL255 06-29-2005 04:09 PM

That is pretty sweet.

It'd be cool to do one on the edge of the gauge shroud, facing the driver.
makanai 06-29-2005 04:48 PM
That is pretty sweet.

That'd be tight as glass.

I think I'm in love with this mod.
dome 06-29-2005 04:55 PM

Great mod. Nice and subtle and very functional.

Any chance of hooking a fellow NYer up? :D

If not, looking forward to a write-up as well. Nice work.
04RCSTI 06-29-2005 05:08 PM

very nice mod, welldone.
MrH00nel2 06-29-2005 05:35 PM
Why would you set the last light at 5500?
is it not pointless to drive past 6k on a wrx?? unless its worthy modded.
02BlueSuperRoo 06-29-2005 06:01 PM

yeah going over 6k in a wrx is kinda a waste of fuel.

I have this adjustable unit mounted right by my vin plate and it works great

http://thedynoshop.net/shift_light.htm

p.s. I didn't take it in the 455 for $99 like they have it listed, i only paid $45

That's not too shabby, but I like the cleanliness of the install on this thread. I guess you could take one of those units apart and dremel out holes for the LEDs. Maybe? Any pics of your mount 02Blue?
CitySubie 06-29-2005 07:36 PM
is it not pointless to drive past 6k on a wrx?? unless its worthy modded.
I have the RS
02BlueSuperRoo 06-30-2005 02:40 AM

I'm a fan of this setup as well. How much did it cost? How adjustable is it?
siperwrx 06-30-2005 11:23 AM

Hwere did you get the red/blue LED's, it looks like its only green where you ordered it from. And PLEASE, how did you mount it without the little box?
CitySubie 06-30-2005 01:06 PM

I don't want to get anyones' hopes up high. It was specially made. Let me see if it can be done again before anything else is said.
tasq 06-30-2005 01:07 PM

The question now, of course, is specially made by you, or specially made by someone who might be bribed into either specially making a couple of more, or at least throwing some Subie fanatics a bone and giving us an idea how we might repeat the design?

In either event, I'm still giving you much props just for having it in your car. Great mod.
WShade 06-30-2005 06:27 PM

02BlueSuperRoo

If it is not too much trouble, what are the exact dimensions of the unit you are running?
02BlueSuperRoo 06-30-2005 07:01 PM

Here's the scoop guys:

Here are the dimensions and specs on the product
http://www.tekniqauto.com/US/tsport/rev_specs.htm

The reason I paid less was because I think the company that makes them was bought out and the new company raised the prices. I got mine off ebay but a quick search there shows no results now.

Here is what is looks like. Fist one is with flash not in operation. Second one is no flash and I turned the thumbwheel down so it came on at a low RPM so you could see what it looks like when its in operation. It is wired into the green tach wire on the back of the cluster.

Someone pm'ed me. My responce was that I will give him all the details because it was custom made. I don't want to get hopes up high.

When I get all the info, I will share the wealth with all of you.
Balabok 07-01-2005 02:17 PM

I think that's a good deal for $99. I've seen TRD-Scion and Sparco units going for more than $300.00!

Here's some more light kits.

Yeah, not bad for $99, but I'd much rather get it for $45. :)
Handsdown 07-01-2005 07:01 PM

so can you adjust the RPM, and did you put a switch in it in order to be able to turn it off? i can't stand bright stuff that's always on, so i'd have to have a switch to turn it off.
makanai 07-02-2005 11:40 AM
so can you adjust the RPM, and did you put a switch in it in order to be able to turn it off? i can't stand bright stuff that's always on, so i'd have to have a switch to turn it off.
From the add it looks like you can use the thumb wheel to adjust the RPM up to 12000. If that's the case, you could probably just spin it up to a higher RPM and it would never come on. At least, that's what I'm guessing.
Handsdown 07-02-2005 05:57 PM

i was more asking about the original poster's setup, since his looks more custom.
MB38 07-02-2005 07:21 PM

The coolest thing I've seen is one where the LEDs were integrated into the tachometer [a la M3] at the X500 RPM marks [where there are no numbers].

At 6,000 RPM, the light by 1,500 RPM would light up. By 7,000 RPM, the 2,500, 3,500, 4,500, 5,500 and 6,500 RPM lights would light up, lighting the final LED just before the car reaches redline... calling for a shift.
02BlueSuperRoo 07-04-2005 12:55 PM

I think part of the point (for me at least) was to not be looking at the tach and still know exactly what RPM I was at. I can see my unit without taking my eyes off the road and an added advantage to the placement/size of the rev-lite is that none of the passengers can see it unless they make an extra effort to do so.
