Hood blanket looks like crap!

Has anyone attempted to dye their hood blanket? Mine is dirty with water stains and I've tried washing it with soap and water with no luck. I was thinking about using some black spray fabric dye to make it look nice again,... thoughts?
I Figured out a solution using Duplicolor's flat black Fabric Paint, pics on page 2.

Proof?
After a year and 3 months, it's still fine. People have had their's off on Subarus and other cars for over 10 years without anything happening.
I woud imagine the paint would get hotter sitting in the sun for several hours than it would from the motor.

is the purpose of those just to keep the hood from getting super hot?

It's my uderstanding that the blanket is there to snuff out engine fires, should one arise.
| WRblueX_Guy | 10-09-2006 02:29 AM |
The fire blanket thing is a myth, and proven not true.
It's purpose is mainly for sound deadening and it offers some thermal protection to the exterior paint of the hood.

sounds like a winner to me!! I was looking that the first picture wondering what exactly was removed...haha and then I realized it was the thing on the underside of the hood:p

took mine off a couple days ago. gained about 20 hp easy, lol, not really. looks better tho. Nick

just buy an aftermarket hood and you wont have to worry about the hood blanket.
| djerickd | 10-09-2006 09:55 AM |
I think I'll try the spray dye first, it's just a little cheaper

Cheaper then removing it?

Your paint won't flake off. There really isn't that much heat produced by your engine. At least no more then the sun baking it on a hot day. I have never known anyone to have problems with their paint from the heat. I think it's safe to say that you will be fine.

Well here's what I did and it looks 100X better. I took it off and recolored it using Duplicolor fabric coating:

I used flat black, it looks freaking good again.

When I bought my WRX it didn't have it on there, it was an 02 so I don't know how long it was off, but I never had any problems on the paint, and I have it off on my STi now.
| NewSTI | 11-25-2006 03:28 AM |
alright.. all those arguments are nothing...my point is that how do u take it off without breaking those clips ??? :D
btw, any picture of it painted ??? also i would asume that the high heat temp paint would work better than just fabric paint ?

| djerickd | 11-25-2006 03:30 AM |
you dont, I bought all new clips for it
Edit: the high heat paint I assume would sit on top of the fibers instead of getting absorbed making it look like crap. mine looks like it was re-dyed not re-painted

hmm so u use this spray http://duplicolor.com/products/vinyl.html and it works good ??? not fading and doesn't make the engine bay dirty ?

I can't comment on the fading and the makingof the engine bay dirty as I jsut did it tonight. I rubbed the liner and nothing comes off on my hands so I assume it's all good.

Are you worried about how it will react to high temps?

mine is crappy as well but still have it on, peace of mind i suppose

it's not supposed to be pretty. leave it on. it serves a purpose. not everything on your car that has an underlying function is supposed to be pretty.

that looks freaking nice..i should do that too..
btw, have to try to drive it around and make sure the heat doesn't do anything to the paint, and doesn't mess up the engine bay ?
