if you had $15-20k to spend on an autox car... part 1

if you had $15-20k to spend on an autox car...
What car would it be? I was thinking about and early 90's 318 with a E36 or E46 engine and tranny swap, or maybe a 944 turbo s, or possibly an early 90's NSX. What do you guys think?
adhowe70 10-17-2005 08:50 PM

Stock S2000. Wait, I did that. It was sweet!

$20K wouldn't be enough for SM :)

NSX isn't that great an autox car AFAIK

Me personally... you could put together a pretty wicked SM2 Miata for $20K... or a very fun but not necessarily competitive GC-body STi swap Impreza for SM... maybe an ITR for DS if you have a garage... edit: oh yeah, stock S2K would be nice, can you get one and prep one for $20K?

Maybe this Miata that came thru the e-mail inbox last week? Past CSP National Champion car, in your budget range too. Downside is that it isn't a street car by any stretch...

This car is for my Dad and he won't be competing, only enjoying different tracks around the midwest and east coast. So it won't need to be a street car, it can be towed to the track. Right now he has an E46 and the lease is coming up in Feb. He doesn't want to lease another E46, he is waiting on the V8, but he would consider a car that he could take 4-6 times a year to say Putnam Park, Mid Ohio, Road Atlanta, VIR, maybe Barber Motorsports Park...

Spec Miata and DSP.

Shifter kart, trailer, travel/entry expenses.

That would be a lot of fun, but I doubt my 57 year old dad wants to race in a shifter cart.
AndrewSS 10-17-2005 11:02 PM

yeah what about doing spec miata... i dont know just how much it would cost but that would be fun stuff :)
bwagner 10-17-2005 11:04 PM

where can you find ANY NSX for that kind of money? Good Autocrosser or not, I'd go with the NSX if you found one for that low of a price that wasn't completely totalled
bushflyr 10-17-2005 11:58 PM

You could easily do a Factory 5 Cobra for that dinero. It could actually be competetive too. Not sure what class it would go in though. www.factoryfive.com and www.ffcobra.com
adhowe70 10-18-2005 12:10 AM

I will reiterate... S2000, A Stock. Its a decent daily driver when its not freezing and an excellent autocrosser. Oh, and stock for stock, it will outrun an E46 330 on the track. Especially with a hardtop on.
MattSTi 10-18-2005 12:20 AM

Not trying to be a smart ass, but I would buy/build a spec miata for ~10-12k, and buy a trailer for ~1-2k, and go road racing in SCCA and/or NASA spec miata classes. I crew for a spec miata team now and hopefully will be able to build one in the future. It is an awesome class with amazingly close racing and it is relatively cheap.

It seems to me that that is a lot of money to spend on a car that will only be autoxed. You could buy/build the spec miata, road race it when you want to, and still be able to autox it (i'm not sure what class, i'm not very familiar with autox).

I think that would be a really fun way to spend 15-20k. Thanks for everyones input.

May not be the absolute best (driver is really what makes it a champ though), but it'd be heaps of fun, and it keeps it in the family :D

no one has mentioned a C4 vette?!

Get a 96 Vette and enjoy. Your dad is just the right age too ;-)
itsawagon 10-18-2005 08:36 AM

E30 325is with some wicked suspension and tires
AtomicRacer 10-18-2005 09:34 AM

Early '97 e36 328is with no sunroof and no side airbags. Lighest version of the 328 would make an excellent STX car. You could max it out within the rules for under $15k including the price of the car.

I also vote for S2K. Or prep an STS Civic AND a C-Stock Miata. Should be able to do both for $20K

Another vote for a Shifter Kart

It's for his Dad? Did you people miss that point?

I'd go with a used Corvette. If he has a E46 M3 right now, he can afford a C5 Vette, maybe even a Z06.
Jaxx 10-18-2005 11:21 AM

another vote for shifter kart + 10-15K vacation

or
formula V +10-15k vacation

few things compair to
A: the speed of these cars/karts
B: the low low cost of spares/replacement parts
hauvis 10-18-2005 11:37 AM

Invoice price on new 06 miatas is around 20k depending on options. I looked at them last weekend and I was very impressed. Seems like Mazda really did a nice job.

Also it has 170hp and only weighs 2440lbs!!!!!!! That power to weight ratio is close to a stock wrx.

Well, why don't you enjoy the tracks with your pops instead of trying to make an autocross vehichle out of the car? I'd be looking for a car that would be reliable on track 4-6 times a year. That I have no experience except for the car I own a 02 wrx wagon been pretty reliable on 2 tracks this year hopefully more next year. You could always take it to an autocross too.

E36 with a supercharger, I think the Tunnel's make one.

Many of the guys that I race karts with are in their 50's.

Sure if you are used to racing in karts that's fine. I'm not sure how he could drop any more hints in the thread that a shifter kart isn't an option, yet people keep suggesting it...
BillT 10-18-2005 02:22 PM

You're the Million $ Man, you should have money than that for a auto-x car :)

obviously. i like it when people imply that autoXing is not a motorsport in its own right...as if it's just a stop-off before the "real" racing starts. plenty of people spend plenty more than that on dedicated autoX cars, and it's not for lack of means/opportunity to go road racing.

my advice? buy something already built and prepped. you'll save yourself a ton of money and time.
Homemade WRX 10-18-2005 09:10 PM

FSAE
and yes it can be done...quite easily...just need skills or buy a schools previous year car... Va Tech sells there's every year

and according to most cost reports (material, parts and labor) most cars fall in at about $15k

or spend $2k on an old impreza and spend $13k-18k on prepping it...
but personally preffer RWD for auto-x

Ford Formula
adhowe70 10-18-2005 10:49 PM

Formula Fords are very size dependent. I'm 6'0ish and 200 pounds with size 10.5 feet. I'm as big of a person as should expect to get into a Ford. The '82 Reynard FF1600 that I've driven is "snug" and I have twice grabbed a lot of brake and a lot of throttle at the same time because the footbox is very small. I've read that the newer cars are even smaller to cut the frontal area and increase top speed down straights.

But damn fun to drive!
Homemade WRX 10-18-2005 11:19 PM

we beat both ford formula's that regularly compete with us and we have a driver on the team who is 6-00 and 215...I'm 5-07 202...I'm a sparkplug ;)
anyhow, fit isn't an issue really until you get to being 6-04...
rautox 10-19-2005 07:22 AM

OK, forget what I said about the karts. Crazy talk, clearly

IMO, hands down a 89 C4 Corvette set up for BSP. You would be near the top the PAX index in just about any region. Engines have good torque and are a blast to drive. Engines are very reliable.

E30 BMWs have signficant suspension limitations compared with the newer E36s chassis. I had one of the quicker 2.5L E30M3 around, which ran in Street Mod.

Forget about Street Mod for 20K, you will a need lot more $$$ than 20k.
