"Best" driver in the USA part 1

HoRo1 06-20-2003 08:03 PM

"Best" driver in the USA
Of course I mean the best active road racer.
Well, my vote goes to Boris Said.

I couldn't think of any others, but I'm sure that I'm missing at least 1 big name.

Feel free to make a suggestion and I'll add it. (must have been born in the USA - I hope that the 4 I picked all qualify).
AndyRoo 06-20-2003 08:28 PM

danica patrick? just kidding.

thats sad there isnt more.

What kind of driver are we talking about? I mean if you are looking for all around driver I would have to say Robby Gordon, although, Jeff Gordon really impressed me with his F1 car skills. But Robby has proven he can drive Winston Cup cars, he can drive off road trucks, he can drive open wheel cars and rally cars.

Now if you are looking at the best sportscar/gt driver I think Auberlen is the best there. Said is great, but he has been outdone by Auberlen in equal cars in the World Challenge series and Bill has shown he can drive the highest level of sportscar as well when he drove for BMW and Porsche in their ALMS/LeMans cars.

Is Peter Cunningham born in the US? He seems to one of the top road racer right now (or least the ones on TV... :D )

Yup, he used to autox here back in the day. He actually did a local event a few years ago in a EVO4 rally car.
jprowland 06-23-2003 07:34 PM

I voted for Jeff Gordon. NASCAR may not be popular around here, and it may be boring as all get-out watching cars go around and around in a big circle...but all those guys know how to drive, and he most of all.
adhowe70 06-23-2003 10:13 PM

Randy Pobst
Apisatrox 06-24-2003 10:33 AM

Diggings (David Higgins) - not from the USA, but he's in the USA
2002BLUEWRX 06-24-2003 10:53 AM

Auberlen, you see what he does against Said in exactly equal cars? Also he spanked Pobst at Lime Rock in the rain when the BMW is a RWD and the RS6 is AWD. Plus, if you are good enough to get on BMW's payroll you are a damn good driver as they have fewer than 10 contracted touring car drivers worldwide.

True enough on the M3 vs RS 6. In fairness though, the RS 6 has proved itself to be somewhat difficult to drive so far this year. There's no doubt in my mind though that when Auberlen is good to go, he is spectacularly good and better than Pobst.

Jonny Milner's been running some events in the US too, and he's the British rally champion overall. Hard to say who's better, since I haven't seen them drive the same kind of cars. Milner drove a Corolla WRC to win his championship, Higgins only won the Group N championship. Milner's also won WRC events outright. Over here it's reversed, Higgins drives the open class car and wins and Milner is in the GpN (does well whenever he doesn't get DQ'd ;) )

Seems like whoever has the faster car wins. But when Higgins can place 10th overall in a WRC event in a little Group N car, you know he's good.

Then again, there's always Stig Blomqvist and John Buffum...

you gotta love Stig showing these young pretenders how its done. tied for 3rd in GrN this year. not bad for an old man who probably doesn't know what to do with a car with so little hp

oh, and if we're going to include anyone who is racing here regardless of nationality, how about Derek Bell.

If it weren't for NASCAR
I can't believe I voted for a NASCAR driver in this poll. But more and more I'm starting to believe that if it weren't for NASCAR, Jeff Gordon would be the best american road racer and at a par with many of the best in the world. Unfortunately, we'll never know for sure because he makes so much money in NASCAR, that it doesn't make sense for him to try anything else.

Another true road racer to be considered in this poll would be Terry Borcheller. He's been easily the fastest Saleen SR7 driver the past couple of years. Now he's shown that he is probably the fastest Grand-Am driver as well. Too bad he didn't fit in the Panoz last year. We would have had a chance to see how he can do at the highest level of sports cars.

Also, why aren't any of the American CART drivers in this poll? Isn't that where the best American road racers would be if they were good enough?

American drivers like Jimmy Vasser and Ryan Hunter-Reay (is he American?). I think that these are the only 2 regular CART drivers that are American.

Rhys millen.

Tough Choice
I would have to go with Boris Said but, Jeff Gordon does well when he is on a road course ..(which is only a few times a year)...Bryan Herta is a name that gets left out. CART ALMS....versatile but inconsistent.

Peace.
TimStevens 06-25-2003 08:14 AM

Another vote for Jeff G. Maybe if we all chip in a few bucks we can make it "worth his while" to drop NASCAR and get into some form of road or off-road racing? You'd think he'd have enough to retire comfortably by now...
10th Warrior 06-25-2003 11:12 AM

Ron Fellows?
Habu 06-25-2003 01:08 PM

John Buffum.

Doh...

At least I didn't jump on the Paul Tracy or Jacque Villenueve bandwagon. I know they're Canadian.

johnfelstead 06-25-2003 07:59 PM

the only decent American driver i can think of was Mario Andretti, and he was Italian really.

I never really did understand why American drivers suck in international motorsport, considering the size of your country and the wealth there to promote them. Certainly proportionally you dont have a good record, can you think why this is?
adhowe70 06-25-2003 08:09 PM

Its simple, really. Americans can't drive. All you have to do is spend time on our highways to learn that.

Actually, we have so little support for our talent at the entry and mid-levels of development that it never really gets developed. Most of the US money for racing is spent on circle track cars.
dknv 06-25-2003 08:50 PM

Boris Said. If I could vote for a runner up it would be Kevin Harvick.

I was there from Fri-Sun and watched Said's line, and saw how he approached the course, smooth and consistent. He drove in 3 different events, 3 different vehicles, in qualifying and practice sessions for each one of them. The qualifying record he set on Friday for the Cup race speaks for itself. Then watching him come back from back in the pack after pit stops, to finish in 6th was awesome. And I think he didn't push the 01 car as hard as he might have, maybe it was because he was saving himself to run in the Trans-Am race on Sunday, immediately following Winston Cup.

Kevin - similar story. He won the Sat. Featherlite Southwest race, and came in 3rd in Winston Cup. Said came in 2nd in the Featherlite Southwest race, 6th in Winston Cup, 2nd in Trans-Am.
HomerJay 06-25-2003 11:47 PM

Mario Andretti! I think he was the best American race car driver EVAR! ;) Too bad his kid wasn't that great. I think racing in America is in total dissarray and we can't produce good drivers.

(I know he was born in Italy! )

Whoops, I was getting the info off his web page and got confused. His CAR has won several WRC events, at the hands of Didier Auriol.

If you want to go back to Mario Andretti, why not Phil Hill. Okay so he wasnt spectacular but in terms of american drivers he was pretty darn good. And what about Dan Gurney?

These really are not fair comparisons, since they raced in a completely different era. I'm just sort of desperate to come up with a good american driver. Sorry.

who says we suck?
maybe we just prefer to stick to american racing rather than flying all the way over to eurpoe.
Rattler 06-27-2003 06:15 AM

I would say Robby Gordon for overall but you asked "road racer" so I would say Boris.
maybe we just prefer to stick to american racing rather than flying all the way over to eurpoe.
This is pretty much why Robby Gordon turned down Ford's opportunity for a try-out in WRC. Too much travelling. I think he likes his play-time. I like Robby. He is one of my favorite drivers.

He also raced Baja for Toyota. It didn't last long because he couldn't get along with Ivan Stewart I guess. Robby dusted off Ivan's lap record at their practice track on his first day. He got his old Ford Protruck out and then demolished the lap times.

The real estate guy from Lansing, MI, Paul Gentilozzi isn't too shabby either.

I think Robby and Boris would both race Radio Flyers if they could.
