Can I trust an automatic car wash?

Right, so I've got a hot date on friday and the saabaru needs to look as sharp as I do. Problem is that it's freaking freezing and she's DURTAY, like drove through a thunderstorm and then a dust storm dirty. I know the paint is delicate, so can I take it through your average car wash with a clear conscience, or should I nut up and brave the upper 30's temps to wash it by hand?

Brave the weather and wash properly! It looks millions better than an auto.

Hmm..I think that a automatic car wash is fine only if it is brushless. It does a pretty good job and leaves less scratches then washing it at home or at the regular ones (one that uses brushes.)

i got so many chips and scratches in my car from actually driving it so im not crazy about my paint. I take it to a brushless place and they do a great job.

if you dont mind swirl marks go for it esp if its a black car. if you have a sti i think the spoiler might get some abuse

I think the automatic carwash is a safe bet, but like these guys said, as long as it's brushless. My preference would be doing it by hand using a wool mit, but carwash is probably your best option for lack of time and weather.

Brushless is the way togo, avoid anything else like teh plague including washes where bodies wipe down your car with terry, ewwwww.
Also, brushless washes don't always remove that lowest sticky layer of dirt unless you have a good/smooth sealent(Klasse,Wolfgang,NXT) that was applied earlier.

I have fianally found a touchless auto that works well. It's 5 bucks, 6 if i run the driers. Car looks really good after, as long as it's not too dirty. IE: bad bugs, mud, bird ****.
Don't do a brushed wash. You'll regret it.

Tell me about it, first time I goto wash the car, I get the full treatment that includes brushed wash and terry terrorists.
Then after I learned teh folly of my ways I almost cried when I inspected my OBP for swirls. :o  :furious:

Glad I asked. Looks like I'm washing my car by hand as there's a layer or super-fine baked on dust that idoubt a brushless can touch. Brrrr, this is gonna suck, but it's def. for a good cause.

Brushless does a pretty good job of getting stuff off. Good ones use very high pressure water jets.
Nothing beats the good old hand wash, though.

my sister uses a brush car wash on her 325xi when she gets lazy :(

Go find a handwash place somewhere in town and let them brave the cold weather for you. That's what I do all winter long...

So what about us apartment dwellers? I am almost forced everytime to take to some place that washes it for me. Sometimes it's touch-less, sometime it's one of those DIY places.. I generally go late at night and then just spray down and hand wash. God help the person that uses one of those brushes. Winter just sucks for your car, unless you live someplace warm.

Make sure they have plastic runners on the rail.

Make your date wash your car... sit back and enjoy the view ;)

I personally would brave the cold and do it yourself (does suck). I just recently took mine to a brushless place cause I had a free coupon. The job was okay but nothing close to a handwash.

what I do if its cold is:
Take your car to a touchless carwash if its really dirty. Then when u get home do ur whole car in quick detailer, looks great and adds a little protection and it takes only like 15 mins

Wash your car in linear motions and you won't get swirl marks in the clear coat. NEVER and I mean NEVER take your car to a car wash. You'll be spending money on a haphazard process, and it screws your paint up.

The touchless/brush free automatics are decent if you need a fast wash to pretty up your car for a date or something. Otherwise, a real wash is better if you have half a clue.
| OneArmedScissor | 11-13-2005 07:16 PM |
touch free car wash or go to a hose n spray place and do that and finish off with a spot free rinse and wipe dry with microfiber. shouldnt take yu more than 15 minutes.

As long as the auto car wash is touchless, it's perfectly safe. However, it doesn't do a great job. I use these if I just want a quickie wash knowing that it's not going to be spotless. Avoid the auto washes that actually touch your car with brushes. They can scratch and leave marks.

actually this is not exactly true, alot of the spray ones and even the touchless ones use REALLY harsh chemicals when cleaning and will strip wax, and pretty much bring your paint back to ****.
