Best Triple Gauge pod?

Been putting together a setup with Defi BF Ambers and have been looking at gauge pods for the last couple days. Although there are a lot of options, there aren't any that are jumping out at me as the perfect choice. Just wonder what other people have thought of their pods and what they would recommend...
Needs:
-Must fit 3 60mm gauges
-Must fit in the stock clock pod flush(no poor fitting crap)
-Carbon or factory dash matching
Options so far:
Competition Carbon: Very nice looking pod, with little view obstruction. Good build quality and short visors for the gauges. The only Con I can think of is that it is $265
Defi: Fairly large but looks clean and fits Defi gauges well. Comes unpainted which is really turning me off as I would rather have something that is designed to match the stock interior color
ATI: Looks similar to the Defi but has silly little colored covers too. Probably fits the 60mm gauges just fine, but I am still not completely sold on it. Also a little large in size and I read somewhere that it says ATI on the pod.
Anyone that has any suggestions or recommendations I would love to hear them. Pictures would also be great... I have searched extensively, and although I have seen many triple gauge pods, I still havent seen the right one
TIA

if you are that worried about color, have you considered the carbon pods?

I am currently at work, lucky me, but I have the ATI pod and when I get home I can send you some pics. I really like mine, I wasn't that sold on it either but it looks very OEM and fits awesome

That would be great!
The ATI pod looks very nice, however it does have rather large visors and a large back. The Competition Carbon one is a little smaller in size and the visors are shorter, but its freakin expensive

Here's a Gruppe-S carbon pod for $210, but you can get an ATI pod for $110.

^^^ Yeah, I really like that one too. Except for a couple small things
1. It secures using double sided tape, and doesnt clip in place
2. They havent actually posted the pictures of a real one, that picture above is just a mirrored image of the RHD pod. The Demo pod hasnt even arrived yet and the group buy ends in a week, which makes me worry a little
3. The first shipment is arriving till february, which is too long for me to wait!
Keep em coming!
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Clipping in isn't necessarily a good thing. I have the now extinct Gruppe-S carbon pod and had to remove it to add some wiring. Broke off one of the clips, even after I greased it up before installation and did a voodoo dance with a chicken's foot in the light of a full moon. I remounted the pod with some double-sided velcro tape where the clip broke off and you can't tell any difference.

Hum... I guess I didnt think of that. Most pods I see for sale (used) have atleast one broken tab.
At this point I think I am either going for the ATI or the Competition Carbon, as I cant wait till feb. for that other pod. Any more suggestions or pictures would be awsome...
Thanks everyone

Gfunk, I have the Defi pod with my Defi BF's and I hated the color also. My solution was to spray the pod with dash matching paint, SEM brand Med. Smoke. Came out perfect for me and I still have 3/4 of a can left. PM me if you get the Defi pod and need it painted. Oh, free of charge too, got to look out for the locals!

Eric,
Thanks for the offer man. I remember meeting you at the marcus dairy meet last year after you got your STI. I remember seeing your defis, just didnt notice the pod. I'll take note of that color, but still cant decide which one I want. Carbon looks coll but is stupid expensive. I imagine the fitament on the defi pod is perfect though....
Thanks again!

Thanks for the link, I actually just purchased that pod! It looked to be really high quality and I could not find one negative comment about the company. I will let everyone know how it turns out and take some pictures.
It doesnt look quite as big as the DEFI pod, but not as small as the Competition Carbon pod...
Thanks for all your help!

I've seen kakumei stuff..they are not the highest quality stuff out there.
Their pod is usually uneven in texture and CF weave.
5/10 in quality at most.

Everything I have seen online looks grade A. Even pictures from vendors of actual production pieces look better than most other carbon pods...
I'll definitely post pictures when I get it, but I am pretty optimistic that its gonna be just fine
Thanks for the re-assurance

I gotta +1 the Defi pod - I've had it since '03 - I've removed it many times in the past three years (I change gauges more than I buy underpants). I painted mine with charcoal grey vinyl paint. Just make sure it's not too humid out, or do it indoors.

How does the Kakumei visor compare to the Defi one? The Defi looks like a freaking clam, and the carbon concepts one is way more than I want to spend. I'm hoping the kakumei will be more like the carbon concepts visor. You know, small.

Anyone ever think of wrapping the Defi pod with vinyl instead of painting? When mine shows up I would like to try....Can I mount this to the dash after adding a 1/16 of thickness? Would help with the gauge reflection I always see people complaining about and would make an exact match for color and texture.
| jac04 | 10-21-2007 07:44 PM |
I thought about wrapping my Defi pod in vinyl, but ended up using the SEM paint. The Defi pod fits very snug in the dash opening, but I think you will be OK if the vinyl is very thin - and it would have to be in order to stretch it and conform to all the curves of the pod. IMO it will be very difficult to get the vinyl to conform properly.
If you really want to go that route, you may want to contact someone like Just Dashes (www.justdashes.com). They can vacuum-form vinyl to conform to just about any shape.
If you use the SEM medium smoke paint with a SEM black primer, the color match is excellent. That is what I did. In some lighting conditions, the color looks a little lighter than the dash, but it seems to match the plastic bezel around the main gauge cluster very well. Check it out:
