Short shifter install problem part 1

Short shifter install problem
Ok here's the deal.

I pulled out the stock shifter and trying to put in a short shifter and no matter how hard it bang on the shifter it won't go back in. And I can't get the stock one back in either.

Is there something I'm missing here?

I'm using a block of wood and hammer to try to get it back in.

Thanks

I used a 3/8" socket extention. I ran it through the hole in the shifter, and then into the front area of the console. Now you can push down and it'll pop in pretty easily. Just need lot's of leverage. You need 12" extention.

use a BIG piece of wood, lots of lube, and one of those sand filled mallets.. the trick is to hit the piece of wood 3-4 times really quickly so the ball doesn't pop back out.. and you should be set..

those things are so easy to pull out, but such a pain to put back in. gl

I just beat the hell out of mine with a rubber mallet.

i tried the hammer and wood technique for about 30 minutes with no success, while my buddy was in the garage looking for a rubber mallet. its pretty frustrating huh! once my buddy found the mallet it was two whacks and it popped right in! go find a mallet!

I think the key is a lotta lube, and getting the shifter on there at just the right angle. . . When I put in my Kartboy, I had a helluva time gettin' that sucker in. Puttin' my weight on it (and I'm like 235lbs.). . . wailing away with a mallet. . . no go. Then I think I got the alignment just right, 'cause it popped right in with one whack from my palm.

krazedant 07-30-2003 11:37 AM

I know exactly how you feel rabbit. I have the kartboy short shifter installed in my car and I couldnt get it in for the life of me when I was trying to install it. I think I just kept banging the hell out of it until it finally popped in.
mtbhadfield 07-30-2003 01:21 PM

I was having the same problems... I picked up a mallet that had hard plastic on one side and rubber on the other for $4.99. Best purchase I ever made!

Start by hitting the shifter with the plastic or rubber mallet and if it doesn't go in, move it slightly to another angle and hit it again. It is one of those things where if the shifter is at the wrong angle it won't go in no matter how hard you hit it, and when you finally get it at the right angle you won't believe how easy it slides in.. strange, but that's what happened on mine.

Good luck,

Brian

I have took some risk when I was installing mine.
I got very frustrated when the shifter didn't want to go in after an hour.
I took a cement block and wrapped the top of the shifter with towels and hammered it in in two tries. :D

yeah, i got frustrated with mine too... but i just kept pushin it down and whackin it with the mallet.... and it went in eventually.... lube it up.. and start whackin :D

This should sticky 'cuz so many people have this problem. I have THE solution:

The tendency is to position the lever in the socket so that the top half is perpendicular to the socket (you want to feel like your hitting is straight on) and this makes some sense. However, because the lever is bent, the lower half with the ball is not sitting centered in the socket. I don't know the exact physics, but I know this translates into very little of your force is actually getting where it should. Here's the trick:

You just need a little lube on the ball. Position the lower half of the lever perpendicular to the socket, with the ball perfectly centered in the socket. The top half will be pointed away from the dash, like this:

----------/
dash____|____
________u____

(the "u" is suppposed to be the socket). Now your tendency may be to hit the lever perpendicular to the top half, meaning slightly toward the dash. DON'T. Hit straight down. I just used a small block of wood on top and my hand. I'm probably a little stronger than the average bear but I'm no hulk and I can pop it right in. Trust me on this. If you're pounding the beejeezus out of that thing with a mallet, your angle is probably wrong.

HAHAHAHA...this had me nearly in tears at my desk.

anyway, i couldnt get mine installed either. i tried on two seperate occasions and no deal. i got frustrated and threw the thing in my basement. reading this makes me want to give it another try though.

edit: is it ok to be pounding the crap outta this thing? can it do any harm?

Thats the same thing I did. Used a block of wood and hammer and then gave up and found a rubber mallet and presto...it was done in about 2-3 whacks...

THIS WORKS 10X BETTER THAN HAMMERING IT IN. ROLLEYESLIKECRAZY :)
exhondaguy 07-31-2003 03:16 AM

wrap the top of the SS with a rag or something to make it soft. hold the shifter in place with your left hand and smash the top of it with a brick. 1 hit will make it go in easy.
I am mattjk 07-31-2003 03:48 AM

Ok, Here is a write-up I just did. Don't use a hammer, you could damage the plastic socket and the surrounding metal frame. You will also risk the chance of bending your new short shifter, which is what happened to my MRT unit. I had to remove it and hammer it back until it was returned to it's original state.

First you want to remove the shift knob by unscrewing it. Then open the center console door and pull up on the trim panel.

Unplug the white plug and set the panel aside.

Next you want to remove the shifter trim by pulling up from the back.

Use two 12mm wrenches to remove the nut and bolt.

Now, to remove the stock shifter, all you need to do is push down lightly as shown. It will pop out very easily. Take the excess grease in put it in the plastic socket for use with the new short shifter.

Remove the stock metal sleeve and 2 plastic bushings. Set them aside.

I am mattjk 07-31-2003 03:48 AM

Now, you want to place the new shirt shifter in place. Use the 3/8 extention and place it as shown. Hold the shifter inplace with one hand, and then push the extention down where the arrow is shown. One good shove will pop the shifter into place very easily.
I used a 14" long extention, the longer the extention, the easier it will be to push in.

Now with the new short shifter in place, you can install the 2 plastic bushings, and the metal sleeve.

Install the nut and bolt and tighten.

Once the shifter is installed, you can reinstall the two panels. Don't forget the plug... The finished product :)

but smashing it with a rubber hammer is so much funner...:(

Did mine yesterday, after some research.

Wrapped the rod in a cloth, put my weight onto it...................nothing.

Put a socket on top, whacked that with a hammer. Nothing.

Worked it round and round, pounding with the hammer.

Took a break.

Put the OEM knob (I have the titanium STi) back on, put a cloth around THAT, hit it with the hammer, flat side. Two hits and it was in..

I had to adjust the shifter trim some, and I dont think I got it 100% on there- I can hear the noise now. Have to Dremel some off or borrow a file.
bambams247 08-16-2003 05:00 PM

I got the b&m shifter and had to dremel out the metal trim that is under the plastic. The shoirt shifter made the metal rod (the horizontal one) rub up agains the trim, I had to dremel it out to make it work....anyone else run into this?

RallyOttawa 08-17-2003 03:21 AM

I tried the wood/hammer combo.. no luck. After much work, I put my stock shift knob back on, then took a 20 pound barbell and tapped the top of the knob. Went in smooth as silk the first time!
DasKomet 08-17-2003 09:31 AM

i tried wacking it with a hammer on 2 different occasions...nothing. both times i got fed up and put the stock one back in.

then the third i tried this method, it it went in fine:

I just ordered the Cobb Double adjustable shifter with bushings and tranny mount. Should the install go about the same?

Just installed my Kartboy SS, and this way was the easiest!! I tried beating it with a mallet...no luck, tried using my body weight on it....no luck. Found this thread, and tried this way....took all of 5 seconds (maybe). I couldn't find my 3/8" extension, so I used a long flathead screwdriver.

Thanks Matt:D

The socket extension trick is genius...I tried the mallet and got nothing. Finally popped it in by gripping the shifter and stabbing it in there. Not the most elegant solution, but it worked :D
