Most popular choices on here are Simple Green the engine bay first, let it soak, and then rinse.

I use Simple Green first and then hit it with my steamer :D
Eggas 09-16-2004 04:50 PM

Where can I get thta stuff from?
Hank3 09-16-2004 04:54 PM

Wal-Mart, Target, or any automotive parts store. Some have also reported that Orange-scented Degreasers work just as well too. You basically want a degreaser formula to help rid of that nasty stuff...
ydant 09-16-2004 05:03 PM

walmart :) beware, simple green smells horrible. I much prefer one of the other degreasers...

I too hate the smell of the original Simple Green, but a couple of weeks ago I picked up some yellow colored Simple Green (lemon I think) and it is about a million times better smelling than the other crap. Works great. Nothing like a blingin' engine bay!

ydant 09-16-2004 05:09 PM

nICHE! I'll have to check it out. The old stuff just effs with my nose and makes me feel sick. :(
Eggas 09-16-2004 05:17 PM

where you get that at mt?
V6TurboTA 09-16-2004 05:29 PM

Simple green doesnt damage any of the surfaces under the hood? I know it ruins pretty much everything else. ;)

I would be cautious when doing it...

I think it was at Target...

yadant, I know exactly what you are saying! Just something about the fake pine or whatever it is supposed to be that walks the borderline of putrid, and tolerable. I hate it... :furious:

Eggas 09-16-2004 06:56 PM

So is simple green not safe to use then?
Subie Gal 09-16-2004 06:59 PM

simple green is fine to use - i use it on all of my scoobs.. never had an issue.. yet.

it's non toxic

Don't forget to put a plastic bag over the Alternator before any pressure washing!

Peace

i just used it to take 13 years of grime off of my nissan's engine bay, the key is to (as other people said) is to put it in, let it soak, then rinse it off.

and i too like the smell.
kedrin 09-16-2004 10:47 PM

its perfectly safe.

i work at a carwash we use simple green for tons of stuf including carpet, engine bay, deep interior cleaning, and more.

just spray her down and rinse. For a like new look spray tire shine over all rubber and black surfaces for an awsoem look.
Nicklbrso 09-17-2004 09:08 AM

are there any precautions to take while doing this? Last time I did this to my older scooby the thing ran like **** afterwards. There was water in the plugs/boots :furious: . what should I cover up/look out for??
ptsmalls 09-17-2004 09:50 AM

yea, what exactly should i make sure to cover ie: alternater, my aftermarket intake tmic etc ?
2k2 09-17-2004 10:09 AM

I swear theres a carwash topic every week.

My car has 52k on it and I don't cover ANYTHING... just dont be a friggen moron and spray your alternator for 5 minutes with a high pressure washer. I have cleaned over 100 engines and never covered a damn thing and they all came out nice and clean with no problems.

Make sure your engine is warm so the grease and gunk will loosen up easier.
Hopefully you end up something like this: (old picture)

Nicklbrso 09-17-2004 12:18 PM

Mine is pretty dirty and needs a good cleaning.

Simple green is the way to go?
coolblue05 09-17-2004 12:18 PM

Wow, really clean engine bay. I too use simple green, I also use meguiars nxt rubber protectant on the hoses and black parts, really looks clean when done.
Eggas 09-17-2004 12:54 PM

I'll say! I always bag my alternator but the last engine bay cleaning something went dreadfully wrong and my alternator needed complete replacing. $900.00 later  BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL.
essogas 09-17-2004 04:39 PM

Do you people just blast water anywhere and cover the alternator? I want to wash my engine bay again but I'm paranoid now!
04.SPT.WRX 09-17-2004 04:46 PM

Simple Green works very well. Ive used it on my last 5 cars to keep the engine bay clean. If you start using it when the car is new, the upkeep is way easy. I use it maybe every other month on a cold engine rinsing thoroughly with a household garden hose. I do hit the alternator with a light spray or mist and have never had a problem. I've done the same with distributors as well - never a problem.

The only thing to be aware of is not to let soak & dry too long on aluminum. It can discolor and / or lightly corrode (worst case) it.
ydant 09-17-2004 05:11 PM

I don't get the alternator getting ruined from some water. They are made to take getting wet. Your hoodscoop doesn't have to be covered when you wash your car, either.
Eggas 09-21-2004 05:38 PM

Can you use Simple green on the underside of the hood?
Hank3 09-21-2004 11:47 PM
Can you use Simple green on the underside of the hood?
Yes - I just did this two days ago and have done so numerous times before :)
2k2 09-22-2004 01:46 AM

I use simplegreen (or any degreaser for that matter). For that pic it was before I had the pressure washer access. It was actually just a hose and lots of simple green. Now I clean it quite often so it never gets gunked up.

Ater I simple Green and it dried I use some Stoner Trim Shine and Lightly spray it all over. It leave a nice shine and looks great and you don't have to use much to hit it all.

Anymore questions just lemme know.
Eggas 09-22-2004 03:50 AM

Are you guys using the simple green in the spray bottle or the simple green fomaning for automotive? I am using the simple green foaming, and I have tried everything.
Getting engine really hot and letting it soak, but hte stuff just disolves. Power washing at car wash place.. Maybe I'll get the spray stuff.
subiekid 09-22-2004 04:04 AM

the comment on having a warm motor is bad. yea it might help to have a warm motor for getting junk off, but if its too warm the metal will cool to fast and can warp.
Hank3 09-22-2004 08:41 AM

I use the spray bottle kind.
RobertFusco 09-22-2004 08:44 AM

I didnt wrap anything, and washed my engine twice, w/ simple green automotive, From what I hear a alternator can work fully sumbersed under water given that the wires dont short out. i dried the engine using a leaf blower to get all the water out. looks pretty now :)
