Best place to hardwire a radar detector in '07 Impreza?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. My brother has been on this board for a LONG time, I'm not sure what his name on here is though... he has an SVX, not sure what year.
Anyway, this is my first post (other than those three B.S. responses I had to get out of the way to create a new thread), and instead of making a wasteful introduction thread, I thought I'd ask a question (and do some of that useless introductory stuff :p).
Today I got my first Subaru: a brand new '07 Impreza 2.5i Sport Wagon, Urban Gray, Auto. I'm already very excited and happy about the car. My former car was a '99 Audi A6 2.8Q, which turned into a maintenance nightmare.
Okay, so, on to my question: Is there a good place to hardwire my detector? I have a hardwire kit, as it was hardwired in my Audi, and it's a Passport 8500- though I think that bit of info is irrelevant. I guess I could've searched, I'm sure this topic has been covered, but it gave me an excuse to make a first post.
Glad to be on the forum.

Do you have the upgraded rear view mirror? I forgot the name of it but if you have one of those you can wire up to the back of that I'm pretty sure.

for me...it put the detector on top of the clock pod
and wire it directly to the cig. lighter power supply

Nope, don't even have map lights... that's why I'm in a pinch. I had it hardwired to my map lights in my A6.
After looking around a bit, I noticed a few blank button spaces to the left of the steering wheel, presumably for fog lights and such... one of these has a plug going to it, but it's "plugged" into one of the dead buttons. If this is meant for fog light power, would this be a good point to tap into? I have the Passport 8500 smart cord thing...

How do I go about getting to that? Just rip apart the center console? Any secret to taking these pieces off? Any useful links? :p

I just wired my second one yesterday (first one was a P.O.S. Cobra, so I had to replace it) I wired it by:
1) Pull the clock bezel out of its position
2) Cut the ciggerette lighter plug off of the detectors cord
3) split the cord so the red and white wires are seperate
4) drop the cord down through the whole where the clock bezel normally is
5) pull the shifter/cigerette lighter bezel out of its position revealing the back wires of the cigerette lighter
6) splice the "red" wire from the radar's cord into the "red" wire behind the cigerette lighter, and then splice the "white" radar wire into the (i think it's black) wire for the cigerette lighter.
7) Replace the shifter bezel and the clock bezel and BAM!! Done. **Shouldn't take more then 20 minutes**
PM me if you need aditional help, When i did it the first one I screwed up the cigerette lighter wiring and ended up having to re-wire that whole harness so I know that wiring setup like the back of my hand now.:)

Before you cut and wires make sure to test them with a Digital Multimeter :). As for the power source make sure to put a fuse inline.
| gangolfus | 02-25-2007 03:37 PM |
I mounted mine right above the clock pod and tapped the clock power to power it. The entire cable run is about 6 inches... couldn't be easier.

i have an 03 wrx. i have mine hardwired into a switch by the cruise control/fog light buttons. which the cord then goes up through the pillar and through the headliner to just above the rear view mirror. i have a switch to turn it on and off as well, and its wired in so that it turns off when the car shuts off.
| trooper1556 | 02-26-2007 04:26 PM |
i don't know much about the 2.5i but i wouldn't be suprised if the harness for the optional dimming mirror/homelink is there, thats where i hardwired mine to. just make sure you tap into the key switched 12v not the constant 12v... that is unless you prefer to have to turn the detector on & off everytime you drive.

With the clock pod there are 2 power wires.... one always on and one only when the car is on so you can choose.

I mounted my v1 above the rear view mirror and routed the wires down the a pillar, through the dash, and into the cig lighter. nobody can see it outside of the car.

I have my 8500 passport mounted right above the clock pod and i hard wired it into a electrical block i made. you don't even have to buy a hardwire kit, i took the time and took apart the cigarette lighter and mounted the mute button right next to the heat controls (so its easy to mute while driving.) heres some pics

wow.. that's pretty sweet micker.. i'll have to think about trying to do that but i don't think i can.. yet... ideally i'd like to mount my 8500 like that (as low as possible so it can detect laser easily...t hats the problem if you had it on the mirror) and get laser blinder installed too .. w/ that plus veil.. and my two eyes, i should be a lot safer...

v1's are supposed to be mounted as high as possible.

