Came back to the parking lot & found this part 1

MF-DIF 11-14-2004 01:24 AM

Came back to the parking lot & found this
Came out of my local wally world & noticed a stray cart in front of my car. This kind of concerns me but it's not touching it so I think I'm ok. Wrong. It had to have picked up some major speed to cause this level of damage. Plastic cart at that...I'm still a little suspicous if the cart actually did the damage. I always make it an effort to park far far away & this was no different. No cars around when I went in, none when I came out...just this. Can they repair this fender or am I going to have to get a new one? I'm just worried they won't be able to get the shape right if they are "popping" it back out. It's a flared fender...and I'm usually not too confident with body shops. Probably close to a grand in damage...bye bye access port. :( :furious:

No way a cart did that. Call your insurance company and report it.
Bumble Bee 03 11-14-2004 02:00 AM

man that sucks.... i dont think eaither that cart did it, but who would drive by ur car in the end of parking and hit it like this.... try to look for a used WRB fender on wanted forums before u gonna spend any money from ur own pocket
2k2 11-14-2004 02:02 AM

a new fender is 139 plus paint will probably be around $250... you could probably replace it yourself since its only attacked by 4 bolts I think.

So it would just run you the cost of priming and painting and the fender price... if you didnt report it.
ilnmcom 11-14-2004 02:17 AM

$10
$10 says an SUV or truck hit that car. I'd be really suprised to see a cart do that unless some punk kid was riding a full cart of groceries. :furious:

Huh...your right. Subaruparts is listing the fender for $129. The price is for an 02-03...but I suspect the 04 would be close in that range as well. I had assumed the part would be $350-400. I feel a little better.....still pissed though.

You know I had thought about it but the way my car was parked in the area it was parked it would have been impossible. The person would have had to intentionally rammed the car head on, even that would take some finess since there was a large light poll on the side it was hit that would have blocked an incoming car from just hitting my fender in that spot. The dent fits the shape of a cart...but just the level of damage makes me think this was intentional. They would have had to of wacked it with a pipe or bat to fit the shape of the dent. I looked around for items that might have been thrown & found nothing. Either way, this was someones fault...intentional or just carelessness.
skyhawk 11-14-2004 04:04 AM

Check to see if the stores parking lot has security cameras. BTW how is the spoiler coming. Do you have it mounted yet?

Is it possible that some careless person left a cart full of items unattended for a while, and then the cart rolls on a slight inclined surface ending up on your fender? Fully loaded, a shopping cart should be able to create that kind of dent even if it wasn't pushed hard.

I agree with the suggestion on security cameras.
Abetoy 11-14-2004 04:33 PM

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that man. I hope theres footage of whoever did that to your car.

Im actually in the same boat as you . . got a lil nasty 2-3 inch deep scratch and small dent on the same fender but mines is on the bottom portion where the fender and bumper meet :(

If you find a place that will sell you a fender, give me a heads up (i'll do the same). Im trying to figure out if its gonna be cheaper to just get it fixed @ a body shop or replace the whole thing.

Good luck!
tooocool49723 11-14-2004 04:41 PM

someone going cart bowling? putting cart in front of their bumper, driving to 20-25 or so mph, and then braking/turning/whatever. Cart goes straight, at (relatively) high speed. Possibly into a nearby WRB WRX?
adeliciouspizza 11-14-2004 04:56 PM

a word of advice... if you report it to insurance.. tell them you think it was a cart as that would go under comprehensive. if another car hit your car even if you werent there theyll try and put it under collision and youll pay more and theyll jack your rates up. happened to me so i have to think its a common thing. good luck. :)
Check to see if the stores parking lot has security cameras. BTW how is the spoiler coming. Do you have it mounted yet?
Not mounted yet. Shops been busy and hasn't been able to get me in...the spoiler is getting painted on Mon-Tues. I was getting pretty excited...but this fender situation just took all that away.

They only have security cameras in the front of the store...and I was parked pretty far away so I doubt it'll pick anything up. I'm going to get an estimate on either (A) Repairing the fender & paint or (B) Buying a new fender & paint. With the cost of a new one being only $129, it might just be cheaper to go with a new fender vs. to pay labor for them to bend it back out & risk it not being the same. From the looks of things the fender looks like its only being held on by 3 or 4 bolts...probably just cheaper for me to buy a new fender & paint & do the labor myself.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to see the estimates before I make a claim. I have a $500 deduct....I think I can get it done cheaper than that.
tooocool49723 11-14-2004 06:14 PM

oh snap batman!!!

I just remembered that you could tecnically sue the store for the damages. Their property + their cart = their fault in the eyes of the law. I'm not advocating suing people at random, but tecnically, you could.

(and if you choose this option, dont be dissuaded by signs that say "the store isn't responsible for damage due to carts" because even with those signs, their still responsible, and since I think i remember you saying that it was walmart, their a major store and would probably settle out of court).
DanBelford 11-14-2004 10:14 PM

That sucks man!!! The same thing hapened to me when my car was like three weeks old. Just gi to the dealer and get a fender. Thena have the bodyshop trim it with paint and install yourself. Then let them finish painting the car and fender. Trust me buy a new fender, they are inexpensive and there will be no bondo!!!
2k2 11-15-2004 01:05 AM

In response to dan:

while that might work on a new car. Unless his car is fairly new he wont be able to get it replaced like that. Because of the natural properties of paint to allow it to fade and the inconsistency with any mix of paint its almost certain he will need it blended into the door at least. Otherwise he would have the case of the fender just looking completely off from the rest of the car.

