depends on the class you want to run in. Check the motorsports forum.
Davenow 02-14-2005 06:26 PM

Do not post these questions in the motor forum.
Trunk_Monkey 02-14-2005 06:28 PM

If you havent already read this. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174189

Introduce yourself in you local forum and find out where the locals autox and try and get into the circle.
rickeolis 02-14-2005 06:31 PM

That's real good Dave, let's just run everyone off this site why don't you...

Benjis, Yeah there is a site in this forum called Motorsports where there are tons of guys who run AX ready to share knowledge! TTYL-

That's a pretty broad question. There are lots of people here that autocross. And most hope to or try to have their prepped to the full extent of the class they run.

wide open and sideways
Yes. A alot. In the garage. I'm in Somerset MA

Wide open and sideways at an auto-x will get you kicked out. Just letting you know so when you get to an event, you don't have super high expectations of what it is.

You need to ask less 'general' questions and ask more pointed and direct questions to get any help here. 1st, please search. There's a thread at the top of the Motorsports forum here that goes over many issues we've had over the years.

We can help you with rules (See aformentioned thread for link to the official SCCA rules). Fr local events... post in your local forum. Local events are hardly posted in here... more of the national events are in here.

In addition to the Cincinnati Region SCCA club that TyrannoSullyRex posted, there is also the Cincinnati Sports Car Club. Their website is http://cincyautox.org/.

This thread has the worst grammar.
benjis jun 02-15-2005 11:55 PM

thanks. i know where all of this stuff is so ill check it out. didnt think i would get criticized for putting down wide open and sideways. just a quote.
anti.team 02-16-2005 06:20 AM

Quotes usually have these "" around them.
Keyboards also usually have keys on them with this label: SHIFT

Anyway enjoy autocrossing! It's a ton of fun. And this motorsports forum here is one of the best resources on the internet for information on it (even if you don't drive a Subaru). People around here are very knowledgeable about the sport and there are even some national champs around whose brains you can pick. Just remember to have fun out there.

You sure? In North Carolina, wide open and sideways in an STI gets you a standing ovation from the crowd
speedyHAM 02-16-2005 05:14 PM

Standing ovation- or everyone stands up so they can start running when you come their way?

Unfortunately for the guy in the port-a-john, he just couldn't see it coming.
benjis jun 02-16-2005 11:59 PM

its not a big deal. drive how you want. i do and dont care how others see me. but be safe. thanks again and i will stay on this board seems very helpful.

The answer is: It depends. It depends upon the context and how it's done. If you were running at 10/10ths and got a touch off the line and into some grit and got off-angle coming around a sweeper in a controlled fashion, that's one thing.

Someone stopping in the middle of the course and doing donuts is another thing entirely.

And an attitude like THAT will pretty much assure that you will get kicked out if you drive "wide open and sideways". And you'll be told not to return.

There's something you need to know about autocross events. The SCCA has a program called "Solo Safety Stewards" (and most independent autocross clubs have a similar program). The safety stewards make sure that the event is run in a safe manner and that no one is endangering the continued safety of an event. Basically, a safety steward is "god" at an autocross. If a safety steward tells you to stop doing something, YOU STOP. You don't argue. You don't say "I'll drive how I want and don't care how others see me". No. You stop. And if they tell you to get out, then you better get out. Immediately.

A number of the people on this board are safety stewards. We're telling you now, BEFORE you go to an autocross, that driving "wide open and sideways" will NOT be tolerated.

benjis jun 02-17-2005 04:37 PM

ok. thanks again. words are taken out of context too much here. i also said to be safe on how you do it. i dont plan on being wide open and sideways. i would have said that. just a quote. oh " ". forgot those gods.

dave bruener 02-17-2005 05:44 PM

I took "wide open and sideways" to be a reference to the way a rally car goes around a corner and since this is a Subaru site, I thought it appropriate.
I saw it as a statement about a philosophy of life, not specific to a technique of driving and certainly not something to get bent out of shape about.
People get a little touchy about stuff sometimes.

Go to an autocross and have a ball!!! That is what recreation is all about...
DwithBoost 02-17-2005 06:00 PM

Yeah, definitely agree with dave bruener. I know Ben personally and it's only a quote. Although some times we do get wide open and sideways in the snow or in the dirt just having fun. He doesn't plan on driving that way in the middle of an SCCA competition  Some of the members on this forum need to take it easy on the newbies and stop taking everything so seriously. It may sound like he's a little bit of a loose cannon but in reality he just feels that people have their own style.
jcroy66 02-18-2005 07:22 AM

Folks, it's not just about "saying a neat quote". I ignored the original quote; it was when he said he will drive like he wants to and "doesn't care how others see him" that I pointed out that that will get him kicked out of autocross. I know I'm kinda a "safety nazi" at times, but I think anyone who knows me also knows that I won't hassle people unless it's justified.

Tyranno (gently) let Benji know that "wide open and sideways" wasn't the fast way around a course. Benji basically told Tyranno off for that ("thanks but I know what driving is"). KC then informed him (gently) that "wide open and sideways" wasn't allowed at autocross. To which Benji stated that "it wasn't a big deal, drive how you want".

I think I was probably the harshest responder on this thread (boy, I love being the evil one! ), and I only responded after no less than 2 answers by Benji blowing off people who tried to actually help him out. As well, a number of us actually ANSWERED his question and didn't get any sort of thanks in return. (For those who haven't noticed, I actually answered the guy's original question in an earlier post.)

So yeah, I'm gonna be a tad pissy when this guy continues to insist that he's gonna do things his way and no one's gonna tell him any differently. People who actually act out attitudes like that could land us in a position without insurance and without lots. Do any of us want that??
benjis jun 02-18-2005 09:13 AM

okay. i see how it does look. i said thank you repeatedly as i remember. anyways this post should stop it doesnt even pertain to my orginal question. also for the record j crom. i did say be safe though, on that line you like to put down so often. i drive how i want-i do-but safely. lets put that in there too. not just what you want. THANKS AGAIN for all the help.
