Attn: Gary Sheehan -- Best of...Team SMR
Gary:

I know you're busy getting ready for your next event, but lots of us are dying for some of your awesome videos. Studying your lines and reactions and pedal work is more helpful than some driving schools I've attended. :D

So, just a friendly reminder for ya! Produce those bad boys on video CD or DVD or even just .mpg or .wmv on a data CD, and sell 'em to all of us fans.

We'll buy it, I promise!

Good luck out there,

Scott
GarySheehan 09-16-2003 11:25 PM

OK, the reason they are not out yet is because I'm having a hard time compressing the video down to fit on CD. I'm almost to the point of buying a DVD burner just for this.

I have a 7.5G file that I'd like to get down to 650M with decent quality at 720x480. It's not working out too well. I'm using Sonic Foundry Video Factory and it doesn't use a WMV9 encoder. Movie Maker 2 does use it, but it is crashing every time I load the file! DIVX almost works OK, but turns out choppy every second or so.

Do you guys want to settle for a bit lower resolution? Or help me with a solution?

Added bonus hint: never, Never, NEVER stack your new 200G hard drive on your subwoofer. You would think a guy with an elecrical engineer degree would know better. The end result is I lost a lot of video data, including the driver-cam from California Speedway.

sdecker 09-17-2003 06:52 AM

Gary:

Are you attempting to make a single file so that it fits on a data CD? Or, by way of comparison, are you trying to create either a video CD (VCD) or DVD playable in standalone players?

Last question -- are you stuck on .wmv format, or would you consider another one?

Let me know -- I'll do what I can to help. I have been down this road more times than I can remember.

Scott
GarySheehan 09-17-2003 11:12 AM

Scott,

At first I wanted to create just a data CD, but I was having so much trouble with WMV and DIVX that I decided to buy the Mainconcept 1 & 2 plugin for VidFactory so I could make an SVCD. The quality came out so poor that I'm upset I spent the cash!

Late last night I attempted to use DIVX one more time without customizing any settings. It brought the file size WAY down and the quality is still OK. I'll be tweeking it a bit to see if I can increase quality a little, but it's really pretty good right now.

Where should I send it? :) I'd like to get your feedback.

Gary -- check your PM's.

After using seemingly every product out there (including the incredibly complex and *expensive* Adobe Premiere), I have found that certain programs work better than others, depending upon what you want to do.

TMPG is great for converting raw .AVI files from your camera to MPEG-1 (for VCD) or MPEG-2 (for DVD/SVCD). However, it has no editing capabilities at all, so you'll need something else if you want to add titles, fades, etc.

I have had good luck with Pinnacle Studio 8, DVDit Pro, and Adobe Premiere depending upon what I'm trying to create.

As a shortcut, you might consider purchasing one of the better quality capture solutions that do MPEG encoding in real time as you capture it. These things save a TON of time since your source .AVI file does not have to be converted in software.

Basically, it just takes a lot of patience and experimentation, as I suspect you have already found out.

retail box with authoring software
and good reviews all around
4x media can be had for ~$1.25 each

Im planning to pick it up for burning track video DVDs as well.
sdecker 09-17-2003 12:30 PM

Boy, I wish those were around when I paid 400 bucks for my Pioneer a couple of years ago...

I got started on all this when I decided to transfer my old wedding video onto permanent media. VCD quality sucked IMHO and SVCD was not yet a standard, so it was DVD or nothing. I must say that I was very pleased with DVD format once I finally figured out how to get everything done. It showed every flaw the original VCR tape had. :D

Skyline 09-18-2003 12:18 AM

I've had lots of good luck using DivX Pro 5.x and VirtualDub for MPEG2. In my case, I edited 60 minutes/9GB of video down to 45 minutes/730MB at 640x480 and a bit rate of 1.975 mbps. Shockingly, using the DivX pre-processing and psychovisual filters actually improved the quality over the original. Weird!

Can't wait to see your video, whatever the format. :D
GarySheehan 09-18-2003 12:19 PM

I've got it done and the first copy is going to Scott (sdecker) to get a review from him. He's the Beta test!

I actually tweaked DIVX a bit more and got a nice 650MB video at really good quality. About as much quality that can be stuffed onto a CD.

Stay tuned.

You know, two of my favorite videos are Climb Dance and any of Gary's videos.

Now if we could only get some Speed TV coverage of the USTCC.

sdecker: Have you tried AVID Xpress DV? The original version (for PC) wasn't all that hot IMO, but 2.0 and 3.0 are really quite nice for a good NLE; I find it far more preferrable to Adobe Premiere. For a nice simple NLE Media100 isn't bad; it's really easy to pick up.

The nice thing about AVID Xpress DV is that it looks and acts very much like all of their higher end products so you can upgrade as your needs increase.

Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro are also easy to work with, although I prefer the GUI of the AVID Xpress DV over FCP.

That aside, where can I find some of these videos that you guys are raving about? :)
GarySheehan 09-22-2003 02:16 AM

Having difficulty with the video on slower machines. Works fine on my 1.7GHz machine, but really choppy on my 800MHz machine. I'm considering just moving up to DVD and solving all the problems. Would there still be interest if these were DVD's at $10 shipped?

Yes, absolutely. And, for what it's worth, that's the same issue that I had that originally forced me to go the same route. Computers =

Just in-car footage of the full race. No datacam.

This first release will be just out the front window, since my harddrive ate the raw footage of the driver cam. All future releases will have a through the windshield camera, driver camera and perhaps a footbox camer.

