Best Way To Clean Those Windshields..
My autobody guy just showed this, works wonders...
Just use a pad of steelwool, but it must be the 0000 grade or whatever the finest is. No water no soap, just the pad.
Dont kno if this was readily known info but it was news to me.
P.S. Should I but SIRIUS satellite radio stock, Howard Stern just signed a 5 yr contract with them?
V6TurboTA 10-08-2004 03:41 PM

Its sometimes called auto detailers steel wool :)

I dont do it dry, use window cleaner.

A razor blade (new stainless steel) works well too. Cover the window with window cleaner and scrape the whole surface with the blade.

Its amazing when you can actually see out the windshield ;)

I was told not to put anything on it, but couldnt hurt.
I heard Windex was kinda bad for your windows, I kno it sounds dumb,
but I figure no water= no streaks.
Thanks for the post if anyone else has a good way of doing this, please
do post.

and yea, a clean winshield is great :)
subiekid 10-08-2004 04:54 PM

i use a can of stuff that foams up and a clean rag. subaru glass scratches really easy.
SuBart 10-08-2004 05:10 PM

I cannot get my window perfect no matter how much windex and paper towel I use. It looks clean but from a certain angle in the sunlight all these streaks and smudges show. One day I spent like 15 min on just the front windshield and gave up cause the smears wouldn't disappear.

Works very well, just don't use it on the headlights.
FuzzyNips 10-08-2004 05:50 PM

Use newspaper (with black and white text, not color) instead of paper towels when cleaning your windows. No streaks because of something in the ink. My uncle told me about it and have been using them ever since. It's not a big secret but some of you may have never heard of it before. BTW, it hasn't scratched my windows or anything either, in case you were wondering.
migs76 10-08-2004 05:51 PM

^^^^ what he said + newspaper.
OAK STI 10-08-2004 06:03 PM

In my moms antique shop she has lots of wonderful glass display cases that i was lucky enough to get to clean weekly. light ammonia ,water ,and newspaper are the best stuff to use.Clean glass? What glass!?
z_wrecker 10-08-2004 06:04 PM

And yes you should buy sirius stocks... they will catch up with xm 2 million subscribers in a year at the most. and howard stern is gonna be off the hook on sirius...no censors , nothing.... :)
squeech 10-08-2004 06:37 PM

Make sure not to use ammonia on your other windows if you have tint, though. You won't have tint after awhile

+1 vote for invisible glass. That stuff ownz teh windows!
jac04 10-08-2004 06:51 PM

Another vote for Invisible Glass. For the insides I just use a clean, dry 100% cotton t-shirt. It works great with no streaking.

Be careful with a razor blade. When I took delivery of my 2005 WRX, my rear windshield was all scratched up from them scraping the markings off with a razor blade. Granted it was probably an old, rusty razor blade.

Toothpaste works great too. Smear a bit on the window, get some damp paer towel, work it hard, rinse and wipe over with dry paper towel.
Gets rid of all the bugs and removes the smeary stuff left by old wiper blades and screen wash.
jac04 10-08-2004 09:23 PM

Bon Ami cleanser also works great. A few times a year I will scrub the outside of the windshield with Bon Ami cleanser using a wet sponge. It gets off all that road film. Just make sure to rinse it off thoroughly. I've never tried toothpaste, but I imagine it does the same thing while leaving your windshield minty fresh.
tee_rexx 10-09-2004 06:42 AM

I have been using newspaper for years...........the ink has a small amount of abrasive in it I was told. At any rate it works great and there is always plenty of it with all the junk mail.
Poseur2000 10-09-2004 09:12 AM

For tough grime and bugs on your windscreen use a clay bar. Finish up with the aforementioned Invisible Glass.
Mirage 10-09-2004 08:46 PM

Auto Glym Glass Polish has always worked for me. Wipe it on, wait a few seconds for it to dry, then take it off with a terry cloth towel. No streaks.
GC84ever 10-11-2004 10:51 AM

What should you use if you have Rain-X on your windows?
makanai 10-11-2004 12:20 PM
What should you use if you have Rain-X on your windows?
I used Invisible Glass on my car, Rain-Xed and then did another coat of Invisible Glass on before I took a drive up to Michigan this last week. I didn't have time to do another coat of Rain-X, but it wasn't supposed to rain.

