Tommi Makinen to drive NASCAR???

No Joke.
I heard on Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain, that Tommi is looking into a possible NASCAR sponsorship.
I might have to start watching it if he really does do it.
Does that mean I gotta chew Skoal and drink watery beer?

Wierd.
Perhaps we will see Tommi and Colin battle it out once more.

He'll really have to change his driving strategy to have to turn only one way now and all...

McCrash would be more fun to see in there. Nothing like mixing up a wirey Scot and some rednecks. Can't understand either of them, so it's a perfect fit.

Seen "The Rundown"? There's a scotsman in that movie that was hilarious. Reminded me a lot of McCrae. I think I found it a lot funnier because of that. And the scotsman would be more fun in CRASHCAR racing. I wonder how long it would take him to get into a nice fistfight with another driver? We scots have a fiery temper.

What's more interesting is that on one of the Nascar shows earlier this week they mentioned that one of the current single car teams had made an agreement with a group in England to feild a second car next year with a British driver....

if either of them go, don't forget to send them pace note to all the tracks:
Left...Left...left...left....
except when they go to Watkins Glen and Sonoma:
Follow dat greasy black strip down middul of the track....ya otta be just fine... anythun else and you're on yer own. ya hear.
  j/k of course
I would love to see the rally boys show them good ole boys a thing or two. I'm rootin' for Colin when he dukes it out with Tony Stewart.

That's what I was going to say....
Left 5 into Left 5......Left 5 into Left 5
It always cracks me up to hear Nascar announcers describe ovals as turns 1,2,3,4, and sometimes even 5
Like it's a spectacular difference on any of them
lol
that would be a classic matchup though, the crazy Scot and the flying Finn......

Wow. Now this makes for interesting news! Could any of us have thought this possible a year ago? Hardly! Truth is stranger than fiction. I'm really curious to see how it all turns out. :)
| XT6Wagon | 10-18-2003 01:35 AM |
Um, yes Oval tracks have more than 2 corners. The Tri-ovals can have 5 w/o a problem.
Just as on a roadcourse what looks like a long 180 turn can actualy be 2 corners connected by a ultra short straight. It LOOKS like one, but should be driven like its two different corners.
And frankly I'd be amazed if he wasn't a backmarker for atleast a year.

Yeah, NASCAR is weird. Someone used to the straightforward technology used in the WRC is going to spend a long time learning the backward ways of the good ol' boys. And, just like in WRC, local knowledge counts for a lot - Tommi and Colin have never seen ANY of these tracks before.

There were some "spy" photos that leaked out of Colin in S. Carolina doing testing with one of the Winston, er, Nextel Cup teams.
Here he is on his way to one of the cars:

It depends on the driver. McRae likes his pace notes read as the proper gear.

oo i c. well i guess it would differ here in the us with no recce, and the premade notes.

Well every driver in NASCAR does have a co-driver.. but he just sits up on the trailer instead of in the car. Still radios many moves back to the driver, especially letting him know he's clear in the pass to pull back in line.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's with Toyotas new NASCAR entry next year with the Camry.

Speed coverage of WRC

I too missed the 2-hour Corsica segment on Sunday. But it looks like Speed is scheduled to have a 1-hour recap this Thursday at 10 pm and again on Friday at 5 pm.
Go to http://www.speedtv.com/schedule and use the "Search by Program" function. Set "Use Calendar Date" to "No" to view all dates, not just today. Set Category to "Auto Racing" and enter "FIA WORLD RALLY" for the keyword. That should allow you to easily view the upcoming rallye schedule on Speed.

I think everybody gets a sort of "initiation" when they first get into the winston (nextel, whatever) cup series.
It would be a sad commentary though, if they permanently made a non-southern white guy not welcome. We'll have to see. I'm pretty optomistic about human nature. :)

I was actually watching some NASCAR show the other week and one of the commentators actually got a ride with tommi on one of the WRC stages. The commentator was totally impressed. He said it was the most exciting motorsports experience he has ever had. And this coming from an ex-nascara driver too, i beleive. the in car camera showed the commentator watching tommi's feet a lot. he showed mucho respect to tommi. these nascar guys aren't ignorant, despite the drawl! he was giddy like a little kid. it was a very cool crossover moment. kinda like montoya in the nascar car a few months back.

One category, two types of people:
Guy standing on outside of turn, wearing poncho, waiting on rally car to slide by and sling mud all over him.
Guy standing in front of perfectly good seat, for 3 hours, watching cars go in a circle, splashing beer all over everyone around him as he celebrates the fact that the cars just passed by him, again.

they ALL get put into the wall at one time or another, especially rookies. as said earlier, Fittipaldi really should have started in ARCA or Busch or something - Winston/Nextel cup is not a good place to learn.
