Crawford Performance: NASA Championships: Mid-Ohio part 1

Crawford/I-Speed 09-14-2006 04:04 PM

Crawford Performance: NASA Championships: Mid-Ohio
Ok so we have been a little quiet lately. Id like to say it was because we were all lounging poolside at the Playboy Mansion, but we werent:( Actually, we have been prepping a few cars for a few events, including our own 06 Widebody for the NASA Championships at Mid-Ohio, this Sept 11-17.

In fact, Dr. Russ Warr and William Knose are out there right now, playing in the rain, with the #66TTU Crawford Widebody Sti.
Not exactly sure how we will do, being this is our first time out at Mid-Ohio. But we look at this as an opportunity to head out into new territory make new friends, see more tracks, get some exposure, and okget out of the shop:)

Here are a few things we have noticed so far:
- Over 200 cars at the event, 65 or so are in the Time Trial Class
- There seems to be no other STis there, but its a big track with a lot of cars, so we may have not seen another one yet
- Z06s and other Corvettes are plentiful
- A few vipers, Caterham, radicals
- AMS and Buschur EVOs are present
- Raining for several days now. Currently sprinkles off and on
- Temps 65-70 degrees

Some Practice Session times:
1:37.364 AMS EVO
1:37.844 Crawford STi
1:39.613 Caterham

Looks like it will be a fun few days, even if it does continue to rain:confused:
We will try and post updates as much as possible. Don't worry, there will be Video too:D

Chris
Crawford Performance

For those not familiar with the event, here is a little background:
The toughest NASA competition in history will take place September 11-17, 2006 at Mid-Ohio. The newly created NASA Championships will allow competitors from all over the country to battle for the most coveted National Champion title in their respective classes at one of the most demanding and prestigious road courses in the country. For drivers, this will be a unique opportunity to measure their skills against the best of the best. Spectators will have a chance to see the finest racing action NASA has to offer as well as the opportunity to participate in special events throughout the week designed to give them a taste of the action.

Widely known as the "most competitive in the U.S.", Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is a permanent road course with both a 2.4-mile, 15-turn configuration and a 2.25-mile, 13-turn layout. Among the track's signature turns are the Keyhole, the Esses, Thunder Valley and the Carousel.

Cool, good luck out there. Mid-Ohio is a great track I love it.

Anyway, good luck - I look forward to seeing some video and pix :)

I think I am coming up on Sunday. Depends how motivated I am to wake up at like 6 am to get there for the first race.

Too bad SpeedTV has become a reality show channel, that might have actually aired this back in the day.

Good Luck!

Go and beat the AMS Evo, redeem the Crawford name(although I love you, heh)
PA04STI 09-17-2006 05:30 PM

Saw all the Saturday laps. The Crawford STi looked good out on the track even though running a stock engine 350-400WHP 350ish-400WTRQ.

Usually runs 500ish both HP & TRQ so was under its usual power

The AMS evo would run 1-2 laps and go in not sure think they had suspension issues. Look kinda like it wanted to drift weird around turns just my guess. The AMS team although we did not see have a funny setup they drive a big black chevy van that looks liek the A Team van and have the AMS Team on the side was looking for Mr. T but he was nowhere around.

A bushur backed evo got taken out by a Porsche I think Friday I was told by the Crawford guys. Oh and I saw it on a trailor look FUBARed...Side hit Tbone style.

Another red evo fromn Cali looked good but was not as fast as the Crawford STi. I seemed to be having clutch issues would spool up but really hesitate to get the power down...just a guess.

Overall, the one Crawford guy sorry forgot your name am a bad name person was really nice and shot the **** with me and my buddy.

was a fun two days alot of nice cars...

Oh and had another question for the Crawford team what do u use to compesate to run the belt with your A/C gone? Do you have a special bracket? I didn't get to look.

Matt

So where did they finish up? I can't find the results online.

Why a stock engine?

Congrats to the Crawford guys on an awesome run, I was kinda jealous that their STi had a full interior, I would have liked that on One Lap. :) Rus was giving the car hell that's for sure, and pushing for all it was worth. The Crawford guys told me after.. "hey we beat the rest of the Evos.."

The podium went Evo-Sti-Evo, with a Buschur/RobiSped customer in 3rd. The Buschur Time Attack Car broke, and Robi got taken out by a Porsche.