So the red wire is power and white is ground? (coming from the radar detector)
I have a V1 and am going to wire it up soon once I figure out where to mount it.

yeah I've seen all those positions before, im just trying to decide if I want to put it behind the mesh stuff by the mirror because that hurts detection. That's my ideal spot though It's reversible unlike the clock pod spot. I would probably run the mini display down the a-pillar and on my steering wheel cover or maybe even beside my gauge pod on the a-pillar. I'm looking at the 9500  Might have to do a little swap

It depends on what color the wires are in the phone cord. I just stripped all of the covers off and held them to a 9v battery. When you have the right connection, you'll hear a crackling/static sound and it will light up very very dim. Then cut the wires you're not using and attach the ones you are to the cig lighter.
RP31 that's a sick setup with the arrows in the clock pod

do u know if it would get the same signal reading if it were mounted upside down through the mesh?

I imagine that as long as you keep the front and back detectors facing front and back, the arrows would still work properly. But I haven't tried it.

i just tried to mount my bel rx65 above my rear view mirror... i spliced in to the plug thats supposed to be for the auto dimming / home link rear view mirror and i got "LOW VOLTAGE" and a beeping sound from the detector...
i thought that maybe the plug wasn't putting out enough voltage for the radar so i tried again with the wire going to my moon roof (i have a limited 07 wrx), same error. and then again with the map lights... all read low voltage... is it because the hard wire kit isnt actually made for 12v or are these accessories not actually giving out 12v?? i dont have a voltmeter so i couldnt check... anyone know?

gotcha... there must be a mess of epoxy behind that panel :) I don't care about the mute button, I want the smartcord in a spot that I can see it in when i am driving down the road with the stereo blasting. Sometimes i can't hear my RX65.... it's louder than the 8500 x50 on Ka, it's a combo of my 1400watts rms stereo and my deaf ears.
| dougkmcse | 05-03-2007 11:09 PM |
I used the hardwire kit i hid the unit in the dash then i wired an LED of the hardwire unit and installed it next to the clock. You can't miss it even with the stereo cranked. I also put a mute button in the center conlsole.
| Micker72 | 05-04-2007 10:49 AM |
2mprzya couldn't have said it better, i just took it apart and made a little mount behind the panel out of a bottle cap for the little circuit board to attach to, and then drilled 3 little holes for the leds and mute button. slapped that stick on there and it looks pro.
i have the same problem with having my music to loud and not hearing my radar go off, i was thinking of splicing 2 or 3 leds into the alert led and having them shine onto the gage cluster, so i instantly know when its going off

I managed to buy a STI maplight & harness, and installed both into my 2.5i this past winter.. what a job! But I LOVE having maplights again!

I put my smart display next to the a-pillar and the dash. It's easy to see when i got the music to loud.

holy old thread bump batman! i finally hard wired the rx65 just above and to the left of the mirror. i ran some tests with the dot matrix to see if it would reduce the sensitivity and it's the same. I lost the rear laser capibility but who lasers you as you are driving away? if you get a laser alert you are pretty much screwed anyways. the smart cord/mute is mounted on top of the steering column right next to the boost gauge. So cruising at night with the stereo blasting i get a nice bright led in my face whenever there's an alert.
| boostdog | 08-31-2007 07:27 AM |
I as well do not have the lights but just ran the power wire from the det. to the headliner to the a pillar (d side) and down to the fuse panel. tucked all the wire and it looks nice and clean right below my mirror.
| MarkRx | 10-17-2007 04:06 AM |
boy i love bumping old threads... I love to tinker and here's what i did:
Best buy now sells smart direct wire cords that will work with the 8500 x50 and rx65. maybe some other models that use the phone jack for power but i'm not sure. they sell the red and blue cords for $29. for some reason i figured the alert light was going to be a blue led on the blue cord. So instead of researching i bought one and replaced my red alert light. i turn the key and the power led is blue and the alert light is yellow now! it's not what i expected and it's bright, but not good enough.
So i opened the unit and unsoldered the led's and swapped them. I turned the key and realized the yellow power light was very dim and the blue alert light was BLINDING. they are running different voltage leds in there... i ended up swapping it back since the blue was way too bright. I want the alert light to alert me even if i can't hear the radar detector go off but i dont want it to blast me in the face making it hard to see the road... yes it's that bright! So in case anyone else decides to swap the leds, there ya go...

another bump for this...
I just bought a valentine 1 and am thinking of using the autodimming mirror light.
I looked at the mirror tonight and see there's a plug with some wires from that plug. Do i just connect some wires without opening the headliner or how does it go?
I'm a n00b when it comes to electrical.
Pictures are worth more to me than words too =)

I have a RX-65. Anyway I had my radar charger cord stolen from a tow a body shop. SO I went to Circuit City and had them install a hard wire kit, it has the mute button with a green led on it. I mounted it right beside the gear shift. Super easy to see and not hard to get to. Also the I have the auto dim mirror as well. The radar wire runs down with it. Can't even tell it is there unless you see the radar behind the mirror. As it sets I am the only person that can see it.