Also, I would advise against buying from a dealer, they will have a much higher price for the fender unless you have a hookup to get it for invioce. www.subaruparts.com usually has the best replacement part prices. i would also advise against painting the fender yourself because of the same problem listed above.

What I would do is go to the bodyshop and ask them if you bought the fender and did the labor yourself what the cost of painting would be. Ask them if you should install it completely or leave the trim off for them to paint it. Tell them you will do all the install and uninstall labor all they would need to do is tell you what step to leave it at to paint it. Some shops may be uncooperative because they will want that money, but there will surely be a shop that will help you out.

Also, for the comment above about a car or a cart. I was hit in a hit and run last year in a parking lot and when I came out to class I had over $1500 of damage to my car that was caused by someone unknown. I called my insurance company and they put it under comprehensive I use erie insurance in PA though. It could be different in other states but from what I recall a hit and run is supposed to be comprehensive because you as the driver have no fault and it should be the same as anything hitting your car other than another car. I could be wrong and it could vary from state to state.

Last, I would also advise against even thinging about a shop repairing the section. even if they claim they can repair it. Your damage is on a very defined body line. they would have to punch it out and bondy it perfectly to the body line and there is virtually 0 chance they would be able to match exactly to the other fender. There are actually 2 body lines under closer inspection and those are extremely difficult to repair perfectly.

Thats all
I always make it an effort to park far far away & this was no different.
I think this provokes some ***holes to screw around w/ ur car when they see it all out in the open by itself. Check security cameras like everyone else said...could get lucky and find out what happened
heavyDOODIE 11-15-2004 01:38 AM

sorry to hear about that. i also got a dent on both fenders. one was big, like someone was leaning on it-no paint removed- i guess they were trying to picture themselves owning their own WRX!!!
samwY 11-15-2004 02:14 AM

dude, I have the EXACT same thing on my fender. the situation was the same also, there was a shopping cart next to my car.

its very likely that immature fools banged your car with a shopping cart.

btw, fender is $140 from subaru parts, but shipping is another $40. then paint is another $150 or so...so its like $350 for a new fender.

I found one for $100 shipped painted already! Keep looking around and get a good deal. I been driving around with the banged up fender for 6 months. I just don't think $350 justifies a new fender. Good luck.
2k2 11-15-2004 02:26 AM

actually the fender is $130 well at least for the '02 but shipping is $40... im sure ou could find it cheaper possibly.

If your cool with your body shop you could see wha thier list price on a fender is and see if they will get it for you for that price. It shouldnt be too much more than $130...
MD04WRX 11-15-2004 05:42 AM

A good shop could fix that dent with no problem. If they blend the damaged area and clear coat the entire fender, you don't have to worry about color match. If you replace the fender with a new one, most good shops are going to want to blend the door and hood to match the color. This will make
the repair price much higher. Unless you can find a used fender the correct color in perfect condition (hard to do). Good luck.
sadbanker 11-15-2004 08:27 AM

Man that suks bad... I would call in and report it...
MF-DIF 11-15-2004 09:21 AM

It's a fairly new car...so color matching won't be a problem. I'm going to get some quotes today & see gauge the situation from there.
azimiut 11-15-2004 12:36 PM

most places say that they are not responsible for damages from unatended shopping carts. It has happened at my costco I work at. Im in the tire center, and we worked on this lady's car, after it came out, it was parked and hit by a fast moving cart from wind. it hit her R/R fender went down the side of the car and took her mirror off. the are was an E55 mercedes. she said we did it while working on the car, but we had video footage. and on every cart rack it cleary states the they are not liable. so look for a sign like that, if its not clearly posted, you can blame the store.
RezarS00 11-15-2004 01:50 PM

maybe a cart that blew all the way across the parking lot....but what are the chances.
Fijimunkii 11-15-2004 02:44 PM

I had the same kind of dent in my fender, but I caused the damages .

I paid a bodyshop to pop it out and repaint it, it looks perfect. Good luck in whatever you end up doing.
Bundyboyz 11-15-2004 05:44 PM

majority of stores will offer you a percent if you provide an estimate and say you'll sue... the signs don't mean a damn thing, unless your signing on a dotted line.

Reason being at least in Maryland... store parking lots are not private property they are public property because the general public can use them. The stores signs don't hold up.

Hence why you can get tickets for spinning your wheels in a parking lot... had that happen twice.
MF-DIF 11-15-2004 08:34 PM

It happend on Saturday. Probably to late to walk in and blame the store. I got a great deal for a new oem fender anyways. $135 shipped from Gwinnett Subaru. Factor in $90-100 for paint and I guess it was not that bad. Still over $200 I could have spent on a million other things then returning my car to its original condition on something not my fault.

How the hell did you spin your tires anyway...redline clutch drop? :D :p
Suby1128 11-15-2004 08:45 PM

I have a mark just like that on my front left fender also, and i'm pretty sure mine was from a shopping cart, only i think it was pushed really hard into it :furious: Although mine isn't quite as large as that, and the paint is only off where the cart hit it, so I've just left it because I don't have the money right now to put this into the shop to get it fixed
Synth 11-16-2004 03:48 PM

Sorry about the fender. :(

You have to look at the upside... maybe it's a sign that you should get a Wide Body Kit? :)
