Best HID kit? part 1

TonyWRX 10-13-2002 11:48 AM

Best HID kit?

What are people using for HID kits. What brands? I dont know where to start looking. I've heard of Philips and the McCulloch systems. But what do you guys think is the best from reviews/experience?
ZoomnWRX 10-13-2002 01:25 PM

i have hella 4300k low beam hid's in my morette headlights. i love them, huge improvement in ligh pattern and night vision
TitanWRX 10-13-2002 02:05 PM

if u want to blind everyone then get philips 6000k. i have em on stock headlight housing and of the reflective lenses, it blinds everyone. i got mine for 475 out the door.
Daffy Duck 10-13-2002 03:20 PM

I would go with McCulloch

I have the McCulloch H4 and no problem since this March. Also, I know if there is a problem, I can contact Ggarage for warranty. Try to get warranty from other companies and you'll know price difference is not a factor.

I just looked in the back of Automobile Magazine and they have an ad for CATZ HID kit for 9007bulbs. What is different about this kit is that it has High and low beams. The reason I havent gotten hids already is that you sacrifice the high beam, but if this kit is what the ad says it is I think it could revolutionize the aftermarket for HID technology. It says that 3-different kelvin temps are available. Im gonna go check out the website.
GoodFinder 10-13-2002 04:05 PM

I too need to do an HID upgrade. Interested to hear what other people are doing.

I have 6k McCulloch's in my stock housing. I must say, it's the best thing I've puchased for my Sub. Lighting is superb and I don't blind anyone. I can get you a set of 9007 for $400 shipped. I have pics too if you'd want to check them out. I'm not a vendor or anything but if I were to suggest a kit, I'd pick the McCulloch's. They're freaking awesome!! Kind of purplish, bluish tint, really a full range in spectrum. And it's completely PnP (sounds like a transistor :) )

subarex...did you get anymore information on those high and low beam HID's...i'm interested...
clamdip 10-13-2002 06:58 PM

yep, mcculloch's are simply the best. talk about great customer service along with a great product, can't ask for anything more. all you mcculloch owners out there, you know what i'm talking about.
TBT323 10-13-2002 09:54 PM

Phillips Ultinon kits are supposedly top notch! They are the ones straight from germany.
subarex 10-13-2002 11:19 PM

It looks like the Catz is either still developing these High/Low HID 9007s or they haven't yet imported them to this country. I think it would be worthwhile to wait until these come out before investing in HIDs. Their website is www.fet-usa.com Check it out
hkwan 10-13-2002 11:53 PM

So you guys are saying that the HID's don't have high beam? What happens if you need to read a road sign in the dark or something?

Has anyone experienced HID's rated @ 8000k color temp.?
TonyWRX 10-14-2002 12:06 AM

thanks subarex ill check it out
jlogan9 10-14-2002 12:21 AM

What are the different color codes again? I know it depends on the temperature, but other than that I have no clue

Thanks!
clamdip 10-14-2002 02:44 AM

if you want top notch HID's and are willing to spend the money, go with Bellof HID's. if not, i say go with mcculloch's cause that's simply the best for your money. as for color temps, 4500K gives you a whitish-bluish color, more white though. as you go higher in temp it starts to get more purple, like the bmw's and mercedes.

http://www.mccullochhid.com/download/McCulloch_HID_FAQ.pdf

check ou the link to read a FAQ about these bulbs, pretty interesting. I'm going to get a pair for one reason alone, they draw less amperes from my alternator and that is good news for my car stereo. No more dimming headlights maybe?!!
jlogan9 10-14-2002 02:49 PM

you gotta love when you turn on your stereo and the lights dim! HAHA. Or what about the one that everytime your sub hits, the lights flicker...well that maybe due a wiring problem:confused:
well_armed 10-14-2002 03:11 PM

I had my alternator power cord rewired, and hefty grounding done to the enging bay (grounding mod). The wiring isnt shotty, i'm just drawing a lot of power:devil:
hkwan 10-14-2002 04:21 PM

Has anyone heard of the HID made by Osram? How are they?

For those of us who are running wtih HID's, do you find it often that you wish you have high beam?

You are still going to have high beams, they will just be halogen. Osram is a well know company. Audi uses Osram hid products on their cars.
As far as color temp. The higher you go the more blue or purple the lights will appear. But with higher temps, less light output is produced.
BMWs use a color temp of 4300K, while audis are somewhere in the the 5000 range.
Phillips Ultinon are one of the best for about >600

HID Kits

Hella (aka Philips) and Osram make components only. They do not sell wholesale/retail HID kits from their "catalog". Calling it a Philips kit is like buying Intel CPU and call it an Intel Computer System.

The only real kits made by a manufacturer is Catz and McCulloch (and ???). Catz is made by Bellof and the Bellof ballast is by Matsu****a/Panasonic (JDM HID Ballasts). McCulloch HID and Ballast is made by McCulloch.

With these two brand name companies, you can get REAL warranty because they made them and packaged them, not bought from somewhere that came from somewhere that was made by some factory that bought the components from Germany.

For a big investment like HID, it would be wise to know how to get service when crap happens. However, taking a risk has its rewards.
TonyWRX 10-14-2002 08:54 PM

what are some of the problems that people run into with the HID's? Do they ever burn out like lights?
GoodFinder 10-14-2002 09:00 PM

Daffy Duck,

Very helpful information.

Thank you very much!

HID bulb does die, but after 4~5 years of usage. Normally, it's the ballast that dies first. Electronics are not as reliable as bulb metal (like a muffler, header, etc.).

Got this email from a vendor here in canada.

"Bellof plans to have the 9007 dual beam kit released by the
beginning of 2003. Testing has been ongoing through 2002 and
production is expected to begin in early 2003.

Please check back with us by December 2002 for more details.

Thank you for your interest in Bellof HID products. "

GoodFinder 10-16-2002 08:41 AM

Horus,

Thanks for the update. That would be awesome if we can have HID for both low and high beam.

GoodFinder :)
hkwan 10-16-2002 12:33 PM

Horus, ballpark price?
Horus 10-16-2002 01:09 PM

They dont have a price yet, but the H4 dual kit costs 1500$cdn, so roughly 900-1000 usd. Bellof kits arent cheap, but the quality is very good.

TonyWRX 10-16-2002 01:27 PM

what is the difference between 9007 and H4?

So how will the high beam be operated under halogen lighting? when we change out the light bulb with the HID Xenon bulb, don't we lose the halogen? Are you saying that the Xenon bulb has the halogen bulb combined into it?
Horus 10-16-2002 02:19 PM
what is the difference between 9007 and H4?
The H4 kit is made for another kinda bulbs. 93-01 Imprezas use the H4.
