Carbon/Aluminum MOMO Shift Knob

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or if anyone has is using this. I am currently bidding on one at Ebay and wanted to know what everyone thought about that particular shift knob. It looks awesome so I'm looking for more feedback regarding how it feels and such.
Thanx

I don't have my WRX, but I ordered mine with one (retail=$138) Looks great, cant tell ya how it feels yet.
:)

Does it use set screws to attach it? If so, make sure you can get those suckers so they don't back off like most tend to. Nothing worse than having the shift knob come off in your hand while driving... I've heard people using a bit of fuel line to give the screw something to "bite" into.

Momo Carbon fiber/Alum shifter

Mine was purchased from revolutionsmotorsports (check vendors/web site).
I had my dealer install along with the dash carbon fiber kit.
The look is awesome and it goes with the OEM alum pedals!
The feel is good (also, "cool" to the touch in summer).
There has been no loosening of the set screws to date (1550 miles so far)-Go for it-You will enjoy! Enhances the car interior appearance...
Good Luck...

That's not the MOMO (ack, $138) but the titanium STi knob, I'd say. I like my Momo (airleather/aluminum, or something like that), matches the steering wheel perfectly.

I'm guessing they all install the same way.

This is the leather one:

You are right it matches the wheel nicely:

No, this MOMO knob matches the interior perfectly. :)

The leather texture, the aluminum, and the MOMO insignia makes it look like a factory item.

AHHHH those pics get me excited. I was a little apprehensive cause I wasn't sure if it would match and all but from seeing those pics it makes the interior look SO NICE! Where did you guys get yours?
Right now I am one day away from winning that shifter. But if that doesn't work out I want to make sure that I know where I can get one. I know one of you got one from autoinnovations but the website itsn't fully functional.
Any feedback...

Thanks,
Alex

I installed the momo shift knob and everything is perfect except for the boot not fitting properly. What did you use to keep the boot from falling. I'm thinking about using speaker tubing to keep the boot from falling.....

If you read down this thread you'll see I posted a link to the install directons it's in there...

My shift knob is loosening after using it for a day or two...its hapenned twice.......anyone else enounter this problem....am I not fastening the screws tight enough....???
impretzel 10-28-2001 08:41 PM

Hi I wnna know how much "taller" is this particular knob compared to the stockers. Thanks
Peaty 10-28-2001 09:02 PM

The knob itself or how it sits on the shifter
WRX Power 10-28-2001 09:09 PM

This one matches your interior better if you have the carbon fiber trim option on the MY02 WRX

I have the fake C/F & Aluminum shift knob on my WRX and I love it. My one problem is that it does get hot when I park under the sun. Solution: shift knob condom! Just cut the tip off a sock and when the shift knob is really hot, just cover it with the sock until it cools down. When the knob condom isn't in use, store it in the ash tray.

Aside from the heat problem, it looks and feels great.

sigh...

I have the momo carbon aluminum race knob. The thing is, the rubber piece that came with it got stuck in the very top of the knb inside... so the screws have nothing to "bite" into... what do i do?

and i think the screws i got are damaged.... where can i get new ones? thanks, bryant
GregBolby 10-29-2001 10:27 AM

if you dont put anti-sieze on the threads of the screws, then you will be screwed they will strip out the threads on the insde of the knob!

Greg
VanillaEps 10-29-2001 10:37 AM

Anti-Seize! please explain...cause my screws are loosening after I use the knob for a while. I love the knob......if this doesn't work out I might have to look for something else....but I so don't want to...............
Mister Toro 10-29-2001 11:41 AM

Anti-sieze is not a good idea. Actually with the Momos you'll want to use Loctite 242 (the blue removable variety) on the set screws to keep them tight. Small tubes are available for around $1 at good auto parts stores. Be sure to follow instructions:

-Shake tube well (sounds silly for the small tube, but do it).
-Snap off end of tube and apply reasonable amount to each set screw.
-Allow to dry for ~10 minutes.
-Install set screws with long end of supplied (originally anyway) hex wrench.
-Once everything is snug, put the hurts on them with the short end of the hex wrench (but don't break off the wrench!).
-Don't use the knob for an hour or so.

If done properly (and you haven't already damaged the shifter threads too badly with loose screws), you shift knob should stay put for years. I've been pretty rough with mine and no slippage or loosening.

I've seen people gripe about Momo's fitment, but these guys are world renowned for making quality gear. Enjoy.
GregBolby 10-29-2001 11:52 AM

whooooops anti sieze is for spark plugs!!!! DOH!

my fault thats what i used the 242 blue put some on the screws and screw them in

Greg

VanillaEps 10-29-2001 01:52 PM

Could I find this Loctite at an auto parts store??
Mister Toro 10-29-2001 02:27 PM

Sure. Advance Auto, Pep Boys, Carquest, etc. should all know what 'blue loctite' is... just make sure they give you 242. If you use the red 271, you won't be able to remove them... or tighten them if you didn't get them tight enough the first time. There are also other colors for high heat apps etc., but blue 242 is appropriate here.
VanillaEps 10-29-2001 08:31 PM

Thanks, I'll check that out. I definately need them to stay on.
wrxlvr 10-30-2001 10:39 AM

SubEd,

no, its the Momo race airleather. You can get it at Flatirons subaru in Boulder, CO. I'm not paying the $138 though. I'm paying $61 on Ebay.
VanillaEps 10-31-2001 08:54 PM

Loosening knob

I found out why my knob was loosening up. When I pulled it out I realized that the screws were being tightening to the metal rod and not the rubber top. When I checked my shifter I saw that the rubber top had going all the way in.
So to rememdy the situation, since no matter what I did the rubber would go all the way in I used two rubber tops....that way it would stop the second one from going all the way in. I then screwed them on with Loctite 242 and now I am just waiting to dry and hoping that it doesn't loosen up that way.
Peaty 10-31-2001 09:40 PM

The set screws are supposed to go into the metal on the shifter not any rubber as far as I know. at least that's the way mine is and it's never come loose
VanillaEps 11-03-2001 01:00 PM

It got loose again! I guess screwing them on the metal part is right.......
WREX 11-04-2001 10:33 AM

i've got a momo knob - never used any loc tite or equivalent and never had any problems. it's been installed in my car for about 2 months. i also had it install in my old ride for years and no problems with rattles of looseness etc.

the rubber is supposed to remain at the tip of the shift level to reduce vibration or rattle. the screws are no where close to it, and are intended to thread straight into the metal shift level.

there is tons of documentation for this - so you shouldn't have resource issues.
WREX 11-04-2001 10:40 AM

Peaty

tangent - WRX steering wheel? very cool. did you manage to keep the air bag functionality?
VanillaEps 11-04-2001 08:43 PM

Thanks for the help. Ok so now this time I have them threaded onto the metal part with some loctite. Hopefully now it wont get loose once again.
