Great pics.

As a spectator this weekend I can say it was a very fun rally to watch. :)
anders8 09-29-2004 10:56 PM

Morgan: amazing, amazing. :)

This one from Arthur Partyka was pretty cool too. More of his over here:

Now THAT is a great picture if I've ever seen one!
Mopho 09-30-2004 09:42 AM

Actually, that is a LUCKY picture, right place at the right time
Thumper23 09-30-2004 09:46 AM

man, those are making me really miss CO

do I miss those dirt roads
zoomfactor 09-30-2004 10:07 AM

Nice photos! Some would make great full wall images.
and you can with the resterbator!
Which would be illegal!!! Now about removing that link!!!
anders8 09-30-2004 10:26 AM
Actually, that is a LUCKY picture
I'm not so sure. There are several others in the gallery there with similarly upset cars. Something about the turn must have been funky. I'd go with "If you call shooting this rally multple times, knowing this spot, and taking a hundred pictures here lucky", then yah, it's lucky. *grin*
and you can with the resterbator!
Hmmm... I had typed an angry response to this, but after examining the guy's website more closely, it appears he's not a professional, since there's nothing there about buying any of the images. So I guess the "resterbator!" would be okay if you get his permission first. (although I'm betting a print from the original full-resolution file would be a LOT better quality)

edit: sorry, I was talking about the "other" guy, not Morgan - please don't steal Morgan's copyrighted material.

Kevin - who's also a photographer, and deals with the same bs often...

If you are taking someone else's photo, without permission, and making a poster print from it, that is illegal. which is what Protege Menace is suggesting

Anders
Yes, I call that lucky. Knowing the spot is just being at the right place at the right time, the car going up like that is luck and not photographer talent

It is still a cool shot

I am not trying to say bad of Art, but like this shot I took...

...I just pointed the camera in the right direction and the car/driver did the rest, anyone who was there could get the same shot (assuming they know how to use their camera). Jump shots and cars on two wheels, etc. always make for exciting shots just by the fact that you don't usually see cars like that.
Shots with really good composition are what I consider telling of ones photo talent. IMO, of course, I am a bit more critical than most ;)
Mopho 09-30-2004 11:31 AM

deleted, double post

yeah, that's what I said... :p
Porsche914boxer4 09-30-2004 12:22 PM

Then don't post links to them without watermarks, if that's your concern
Mopho 09-30-2004 12:24 PM
Then don't post links to them without watermarks, if that's your concern
I do put copyright notice, that does not stop some people
Watermark or not it is still illegal
Porsche914boxer4 09-30-2004 02:28 PM

That's like leaving the doors to your car open with the keys in it saying 'it's still illegal if someone steals it' then complaining when someone does.
Mopho 09-30-2004 02:33 PM
That's like leaving the doors to your car open with the keys in it saying 'it's still illegal if someone steals it' then complaining when someone does.
NO! It is like going into a store and seeing something on a shelf and stealing it!!!!
Porsche914boxer4 09-30-2004 02:48 PM

No, it's like posting a picture on an internet forum with 70,000 members then complaining when someone DL's it and blows it up or posts it somewhere else without credit.

:)
Mopho 09-30-2004 03:24 PM

That is still stealing, and if they get caught they risk a lawsuit, plain and simple!!!!

Are you done yet?
Fred 09-30-2004 03:28 PM

How the **** else are the photographers supposed to advertise? You shoot a bunch of photos at a race, you hope to maybe sell a few to the racers or fans & make a little money, you put them up on the ****ing Internet.

Like mopho said, stores put stuff on shelves so that the customers have access to it. If you walk into a store, pick something up & walk out with it without paying, you get arrested.

Porsche914boxer4 09-30-2004 03:42 PM

You guys can make the moral high road argument all you want, but if a photographer is dumb enough to post a link to a high-res or semi-high res photo, and then try to sell it....gee, I wonder what people will do? hate to burst your bubble.
Mopho 09-30-2004 03:51 PM

The photos ARE low Res and don't make very good prints, but then Pro Menace posted some software that bypasses the low res "security" measure. That is just wrong and illegal if someone uses it in the way he suggests!!

I post my photos not to sell, but to promote the websites they are on, promote Rallysport, myself, and to provide entertainment but it is jerks with attitude like yours that ruin it for everyone.

If you are just trying to be a prick, go away!

Exactly. Skill is being able to pretty up a boring shot. Knowledge is knowing where to be to find a lucky shot. Lucky shot is when you photo something you only see once in 1000 cars. Great shot is a combination of all 3.

I am going to be in Japan for New Years so I am going to miss it. I have been mooching Speed channel at Ramanas and Vinnies houses, so I have managed to catch most of the WRC shows so far (next flat will have cable, damnit!). I will be at Rally Catalunia in person though :D
thechickencow 09-30-2004 10:25 PM

I figure I'll chime in and thank you guys for the great photos. For one, if/when I get a good picture of my car taken by any of the rally photo guys, I'm very likely to buy them. I think they receive decent support from the competitors as we all need pictures of our cars to help promote ourselves to sponsors and such.
Protege Menace 09-30-2004 10:35 PM

holy jesus

sorry, i didnt think it was that bad. that link had been posted many tiems before on this forum and eveyrone was printing pictures so i figured id post it.

it makes really crappy quality pics (read 1 cm dots) so i didnt think it was any harm

Have you used it? it really doesnt bypass anything, using paintshop you can blow up a pic and get better resolution than teh raster
mike270 10-04-2004 05:37 PM

Ok...my pics are up. Hope nobody minds me posting a link here.

Let me know what you guys think of them. They were taken with a simple point and shoot digi cam. I think the pics at the bottom of the list came out the best IMO. I like taking photos as a hobby and I am thinking about getting a nice digital SLR so any criticism or hints/tips would be appreciated. :)

Look good Mike. But why none of Car 701? Oh yeah, we broke a CV joint on the 2nd stage. :-(
Richard
mike270 10-04-2004 06:25 PM

hmmm...let me look to see if I got any pics of 701 before it broke. Were you the driver, codriver? I took a lot of pics and these were just the best ones I got.

What kind of car was it?
mike270 10-04-2004 06:35 PM

Just saw on the cog website that you ran a 1985 Saab 900 Turbo. What color was it?
mike270 10-05-2004 02:27 PM

I have updated the page that my pics are on so it is easier to browse through them :D

More Cog/Colorado pics ...
Pics I shot during my business/rally trip to Colorado can be viewed here - http://www.realautosport.com/pics/Cog2004/Cog2004.htm

Morgan caught Rebecca Greek and me in action on SS3 during Saturday's ClubRally in something other than an overweight, underpowered New Beetle -

- I have but one thing to say about running a car with an unrestricted turbo on Cog's SS3 - Holy WAAAA!!!

Then, another MJS shot during Sunday's ProRally action (I didn't have the $$ necessary for the Pro entry fee) -

.

- sorry, that's the best imitation of a spectator I can pull off.

Thanks again to MM navvie #19, Coloradon Rebecca Greek, who did a great job calling stage notes for the first time -

.

Morgan's pics are hosted on realautosprot.com with his permission ... Thanks Morgan!!!

Sorry Mike, what with the turmoil of this week, I just got back to this thread. It was the only Saab there. :) Silver over black. And unless you took pictures at the Parc Expose in town or on Stage 1 and 3, you didn't have a chance to see us. The CV joint blew apart at the spectator area on what was called Stage 3 (even though it was the 2nd stage run). We coasted to stop next to Bruce Davis who blew his engine. He called out to us that it sounded like we had an engine and he still had a transmission. Could we work something out?
Richard
PS: Thanks for helping out
