WRX Sedan Taillight Mod part 1

WRX Sedan Taillight Mod

I did this the other day, took me about 45 minutes to tape them off. I removed them from the car, taped around the clear portion and bought Tester's Model Paint "Window Tint." The light still shines through really well as if they weren't tinted at all.

What do you guys think?

hey that looks pretty good. that would look even better on a black WRX...hmmm..... :)
RobPA 05-25-2002 06:05 PM

Looks GREAT!!! what did you use to reseal the headlights?
SammyDFG 05-25-2002 07:02 PM

BrysImpreza 05-26-2002 12:24 AM

ehhhh, I would have done it the opposite way, cover the red with the black and keep the white, that way the light on the spoiler matches the back ups.
Rather then having 3 different colors Black, Red and White.

But it's just my opinion, what you did still looks good, I'm just big into subtle looks. I'm going to do that when I get my WRX wagon

RobPA, if you had read my post a little closer you'd realize that I said I "masked" it off and painted it externally.

BrysImpreza: Subtle?? Mine's hardly noticeable by regular people, most people assume it comes stock this way, I just prefer the Euro look, like the 98ish VWs that had smoked out turn/reverse signals in the rear. What you speak of, tinting ALL of the red and leaving the white would stick out like a sore thumb compared to what I did. I think that's a bit too extravaggant what you are looking at doing to me. But as they always say, to each their own.

RobPA 05-26-2002 01:14 AM

Hmmm i was going to try and mask it... How did you get the paint to distribute evenly without it running down??

RobPA, my digital camera actually makes them look a lot better than they are. In person they aren't that great looking, as i'm planning on taking the paint off with mineral spirits and re-doing them. Or getting some real window tint and using that. But there's some runs on the lights, nothing obvious, but it's there. Also some spots in the tint that are darker than others which made me unhappy. From an average distance it looks really good, upon closer inspection, EWW. I'm not proud of my work, but the idea is accomplished.

I suggest painting on a really hot/humid day and out of the wind, preferably in a garage if you have one or access to one.

This paint sticks on extremely well also. I did this same mod to my previous car (Prelude) and over a year the paint never chipped off. I sponge over them every time I wash the car.

For the ultimate clean look, get a pro to apply window tint to the lenses.

I like it dude... nice and original. I was gonna ask you to post zoomed-in pix, but I geuss your last post explains why ya didn't. Let us know how it turns out the 2nd time around - cuz from far away it looks nice. Also post pix with the lights on, so we can see how easily they shince through too.
WRX4U2NV 05-26-2002 10:40 PM

I think it looks ok...maybe a tad ghetto. I personally love the taillights on the WRX and wouldn't mess with a good thing. Just remember its your car and your not gonna please everyone so please yourself first and worry about everyone else later.
Diversion 05-27-2002 12:39 AM

I think those black taillight covers are ghetto, but this looks clean to me. Once again, to each their own.

I'll post better pics, and a pic with the turn signals on to show how well the light comes through.

i dont think i like that...
98kPa 05-27-2002 01:21 AM

On a white WRX I think it looks pretty ricey.

Use spray tint made for lights.

Testors Window Tint for models is the same stuff as the dedicated cans of "taillight tint." I checked.

Back from the dead...

...SO, has anyone done this mod lately? Anyone with pix they wanna post? I'm getting very tempted to try doing this on my Silver WRX (but black-out the red, and leave the white).
scaryfastskier 08-20-2002 02:09 AM

And can someone suggest a good place to buy this crap? I am having a hell of a time finding a shop. Even the rice factories around here don't have it.

blaznasn 08-20-2002 03:23 AM

you can probably use vinyl tint. any graphics shop can hook you up.
Hazdaz 08-20-2002 07:09 AM

I think you could use vinyl in the white area, but on the red its a large section and has multiple curves to it, so if ya tried doing it in one piece it would probably be tough to do.
I think the spray-can idea would be the cleanest look. It would have better changes of being even than if you used that Testers paint which you have to apply with a brush.
wrxin' 08-20-2002 08:05 AM

tail lights

kris--
the taillight mod is kinda cool looking, but do you have any pics of it at night from afar--- i wanted to see how it lights up (not up close) but how it appears to people who maybe driving behidn you-- since so much is sealed off, i would have concerns about visibility.

let me know.

dan

you can email me pics at [email protected] too

thanks!
desiwrx02 08-20-2002 11:25 AM

I dont htink it looks that bad. You have a real unique looking WRX.

wrxin' that's not really my kind of thing but I will say it s very well done, and looks professional.
Hazdaz 08-20-2002 12:56 PM

Im with DESI on this one. I don;t think its my thing, but anythign DIFFERENT is good - our cars already look like every other WRX (since besides the stock wing there are no real visual differences from the factory).
I also would be curious to see what they look like lit-up - if you have those pix, maybe you should post them (so everyone can see) instead of just sending them to an email addrees.

Its really hard to tell how bright they are - without a frame of reference - but what kinda paint did you use.
I would go with blackened-out on my car, and I am prettu sure they make a "special" paint for that that still lets the light shine thru, is that the type of paint you used?
Also I was thinking that IF I did smoke my tails, I might try finding theose brighter red bulbs (or possibly LEDs) to compensate for the color so they would end up being just as bright. Ya think thats a good idea?

painted

well actually the body shop painted em when they did my spoiler and trunk lid. it does shine through a bit not not a whole lot. it was done with primer and same paint that was used to do the spoiler and trunk nothing special just some flex additive for the plastic and fiberglass parts. im sure you could order some touchup spray paint from www.paintscratch.com

i just ordered mine from their ill be painting my sideskirts when it comes in on monday. they guarantee a perfect match ............we'll see.
lawn boy 08-21-2002 12:26 AM

you wanted to know what i think...well i thnik it looks hella ghetto.
Lightning Jack 08-21-2002 09:14 AM

I think it look great!! not boring at all
BlkRexWagon 08-21-2002 09:49 AM

I used "Nightshades" from VHT on my black wagon and it came out great. It's a piece of cake to use, does not come off, will not run, and the lights still shine through very well. My only problem with it is that the tailights don't "shine" like they used to, so sometimes they don't look as clean as the rest of the car if you know what I mean. I will post some pics later today if I can.
BTW... a Google search for VHT Nightshades should find the stuff quickly.
Hazdaz 08-21-2002 08:53 PM

BLKREXWAGONE, u got any pix to show us? Concerning the "shine" part that u mentioned, does that mean that the black paint has a matte-type of finish to it when its dry? If so, haave you thought about possibly shooting some clear-coat over it to make it shiny?
I think im gonna go buy some paint tommorrow and try it out this weekend - just don;t know which scheme im conna do.
Also, I THINK this stuff is removable - can anyone verify that?

OK, I was bored... so here are the different options on painting these lights... which do you prefer? (I was tempted to start a new poll on this)