I would go in after a few laps usually because I would catch traffic within 2-3 laps, but Sunday the Alternator had gone dead, and that's all the car would run on a battery. The reason it looked like it was trying to drift would have been the first hot lap on cool tires, to get the car to rotate we threw some toe-out at it, which was tricky till the tires got warm. After that it was smooth sailing though. We had no issues other than the alternator, and the Ohlins did great on the car.

The crawford guys had the diff go, which caused a mad scramble and they did a great job putting it in Sunday morning at 8:45.

Yeah saw the car getting the battery charged and jacked up on the one side so just assumed it may have been a suspension issue..my bad. We stoped to bull**** my buddy who came with me has an 06 MR but no one was around.

Love the ATeam looking van we also where looking around for Mr T & Murdoc but no luck either.

We actually left Sunday right in front of you guys WRB STi with SH0CKER license plate...buddy tried to get your attention.

Funny thing is there was a Silver & Blue S4 that was smoking fast on Sunday and won its class by a landslide but when it was out with you guys on Saturday the evos and STi made it look slow. Amazing how fast you guys run.

Sucks for the Buschur guys his car look pretty F'd up on the trailer, but I guess it could have been worse.

It also sucks there are so few STis and evo at the track where they belong, but watching you guys I feel when they become more affordable (older) to turn into dedicated track cars there are going to be alot of them out on the track. Just listening to all the people saying damn those evos and STis are quick. I would bet quite a few racers are taking notes and will go with both these machines down the road they are just too pricey & new right now.
So where did they finish up? I can't find the results online.

Mike
Well probably they had to freshen up the engine that was in it. That thing gets driven very hard probably for a year or two. So I would guess it needed freshened up. but even though under powered compared to race engine it was fast.

I am amazed they where that close to the AMS evo. The Crawford STi has full interior all the evos where beyond stripped even some with lexan windows etc. and the STi had full interior even STi seats and if I am not mistaken door cards the power windows etc...and was on a stock engine. only thing gone was A/C. So it is alot heavier then the Evos. Also runs factory diffs (2004) diffs since that is what year it is just has 2006 body on it APR widebody too of course. One of the Crawford guys was showing me the Air/oil catch can setup Crawford just came out with...to me I think its a great idea and I think down the road what I am going with.

I understand its $350ish range but it does alot more than a catch can. It actually puts the air back in the intake and oil back into the engine instead of into the can to be emptied. I mean the oil goes where it belongs not in a can to be emptied thus losing oil everytime. looks real nice too in the blue. Plus its one can unlike the two catch cans that should be use in the STi.

I know alot of people badmouth Crawford I must admit I did too in regards to the engine warranty or lack of one with their built engines, but they represent the STis day in and out at the track and are one of a few teams that continually race their STi or even Subarus at the track showing how capable the STi/Subarus are. How many other companies do that? (GOTO & ESX day in and out) other do here and there and I understand it is expensive and the cars themselves are expensive to track.

Plus the one guy forget his name (sorry) took the time to talk to me for like 30minutes -1hour about my plans for my STi and the setup in their STi.

I give a big hand to these teams that show what Subarus are capable of cause nothing feels better then seeing one of the cars you have out on the track dominating. And the same thing goes out to the evo teams cause there is no hatred here...

Love seeing these cars overall change the minds of race people (domestic, NASCAR, people etc cause they where impressed at MidOhio and gave you guys props.

I could honestly care less about either of them. I am currently a NASA member, but thats only because you have to join to do DE's.

I do think alot of NASA's problems right now can be blaimed on growing pains. They've gotten better over the years, and I think they will continue to get better as time goes on.

SCCA just needs to get younger, and lower their damn membership rates.

Ok, so maybe I care about some things.
trhoppe 09-19-2006 12:07 AM

Hehe.

I blame NASA's problems on one thing. Instead of trying to LEARN from the SCCA and copy things they do correct, they just hate everything SCCA and do everything their way. Because of that, they screw up some very basic things that are perfect in the SCCA. They do some stuff better, but still have a long way to go. They are definetly not a "better" or "replacement" club for the SCCA, but are just another sandbox that you can play in.

true. I think NASA is a better place to start the racing process (HPDE's and what not). I also like the fact that they give more places to race with all the classes they run. Although from what I understand, some of those classes may be going away.

