AutoX Classification

Alright, preparing for the AutoX Season!
I'm in the process of trying to figure out what class I would be in.
My setup will be:
07 STi
Stock Wheels
Stock Tires - RE070's
Invidia N1 Race Exhaust
Invidia V3 Catless Downpipe
Cobb Accessport Stage 2 Map
What class would this place me in?

Pretty sure that would put you into BSP because of the catless downpipe and Stage 2. Someone else might want to confirm.

Street mod.
If the ap didnt change your boost mapping then youd be in STU.

I agree, you'd be in SM
| Scooby South | 03-19-2007 09:29 PM |
your choice....
BSP due to the tune and the Catless DP...
Or...
SM....because people like to throw people into this class as catchall...
Or....
FP....More Mods amongst other things....
All classes considered...would require R' compounds to be competitive...period..
if its just for fun...choose wisely...who knows....you might end up with a trophy...:D
Negative....Catless DP not allowed in STu...
As long as he has a cat in the system (not sure about the particular exhaust mentioned), catless downpipes are allowed in STU, but the boost changes from the re-tune aren't allowed.
BSP or SM. I would pick BSP for New England Region SCCA events for the sole reason (well 3 reasons) being: Mark Daddio, Chris Travis, Nelson Antunes are all in SM here. :) Then again, running against/with them you can learn A LOT.
If it's not SCCA, pick BSP anyways because it has a softer index (what other clubs use with combined classes to determine final time).

Depending on your area it would be a toss up between SM and BSP as to what you would rather run. As they've said, both classes allow R-comps so there will be some very fast cars out there. Go out and have some fun with it.

sorry KC..you are correct....you must have a cat in the system...:)
but usually a newb will get a complete Catless exhaust which limits his choices...

Yep, your right. I just went through the 2007 scca rules pdf.
SP rules dont really say anything about cats. It only mentions exhaust manifolds and o2 sensors...I totally believe you guys when you say catless is allowed but is it specifically in the rules anywhere??

Although if im running Stage 2 Cobb Accessport maps, my boost has been altered and higher than stock. Therefore, don't I fall into Street Mod?
Yep, your right. I just went through the 2007 scca rules pdf.
No, he isn't. You *can* run a catless downpipe, AS LONG AS there is a cat SOMEWHERE in the exhaust system (see below).
Please stop the proliferation of misinformation.
SP rules dont really say anything about cats. It only mentions exhaust manifolds and o2 sensors...I totally believe you guys when you say catless is allowed but is it specifically in the rules anywhere??
See Below.
In STX, there's this:
High flow catalytic converters are allowed, but must attach within six inches of the original unit. Multiple catalytic converters may be replaced by a single unit. The inlet of the single replacement converter may be located no further downstream than 6" along the piping flow path from the original exit of the final OE converter.
WHich means you can go from multiple cats down to one and that one can be a highflow cat.
STU rules state:
STU follows the STX rule set, but raises the displacement....{snip}
Which means that STU follows STX rules with a few more allowances.
So, in STX and STU, you can go down to one cat, and it can be a highflow cat. Note that STS and STS2 must run stock Cat-Cons.
For Street Prepared:
Emission control devices may be modified or removed. This permits the oil filler cap to be modified or substituted, but does not allow valve covers or cam covers to be altered to install a breather or for any other purpose.
A cat is an emissions control device. They all can be removed along with other emissions control devices not specifically listed as untouchable (valve covers/cam covers).
On top of that, to reinforce it is:
Exhaust manifolds and muffler systems are free
Which means, you can do whatever you want to the exhaust system (reading on) as long as the exits behind the driver and is relatively quiet.
Hopefully that clears up some of the catalytic converter issues for ST and SP.

1. Get catted DP or short DP and run a cat.
2. Run stock map or get STU map made
3. ?????????
4. Profit
STU is one of the most competitive classes for the STI and you can be competitive locally with very little if any mods.

Dunno what BSP looks like up here yet for this year. The biggest issue will be Steve H... and I was usually within 1 second of his time, in my BS RX8. He sometimes runs SM... so dunno what's on his plate for '07 nor do I know if there are many others in BSP (there are a few).
I still say that BSP would be the best bet to have fun with boost in this neck of the woods, since SM... you'll just simply get crushed by Daddio, and the Travis/Antunes civic.

So I'm registered for the AutoX now.
I got rid of the catless downpipe, and threw on a catted one now.
I should still be able to run Street Prepared BSP correct? I'm doing this event through BMWCCA, so for now I'm registered as "SCCA Class: I".

Switch you map to stock with the AP and run STU as stated by many. When you leave the track switch back to stg 1.

I'm running the Stage 2 map. I honestly dont want to risk getting any CEL's or boost creep issues with the stock map on my turboback. I think i might just stick in BSP for now. Besides this first event is with BMWCCA anyways, and according to them im in Class I for scca.

Yeah, I was going to head up to the SCCA one @ NHIS, but I decided to stick around locally that weekend, and devens is only about 20 minutes away from me. Sold my legacy back in November and this will be my first autocross in the STi, so I'm more out there for learning this season, as opposed to attending every SCCA event for points.

You will be in 1-2 gear. You will not get boost creep. Most people with STU maps tune them to the ragged edge in 1-2-3 gear and the car would ping and pull timing if you even tried 4th gear. That's because you don't drive in 4th gear at an autocross. Just load your stock map and run STU, you will have no problems with the stock map and TBE at an autocross.

+1 Boost is definitely allowed in SP. Also, people should stop saying all he needs is a tune to run stock boost and he'll be in STU - he has a catless downpipe, he CAN'T run in ST* period.

He is now using a catted DP. STU is the most logical class if you are going to run street tires. It is the whole purpose of the class. ST = street tire. OP on street tires. OP has an AP and can easily switch maps.
If he runs SP he is up against guys on 275 or bigger R comps.
If he runs SM he is up against guys on 315 R comps and alot more power.
If he runs STU he is up against guys on similar tires and a few more hp.
All other the top guys in each class have coilovers and such so I didn't include those, but you can be fast on stock suspension in STU.

Silver Arrow... i run the same area that he runs... SM, is tough against Daddio, Travis/Antunes and a new Nissan 240SX that should open some eyes this year. Run SM if you want a real challenge.. because you'll get one.
BSP has been lightly attended and competed on the local level. Same with STU. We do have a quick BMW in STU tho... so he'd welcome a fight. :) Guys runnign STU here do have some decently set up cars.
A novice will pretty much have a fight in almost any class up here... even STU.
It is the whole purpose of the class. ST = street tire.
FWIW, I disagree that street tires are the "whole" purpose of ST. It is one characteristic that is unique to ST, true. Doesn't mean it's the whole purpose, though. And just in case you didn't realize, ST stands for "Street Touring", not "Street Tire".

I understand what it stands for. It is also the only class that mandates street tires. Same car on street tires and R comps are 2 seconds apart on a 60 sec course. Huge difference. If you run a class that allows R comps on streets you aren't going to even know where you are compared to better drivers. Run STU and you will be able to gauge how far off you are and if you can push alittle harder. If you are just going now and again to have fun and learn your car, I doesn't really matter what class you run.