It, in fact, did, and quite a bit. The Rain-X seemed to still be completely effective, so I have to assume the Invisible Glass didn't take it all off. Considering how well Invisible Glass works (+3, I think with my vote), I'd recommend it. In fact, I'm about to head out and clean all the bug gunk off my car with it.

Cheers!

i use that stoners stuff with steel wool...
makes it so clean its amazing
imprezavness 10-11-2004 10:01 PM

howard stern rocks
SuBart 10-11-2004 10:13 PM

Now where to get this autodetailers steel wool?
strohausii 10-11-2004 10:19 PM

i've used newspaper and coffee filters.
no ammonia on tint EVAR.
Heard of using the old style toothpaste for light polishing, i've also looked up on google window polishing compound: cerium oxide.
:D
Uncle Scotty 10-11-2004 10:23 PM

Toothpaste works great on LOTS of stuff...;) and the Bon Ami is what GM uses to take their auto glass back to 'square one' when testing it under different conditions...it has feldspar in it....

Trunk_Monkey 10-17-2004 05:54 PM

Vingegar > Stoners in all ways but price.
0260B4U 10-17-2004 09:32 PM

Invisible glass is da bomb, newspaper is an old detailers trick.

Just ask the experts

Trunk_Monkey 10-17-2004 09:34 PM

Maybe link it to a specific thread on it, or you gonna make us hunt for it all day. :)
0260B4U 10-17-2004 09:35 PM

No just a general direction to ask about stuff.
Trunk_Monkey 10-17-2004 09:40 PM

I tried stoners (invisible glass) but seems to me that only thing left to try on my windshield is razorblades or steel wool, which will be a battle for another day.
strohausii 10-17-2004 09:45 PM
Toothpaste works great on LOTS of stuff...;) and the Bon Ami is what GM uses to take their auto glass back to 'square one' when testing it under different conditions...it has feldspar in it....
Bon Ami, is that like Comet (w/o the beach), or that "barkeepers friend?" I see what you are saying as in glass polishing (feldspar). At least I don't have any water deposits where those pads slide on.

You just don't want ammonia on the tint, I like the stoner's "invisible glass" best.
Uncle Scotty 10-17-2004 10:06 PM

I have used Bon Ami and it makes a bit of a mess(do it on the grass somewhere)...wet the glass...use a wet sponge and light pressure and lots of water to rinse....it should result in a 'water break free' surface....this means that all of the surface contaminants are gone....Water will not bead up on an item that is truly clean, but will form a continuous unbroken sheet -- upon removal from a rinse tank the whole thing will be wet.
strohausii 10-17-2004 10:31 PM

HEY! Rinse Tank? On The grass?
You mean removing the glass altogether from the car?
  That stuff ok on paint/ wax, or just start off the wash with that stuff, and just detail from there then eh?
damn_4eat 10-17-2004 10:59 PM

claybar your windows!
mindchatter 10-18-2004 10:00 AM

Yet another vote for Stoner's Invisible Glass.....as an added bonus it seems to give my windshield a "Rain-X" type coating practically. Love the stuff - probably use one bottle/week.

Here is something you guys might want to try:

Clean glass with vinegar and warm water using 000 steel wool.
Dry and apply RejeX to the glass. Let haze then wipe off. You will have a winterized windshield. Dirty will not stick to the glass and will make future cleaning as easy as just wiping with a damp towel...
FlyingFishSandwich 10-18-2004 04:53 PM

Can we use Invisable glass and newspaper instead of vinegar and steel wool before the RejeX? Also does that stuff have any long term draw backs? How often would you need to go before applying the RejeX again?
0260B4U 10-18-2004 08:16 PM

I know that after the Stoners the glass doent like anything else.

i was bout to say something about claybarring the window, but didnt knwo if anyone had tried that.
[emailprotected] 10-18-2004 08:35 PM

windex is harmful to tints it works ok on the windshield
