I got the satin black vinyl spray dye here.

I did not paint the inside black part of the wheel and it is almost a perfect match to this spray dye. I taped plastic leaf bags all around for any overspray and it worked great. I like it a lot better than the silver plastic.

dude, that looks waaaaaaaayyyy better than that silver fake metallic looking cover... awesome job! One thing though. the cover actually pops off pretty easily once you remove the star headed screws on both sides... would have made the dyeing process a little easier...
stylin525 08-05-2005 07:46 PM

That is very very nice. Great thinking

Hey can you post a pic from the same distance as your before pic???? Looks great!!!!
MadMan77 08-06-2005 09:31 AM

Is that the satin black dye that you used? It doesn't look gloss, but you never know.

It is the satin black dye. It does not look glossy. The flash might give it a little glare. I sprayed very lightly about 8 inches away. I put on 3 coats with 5 minutes between each coat.

^_^ I'm confused because is it me or did your shifter all of a sudden become shorter.. And your AC vent surround is CF
offset 08-06-2005 01:09 PM

That looks awesome!! It looks like you have the Competition Concepts gauge pod as well; how do you like it? How is the fit?

I think I will have to do this mod as well. My question is does anyone know how easy/possible it is to change the silver rings around the gauges in the gauge cluster? If those were easy to take out and spray I would love that as well.

You have good eyes! It is the Kartboy short shifter and it is in my top 5 favorite mods. My gauge pod also changed from Defi to Carbon Concepts{awesome fit and finish} and I replaced thge Passport 7500 with a V1{hardwired and mounted above the rear view mirror}. That before photo is now 2 years old. :)

I got them on a Nasioc group buy last summer. I used to see them on Ebay a lot too.

I have always thought my stock WRX momo wheel looked way better than the STi wheel...

Until i saw your pics! Beautiful job!
advanracing62 08-07-2005 08:37 AM

looks really good!
robfuqua 08-07-2005 11:56 AM

I did just the opposite on my '05 STI....
I took the BLAH black surround and painted it silver:

[IMG][/IMG]

I never liked the "way too much" silver on the '04 steering wheel; but the '05 needed a little something.

Dude, your '04 wheel looks hot now! GREAT JOB!
STI_Jaguar 08-07-2005 12:32 PM

Hey thats a nice touch as well. shiate.

yea, i am doing that.
offset 09-29-2005 09:22 AM

Bumping an old thread here... I am trying to figure out on the 04 wheel if the center cap (just the little round silver and pink STi logo part) can be removed, or do you have to mask it off before painting? I don't want to try to pry at it and scratch it up if it won't pop out.

I went ahead and just took the whole center section off to begin with BTW. I bought some of the DupliColor vinyl paint, but it was either flat black or gloss black, and I went with the gloss. I am hoping it isn't too shiney or anything.

PJAWRX03 09-30-2005 04:36 PM

I think it looks much better but I have a question about it. Is there an indentation (spelling) from removing the silver part. Either way the silver piece looked cheap. Great job.

If Anyone w/ a 05 STi wheels wants to do this....DON't---> I will trade you my 04 Sti wheels for yours so you can have this!!!
"MADDOG" 10-04-2005 01:50 PM

Guys, are we sure that when you remove these 2 x star headed bolts from the side of the steering wheel, the air bag surround will just pop off... as I am going to attempt this little job on Saturday and would hate to get a mouthfull of airbag :D

kind regards "MADDOG"
Mrfairlady 10-04-2005 01:57 PM

It won't blow...just make sure you disconnect the Negitive cable for approx 10mins (while pumping the brake and Horn) to get all the power out of the system.

Should be 2 Torx Screws,...and it won't "pop" off but will kinda fall off...so just hold it and don't bang it around.A Spark could def cause the Bag to go off...though highly unlikely!

just be gentle and should be a yellow airbag plug or something and the that should be it.

Pluging it in and starting the car....just sit in the passenger seat when turning th ekey after pluging everything in if your still uneasy about it.

Don't sweat it though!
offset 10-04-2005 04:52 PM

I am super paranoid about airbags. But yes, unscrew those two hex bolts all of the way and then I had to wiggle it a little to get it loose. Once off there were two connections, once was a simple spade plug (that was kind of tight, just use some pliers to make things easier) and then the airbag connector directly on the back. That connector just make sure to pop-up the little plastic piece on top with a small flathead or something and then the rest of it will just pop right off as well. I will hopefully get it painted soon, and I will try to post up some pics to let everyone see how mine turns out.

all right then; how about you take pictures while your wife takes it off.
nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more!
"MADDOG" 10-05-2005 02:27 PM

Just going to look through the insurance papers to see how much I will get if the airbag does go off while my wife is doing this tricky little job ........ accidently of course

Alright, time to add my results to this thread. I used the DupliColor gloss black vinyl paint. I was a bit worried about the gloss, but thought that would work better than strictly flat black. After first putting the cover back in place I thought it was a bit shiny. After driving it, I think it is really good. I would like to see a wheel with the VHT for comparison, but I think mine turned out as well as I could want (and I want a lot). I also had taken my gauge cluster out at the same time. I wanted to spray the rings around the gauges. I used the same vinyl paint on the rings and IMO they came out awesome (they look much better in person than in pics).

Offset,
looks great!
i had been wondering abt the gloss, as that's all they have for vinyl paint at PepBoys here.

btw - what is the toggle switch w/ the green light for (down by your IC water spray button) ?
Siper2 10-11-2005 08:22 AM

I really love the look of the '04 wheel painted black like that. I think it's my favorite of the STi wheels. :)

Just too bad it wasn't stock like that. :D But when I swap wheels, that's probably what I'll go with. Well.... at least if I do an STi swap. If not maybe I can have someone make a silver/red "2.5RS" logo as an overlay. That might be cool.

Thanks. I am starting to be really happy with the interior. There is only a couple small things left to do. The main one is I want to get my stock shifter trim anondized black. I have seen some DIY kits for that, but I don't want to invest money in something I only do once. And I don't know of any place around me that will do such small part for a reasonable price. Anyone have any good leads on anondizing?? The other thing I want to do is get one of the Redline goods shift boots with the red stitching and have it be cut to match my kb ss. One other thing is I already have a CF pod for the dash that I will be using with a nice Defi BF gauge set once I round up the money.

This little project made me wonder how much work it might be to paint the A, B, and C-pillars and then replace the headliner with black. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard and it might really turn out awesome. I know someone else had done this, but I never got to see any pics. Maybe someone else wants to try this? I went ahead and had my A-pillars wrapped with a set of tweets in them (thx again BakedCookies), which turned out awesome; so I am not up for this painting idea at the moment. I may someday remove the cloth and fiberglass the pillars instead. If I do that I really think I may be going black then.

I noticed that LED and switch kind of stuck out in the picture and someone would ask. It is for my Lidatek LE-30 laser jammer. It is the stock LED and switch that it came with, but at some point I plan on integrating that all a little more. Of course I also plan to turn my Bel RX-75 into a remote mount detector and integrate its buttons in as well. I couldn't find any good microswitches like I wanted yet. So much to do, so little time (and money).
