Hella 500 install on MY00 RS
Are there any websites that have a howto install these lamps?

I should have them at my doorstep when I get home from work today, and want to install them tonight.

Any help would be appreciated.

And yes, I checked Scoobymods, they only have the PIA install.

Cheers

Its easy bro. Remove the old lights, fit the Hellas in the opening without the mounting bolts attached, mark a hole for the bolt, mount, wire up.and VIOLA~!!!

Sidewayz, thanks for the input.

My question was more specific. I saw the PIAA hookup on scoobymods, and am NOT going through all the hassle of taking my ENTIRE front end off to replace my fogs. AIN'T gonna happen.

So the 500's will just mount as easy as the OEM fogs?

ATX thanks for the reply. seriously.

Did you not read my original post completely?

Scoobymods doesn't have a 500 install for GC8.

Cheers

sidewayz 12-10-2002 10:58 AM

nah, I left my bumper on...the only thing I did was cut the harness plug off of the old lights and mated it up to the new ones.
willguidry 12-10-2002 01:52 PM

How did you fasten them into the bumper?

OEM holes?

Cheers

The Hella 500's will NOT mount using the factory holes.

The Hella 500's have a single large bolt on the bottom of the light just like hte PIAA lights. You will need to follow similar install method as the scoobymods PIAA install. This is why people are pointing you to that.

If you just drill a hole for the bolt in your bumper cover your lights will bounce all over and may actually break the bumper cover. If you are hoping to drill a whole in the bumper cover and metal reinforcing beam, good luck. It is very hard stuff and is really hard to get the nut on the back of the bolt without taking the bumper off.

Well...

that sucks.

Guess I'll just return them then.

Got them in tonight was gonna go throw them in real quick.

Ah well.

willguidry 12-10-2002 05:32 PM

Ya know, I just looked at the website over at scooby mods, and they only fastened it with one bolt.

Sideways said he just cut the harness off the stocks, and spliced the Hellas to that. No need for all that crap relay and crap.

They are saying that if you didn't already have fogs, you would need the realy for toggle switches and stuff.

But since we already have fogs with switches, I COULD just splice in and bolt it on right?

Please help I want to throw them on before it gets too freezing cold tonight.

Cheers

BUMP

AGAIN
[emailprotected] 12-10-2002 11:24 PM

you need the Kartboy Piaa mounts to make the install easier.
www.kartboy.com

i did my car without taking the bumper off. you will need to take the fender liners out tho.

au112 12-10-2002 11:26 PM

I think you can just splice the hella wires the stock fog light wires, unless if you want to have higher wattage bulb.

Without re-wire the new relay and wires, you don't have to take off the bumper skin but I think you have to drill a hole like what they did in scoobymods.

Take your time :D

so Ok, let me get this straight....
1 bolt to install the 500's
mark where you need to drill
drill using a bit 10mm...into your bumper...
now just put the foglight into teh hole, slide the bolt threw, and screw in the nut from behind?

or is this totally wrong? anything? any tips..
ATX25RS 12-11-2002 12:18 AM

just mount them in the grill.....like mine...i gave up on the stock locations a long time ago...

i used L brackets from home depot and they are mounted into the grill

thanks for the reinforcement....that IS why i suggested scoobymods, although after I saw that i kinda gave up on that idea
willguidry 12-11-2002 05:42 AM

Well I half expected to have to drill a hole.

Not a big deal for me. I don't plan on going any higher in wattage for the fogs. So I can just splice into the old fogs. Yes?

anyhoo, thanks for the info keep it coming.

Can anyone elaborate on the scooby mods actual light install portion?

I see the Kartboy mounting bracket thing, but I don't see how this could be used to help me. I know it goes into the fog light housing, but how do you connect the fog light assembly to this kartboy piece? What is it's function?

Without the kartboy mount, you light won't fall off but it will shake badly on bumpy road, because the bumper skin is not strong enough to hold it tight.

My piaa 80XT pro shake like hell without the mounts (plus my piaa are very heavy). But I don't use kartboy mount, I have used something else.

Andy
DangeRS 12-11-2002 08:43 AM

so teh kb mount is just a piece of metal? and screwing the metal into teh factory holes, then screwing the foglight into the metal bracekt and the bumper, it allows the foglight to be more stable..because your somewhat in a sense adding a layer of metal for reinforcement? am i correct or WAY off?
willguidry 12-11-2002 10:12 AM

Sounds like thats all they are doing.

I think I will be going to Home depot to buy my own damn metal and do this myself.

Can't imagine paying 40 bucks + shipping for two small pieces of metal.

