well crap that was fast. :(
Thanks man.
ok, so now, how the heck does the tire sizing work.
For Example the 16/66-16: Its a 16" tire for a 6-7" rim..but what is the sidewall height?

I think the WRC teams run 15 inch gravel rims.
| Jon Bogert | 08-09-2006 09:44 PM |
The 66 means 66cm diameter, or 26 inches. So 5" sidewalls. The first 16 means 16cm wide tread (not carcass width, like with normal tire sizing).

I know this is off topic but does anyone know which 15in wheels would fit over the 4pots?
I was looking at the SSR Comp-X wheels in 15x7 +42mm but no one could give me a straight answer.
Thanks and sorry in advance.

compomotive/speedlines are the way to go, with some 15" rally tires.

this has been discussed about eleventy million times...
forget trying to import 16" gravel tyres
15" team dynamics wheels ($125 each) fit the WRX if you dont want to spend $300 for one Speedline or Comp wheel

I've been racing on the same set of 16" Michelin Rally Tires for THREE years now. Probably about 25 events. I keep thinking I need to replace them but I keep winning on them so they are staying. Got them from Subiesports. They are expensive at first but they have outlasted everything else I have ever used by at least 2 times so they cost less in the long run. I run them on my OEM rims. They are taller then the stock tires by about an inch so you better not have a lowered car. ;)

66cm or 26" is at the high end of rally tire diameters, and bigger than ideal, unless on a very powerful car.
66 is the total height of the tire in cm, the first 16 is the width in cm, -16 is, of course the wheel diameter in inches.

I agree, almost too big for Rally but an interesting advantage in RallyCross. Our Region trys to follow the 45 mph top end rule, which in most cases means for a WRX you shift to 2nd gear for a second or two. Taller tires make my first gear longer, so I don't have to shift and I don't bounce off the rev limiter as quickly as a guy on 15" tires or stock size 16" tires. Tires have been on their wear bars for the past three RallyCrosses.
I also noticed that it takes a while for these tires to break in. They were pretty squirly in the first few events but got better the more I raced them. First year no wins, 2nd year 3 wins and 6 second place finishes, this year I won 4 of my first 5. My class is almost always the class with the most entries. The majority run Rally tires with a good mix between Kuhmo, Silverstone, Hankook and Michelin. No real difference in the car during this time period.

I am just looking to see if 15x7 +42 would fit over the 4pots. These wouldn't be for any rallies but for racing wheels.
I really don't want to spend that much for compomotives/speedlines and I don't want Team Dynamics wheels.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

what's wrong with TD's?
I suppose if you are only circuit (tarmac) racing there are plenty of lighter, better options, but for gravel, TD's are inexpensive & tough. Otherwise pony up the money for Compos or Speedlines for your gravel use.

I never said anything was wrong with them, I just didn't want them. I was just asking about the size that would fit over 4pots...that was it.

Thanks for all of the information everyone.
I asked because I have a set of 98 Golds, which as everyone knows are pretty damn good wheels. I figure that if I can use em' I might as well.
It sounds like the sidewall may be a bit taller than Id like. Now that I understand the sizing. (Thanks)
Carisma, go to www.rallispec.com under "products" then "wheels"
They have Enkei Gravel wheels that will clear the GprN (4 pots).
They also have a 17x 8.5" forged Tarmac wheel with the correct offset to fit in our cars....id love a set of those!

The inner dish profile of each type of wheel differs. Basically some 15" wheels fit over WRX brakes, some don't.
It's trial and error.
we try to help!

my rallycross tires are old kuhmo's that i got for free for crewing at a clubrally.

Michelin no longer produces 16" gravel tires. some our national rally drivers had to ditch custom made AP gravel brakes, that fit only in 16" rims, because tires were no longer available.

that pic just proves my point that all cars look cool w/rally tires and a bit of dust on them. cars need a healthy diet of vitamin D (as in Dirt)!
i also believe that there arent enough "Pavement Ends" signs in this world.
that has to be a typo for the price of the PRO RALLY 1, 15 X 6-Black-$1161 when the rest are 160ish.

Why dont you want them? no styles you like? for the money they look pretty hard to beat. i think the pro race 1 looks pretty sharp. dont think i would want to use them on anything rougher than a rallyx though.

Or Jason Waples/Todd Moberly in CO. DYnamic Performance. They deal em for cheap. I paid like $110/ea SHIPPED to me last year here in MI(I am sure they are more now tho with the US dollar sinking like a bad turd). THose guys rally & Todd is wicked fast & abuses the crap out of his.
I beat the snot outta mine & never had a problem. The guy I sold the car to is still usin em.
I am buying more soon for the new chassis. They work great. You can buy two for the cost of one Compo or Speedline. Sure they MAY not be quite as strong, but thye sure seemed to be for us and they are very cost effective.
edit- I used 48mm offset & they fit fine over WRX brakes.

Do you have a website or something for Dynamic Performance? The one I found in google didn't work.

I dont believe they have a website.
Dynamic Performance - 152 E Industrial Blvd, Pueblo, 81007 - (719) 647-9192
Jason is the better one to talk to about wheels. Tell him I referred you.