DVD burner is on the way, along with plenty of media. I plan on burning my first video to DVD this weekend. I'll still be sending the first copy to sdecker for review to report back here on quality.

We're getting there!

sdecker 10-02-2003 03:03 PM

Gary -- that explains why the CD never came. :D

I'll review the DVD and let you know. What sort of burner did you end up with? Be aware you will get greater compatibility by using DVD-R media than you will with either of the '+' versions. While many newer DVD players are supporting DVD+R/+RW, tons and tons of existing ones don't. Just a little heads up for ya. Nothing wrong with the '+' variants, it's just that there aren't as many out there in terms of standalone DVD players. DVD drives in computers are probably 50/50 at this point. Annoying, huh? It's kind of hard to figure out how you want to author stuff.

Most people just author DVD-R and take their chances.

Sorry -- I guess I should've posted earlier on this. :o

You could use the +R media for backups and stuff like that...and you will probably have people asking for +R media anyway. No biggie, but I'll need -R to review it for you. (See?)

Actually the difference is less than 10%http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=DVD%20Media%20Format%20Compatibility%20Tests&Series=0"
and from what I have heard, a lot of newer DVD players only play +

So hang on to your + media, but get some - media too. If it doesnt work on someones player, just send them the other kind.

OK!

The first DVD is going out to sdecker on Wednesday, 10/15/03, for his review. Hopefully he will give it two thumbs up.

I am just about ready to go into production with it. It is Round 4 - California Speedway. The video is a dual feed out the front windshield and on the driver. I think it came out pretty good, but I'm a DVD newbie, so anything I make might look good to me. It's optimized to run on stand-alone DVD players that will play DVD-R media. Otherwise, it should run fine on PC based DVD players.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Sweet! I'll be looking forward to it. A full write up will follow.

Scott
sdecker 10-17-2003 06:23 PM

OK, the DVD gets a big thumbs up on several fronts!

PACKAGING: Nicely done. The DVD has a professional looking color label on the front, clearly indicating what this DVD contains. It's not the cheesy crap you buy off E-bay either. It looks very very nice.

VIDEO: Excellent! Nice wide-screen format. The split screen driver/windshield view was excellent. Even my (9 year old) son commented on how cool it was to be able to see the steering inputs and how they related to what was happening on track. I have no complaints with the video quality when watched in full screen on my 21" computer monitor. (I will attempt to watch it on the big screen tonight. :D )

AUDIO: The audio quality is outstanding. I could clearly hear when your tires started to give up the ghost at about halfway through the race. You fought them hard but by three-quarters of the way through they were DONE. Engine sounds are great but I found the tire noise most impressive. I can capture engine sounds in my videos too, but the subtle traction stuff I can't do. Nice work!

TECHNICAL: Again, excellent. The cameras were nice and steady throughout. The video editing was nicely done, even including a handy menu on the front of the disc. I had no problems at all playing it on PowerDVD 4.0 on my computer. All menu items worked as they should have. It's not Speed Channel in-car quality, but then again Gary doesn't have that kind of budget. In my opinion, you couldn't ask for a better learning tool than this, short of a full time instructor in your car. All the elements are there if you know what to look for.

MISCELLANEOUS: The trailer after the cool down lap was excellent. I thought it was going to be boring at first (you know, standard cool down lap), but honestly I thought the video captured your emotions very well, Gary. On a different note, I also caught your emotions regarding a couple of cars. Did you speak to the guy driving the silver CRX afterwards, and how about the *other* one?

AS A LEARNING TOOL: Absolutely outstanding. Just what I was looking for. I'm telling you people that unless you are already at Gary's level then you have something to learn here. Braking under bumps, quick transition moves, passing, late braking, varying apexes according to track conditions, it's pretty much all there. If you are an aspiring road racer like me, you *NEED* to watch this. There is an extraordinary amount of feedback to be gained if you keep an open mind to what you are seeing.

BUSINESS: Very classy inclusion of your major sponsors. They are 'front and center' throughout, but amazingly, they fade into the background when the action gets good. As soon as the action fades back, BAM -- there the sponsors are again. I can't imagine a much better scenario.

OVERALL RATING: Totally off the hook! I'm not really a '10 out of 10' kind of guy, so I'll give this a 9.5. If Gary chooses to sell this, you should buy it! Sign me up for the other rounds, Gary.

TWO BIG ASS THUMBS UP!!!

Scott
GarySheehan 10-17-2003 07:55 PM

Wow! Thanks for the review, Scott! I guess that $100 payoff did the trick...

One thing that Scott didn't mention is that all of my driving errors are out in plain view for everyone to see. I was dealing with understeer that would occasionally snap into unexpected oversteer. Also, what is not evident is that the ambient temp that day was up around 105F. I think it gives a pretty good perspective of what's involved in a 30 minute sprint race from start to finish.

Anyway, the DVD's for California Speedway are ready to go. If you want one, email me at [emailprotected]. I'll fill you in on the details.

In the meantime, I'll be updating my website to include the DVD's. I'm hoping to have Pay-Pal linked into the site fairly soon.

I finally got a chance to sit down and watch the entire DVD. Great race! I really love hearing the sounds of the TeamSMR WRX. The sound and video quality are really excellent.

Two thumbs up! Anyone who hasn't gotten this yet...get it! It comes nicely packaged too. :D

I can't wait till you get the "pedal cam" installed so we can see some foot action.

Thanks Gary!