Geez Loueez, how can something so easy be made so difficult. Sidewayz is right. I did it the same way. Cut your old wiring at the end, splice in the new wiring and bolt them up. My car has a little metel lip behind that plastic peice, and theres no bouncing around. A tip is to mount them alittle snug to the top of the hole so they dont bounce. The Hellas come with a swivel bracket. So bolt it and swivel it up snug to the top of the hole. heres a pic of mine. Hard to see them but here they are.
DangeRS 12-12-2002 01:44 AM

man i knwo the wiring it up man.... im talking about mounting the foglights...people say no it will bounce, others say it wont. For it not to bounce and use the bolt it came with what did you do, insteead of using the kb brackets.... and you say GeEez LouEzZz... its just one question....moutning, not wiring them up, MOUNTING the hella 500's
au112 12-12-2002 02:39 AM

Just mount them withtout the bracket, then you will know rather you need the brackets or not. If you can't stand the bouncing, then get the brackets. It isn't that to take the fog light off afterward. :D

willguidry 12-12-2002 11:39 AM

Ok, I don't know how big you guys hands are,

but there is NO way I can mount the hellas up-side down with the bolt going into the upper bumper without taking the whole damn thing apart.

Listen, I took the day off to do this, so I need help ASAP.

Does ANYONE have instructions on how to do this WITHOUT the KB mounts or taking the whole damn car apart for FOGS?!?!?!

Pictures would be brilliant.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Cheers

No easy way
Dude,

There is no easy way to SUCURELY mount the Hella 500 fogs in the factory location.

You MUST put metal behind the light in order to have a non shaking light.

The KartBoy mount is the only one offered off the shelf for those that do not want to make one themselves.

The easiest way to mount the lights is to do it with the bumper off the car. Otherwise you need to remove all the coverings behind.

you are right about the spicing of the wire. it is the easiest way to make the proper connection to just splice into you factor wires. As long as you don't change the bulbs, you will be alright.

This is an easy install, however it is not quick and easy. It takes time.

I recommend taking the bumper off. Take your time and do it right.

Well,

I'm done.

*WOOT*!!!!!!

Ended up going to home depot for sheet aluminium.

Halfway there I thought, "Hey, I wonder if that thick aluminium computer case door would work?"

Turned around, copied the design off of Kartboy's website,

And busted out the metal shears.

3 1/2 hours later, FINISHED!!

And they look SWEET!

I ended up having to undo the clips on the under body,
and fastening the hella mounting bolt to the chassis was the HARDEST part. Took me the longest too.

If you don't wanna take off the bumper, as I didn't prepare for a LONG time laying on your back trying to tighten that sucker.
I ended up using needlenose adjustable pliars, as thats all that could fix in the tight little place.

and my hands are ALLLL banged up right now.

So, USE METAL as a backing. Lights still "KINDA" wiggle, but not NEARLY as much as they would with just an ABS skin.

I will post picks tomorrow or so. Cheers

Will
willguidry 12-12-2002 04:13 PM

to clarify, "wiggle" means really trying to move the sucker with your fingers.

yah, i just installed mine at work, i basically took off the front bumper, aligned them up, and followed soem of the instructions off the scoobymods website...... wasnt hard at AALLL.. i thought the front bumper was gonan be a pain taking off, wasnt AT ALL...but i did mount the foglights in the stock location to the bumper skin.... anway, its not liek you can use these for dailey driving, these thigns are BRIGHT! no way are these everyday foglights, but they do look good....i also got an inlien fuse hold and 10gauge powerflow kit and ran it to a switch inside my car and to the battery...

- if i install some hella yellow stars in the hella 500's will the housing and light produced become yello? or woudl i have to buy soem tint spray...
willguidry 12-13-2002 08:22 AM

Indeed the Hella 500 lights are bright, but legal in all states.

Did you purchase the FOGS? or the DRIVING lights?

As there is a huge difference in light patterns between the two.

The Hella Yellowstar bulbs make the light output VERY yellow.

Get the Yellowstars here, www.rallylights.com talk to Dave.

No need for tinting. I love these lights!

Now, my field of vision extends WAY out to the sides of my car! I have never seen lights that give this kind of look. LOVE THEM.

Next up, driving lights for the grill between the headlights

Cheers

DangeRS 12-13-2002 12:37 PM

ha ha hmMm i think i got the driving lamps:) ha ha ha, oh well, they are nice, you said still legal? how so, those suckers are brighter then my headlights......
willguidry 12-13-2002 12:52 PM

DangeRS,

The driving lights are VERY ILLEGAL.

They are Rally lights. Ment for Offroad ONLY.

You get tagged by the piggly wiggly's with those things on, your fined.

The fog lights are MUCH brighter than stock, but the light pattern breaks after 60 feet or so. The driving lights go up to 150+ feet I believe.

So, you may want to return them, you already got the hardest part done, mounting the bracket, just return the lamps, and get the fog lamps instead, that way all you'll have to do is bolt the new lamps to your already mounted mount. :)

No biggie. But seriously, keep those HELLA covers over them, my buddy has the driving lights on his truck, he only turns them on in backroad situations. Can't wait to get mine!

Cheers

Will
