pillar-less oem grille; new badge delete program (up-close pics)

she's back (i bought a used grille to try this on first...)
looks as smooth as stock; close color-match too

notice no lines or indentations!!
the whole grille was repainted and cleared

to save costs, i did NOT have the top filled in; it's nearly impossible to see, unless you get on your back!!

also had the area around the snorkel honed out a little bit, to aid with airflow....

installed.....

daytime pics to follow tomorrow or so, once i get some decent lighting....
thoughts?? interests???
happy holidays, sti brethern.

full-on shot..........

i will be trying to get a core-exchange going for this, as i already have a spare grille here. i will need about 120 for labor on your grille, plus some shipping to get it back to ya. sounds steep, but its done w/ automotive paint, and baked and then cleared (and then rebaked).... trouble/maintainence free finish!
the grille retains the stock mesh, unless you want the tighter weave stuff (like the intake scoop stuff i have)
i guess i could even offer scoop mesh, precut and/or painted too, now that i think of it.

very nice! I actually just did this to my 04 OBS and was extremely pleased w/ how it looked, I used some of that gutter covering painted black to keep the northern cali bugs outa my car:D

BTW, if you're going to sell more than one here, won't you need a vendor status thingy?

Do you think you could do this with a GC8 Ver 5 grille? I'd like to have the badge removed but still retain the original mesh or have something that looks like it.
| ESEMES | 12-26-2004 11:48 PM |
probably.
show some pics, if you dont mind, (in a pm, or an email preferably)
keep in mind, im having these done by a private shop, run by a few friends, im not doing them myself.

I've always like the idea of doing it. It looks clean & most people can't even figure it out. I actually did this aready to my 04 quite a few months back, but I had mine painted to match (silver) when I had my side skirts done.

it's NO INTRUSION AT ALL, really!!....
its not my usiness or anything at all.....
i just figured it'd help out others that didnt wanna do it themselves....
alyou need to do is to carefully dremel out the pillar that holds the badge, and then sand down the edges that are above the plane of the grille base, and then prep, paint, clearcoat, and then you're done....
also, i trimmed out the are around the snorkel, to allow more airflow in....
the reason mine's so pricey is because it's doen w/ automotive paint, and baked, and then clearcoated (no rattlecan at all)

Thanks.
Thanks.

I did this on my 04. I filled in the top w/ bondo though. I got mine looking pretty decent. Would rather have someone else do it. Not willing to dish that cash when i can buy a grill craft for that price.
<-----car got wrecked so i'm gettn an 05... i'll have to do it again :D wanna give a hook up and i can promote you? :D Just don't wanna screw it up.

p.s. wat samco hose is that to your intake? Not turbo inlet. :/ Do the 3 piece IC samco kits work on stis?

Dumb question and I hope I didn't miss the answer... But what grills work with 04 STi's? Is the 04-5 WRX, 04-05 RS, and 04-05 TS all fit the same? What about 02-03 models (obviously the hood is different thanks to the bug-eyes, but the grill might be the same)?

All the 04 + grills are the same...the 02-03 grills wont fit the newer models....

im in clearwater.
all grilles are 120, plus a fw to ship back.
the quality is superb, and is clearcoated as well. i can get them paint to match the body(for the surround/garnish, that is), but need a few more for that.
let me know
esemes
ps- i dont have any hookup deals , yet, as the pricing on them is pretty strict at the moment.
thanks for looking
pps- samco intake hose is about 90$ at staticXmotorsports.

BTDT, except for the honing of the snorkel area. did mine a week after i got mine. there is a DYI i think already on here and if not, there's one on WRXFanatics.com
i used the same flat black paint that i used when i clear my headlights. no problems.

Bump up. I'm definetly doing this! Looks way clean!
| Handsdown | 03-20-2005 05:18 PM |
you can't do it on an 02-03 because the place where the badge is mounted is part of the honeycomb pattern. you could cut everything out of it, and then add in mesh like the sti's but i don't know where to get that kind of mesh for a reasonable price.

Crazy...
I did this to my grille a few days ago, before I read this thread, 3 days after getting my 04 silver WRX. I was thinking of sanding down the top area where I sawed off the center piece and then painting it, but wasnt sure of it would look good. I guess it will : )!
But I must say two things about problems:
1- After the center piece is removed, the grille becomes bendy around the middle, so you have to be careful when installing it not to let the mesh fall off the frame.
2- I personally do not fully like the way it looks. The stock mesh is too far back from the front of the car. I have decided to get a thick, dense, gunmetal-colored mesh, clamp a silver metal frame all around the sides of it, and attach "brackets" all around the sides of the whole piece behind it (I might have to invent these brackets), then drill holes into the sides of the grill (about an inch in from the front), and screw the "brackets" into the sides of the grille about 3/4 inches in from the front.
I think that would look fantasmic.
And I suggest painting the horn a bright red. It looks great behind the grille.
weeeeee....modding is tooo much fun...

Hmmm... cutting out the part to increase airflow to the snorkel actually decreases airflow to the radiator. The snorkel can suck air, as it's connected to a giant vacuum... but the radiator requires air to be forced through it. Removing that section made it more difficult for air to cool the radiator.
As if a section that small mattered.

Homerisking, did you color match the grill to your PSM WRX or did you stay with black?
ESEMES, do you have any pics of color matched grills or do you just have pics of the standard black? By the looks of the pic you posted it looks like an Obsidian Black Pearl grill.
Quality looks great!! Is the deal still $120+shipping for standard black? What is the cost for color matching? I have a PSM WRX, BTW.
Thanks!!