SCCA attempted the whole HPDE thing to keep up with the new kid, and it really (at least in my region) hasn't picked up at all. I wish it would, but don't forsee it. They had talked about lumping it into a regional race weekend, and there is just no way they can make it work. They've tried to do it on its own, or even piggy back with another marque specific club, and they just can't get it to fly. Maybe its just my region. AutoX is pretty big here.

I would like to thank all the guys at Crawford and I-Speed for the help with the car...... 2nd place in TTU......we lost the rear diff the last session on Thursday and did not verify till Friday warm up so we lost all track time on Friday. No Subaru dealer within 100 miles of the track had a rear diff so we next day aired the diff from ELVIS the dyno car at Crawford Performance and Bill and myself got the diff 8:45 Sat morning and made the 10 AM warm up...... With the limited track time I am very happy we did well. We went there wanting to win but hats off to Jon and the AMS guys they had a very prepped and professional car. Jon I think we need to hang out more so I can help you gain some weight!!!!! We weighed in abound 350 pounds heaver then the AMS evo and both Buscher evos. I thin Pat in TTA with the Audi weighed in at 2950 with driver...... Jon Stokes in the caterham was unger 1800 pounds with a ford Z tec motor......it was like a gokart on steroids. We will be better prepared for the run next year as it will be back at Mid Ohio again. Not sure of the dates yet. The big bummer of the weekend is someone stole 3 new Kumho tires from our pit one night!!!!! We also missed the awards as they were supposed to be Sat night but last min changes pushed it to Sunday morning and we had 8AM flights back to California.

Phil from Phils tires was a big help as well as Robi from Robispec and Dieter the other Evo driver from California... I would also like to thank Greg from NASA for all of his hard work the best part of the weekend was to see the grid for the last day. The car class did not matter we rolled out on the track in possesions from our best lap time from the previous sessions...... it was Evo, Evo, Sti, Caterham, Z06, Z06, Z06, Z06 ETC....... so basicly the first 16 starters were import " " " " then the vetts...... it was pretty cool when Robi had to start from the mid pack on day 2 all the vet guys were pointing him by on the warm up laps...... we got some great pics and some good in car video that will be up soon.

Tom the parts did not make it in time but will be on the car soon!!!!!! Lower is better and you can never have too much Caster....

Again thanks for all the support and we will get some more info up as soon as possible!!!

I will have to go with PA04STI on this one. I wasn't a huge supporter of Crawford, primarily because of all the things I heard ( i know that's not too fair but at least I am honest :) ) But i keep seeing all these other people trash talk them but then where are all these people at events like this? I know where those people are, they sit behind the computer and talk more trash while others are really out there supporting the car we apparently love too
My hat's off to Crawford for going out there, shutting up all the smack talkers and making sure people know Subaru is a force to be reckoned with at the track:D

What their tires got stolen? WTF?! Maybe it would have been worth it to drive 6 hours to the track to divert a theft. At any rate, one thing i learned from working the speed world challenge is, never leave anything unattended or not secured...things tend to walk off and sabotage does happen.

TTU Results:
1) Jon Krolewicz AMS Evo: 1:34.366
2) Russell Warr Crawford STi: 1:35.662
3) Dieter-Heinz Kijora, Mitsu Evo: 1:36.257
4) Jon Stokes, Caterham 7: 1:36.406
(not sure about 5+ not listed by class on the site)

I was first overall in the AMS car, Warr was 4th overall in the STi, Dieter was 5th overall.

Is there a place where the weight of these cars is posted?
racerjon1 09-20-2006 06:15 PM

AMS Evo, with driver 3020. That was with a couple gallons of fuel, and me at 153lbs.

Empty weight (no fuel, no driver) is 2850 right now.

(This week anyway.. soon to come, carbon door skins, and lexan windows.. should drop another 100 lbs or so)

I think I remember the Crawford guys saying they were still in the high 3300 range.

Jon K
jrerin 09-21-2006 12:11 AM

With thin little me in the car we were 3388..... I am around 225......or so......

There is a long way to go to loose some weight with the car...we had the a/c system out of the car but everything else was in it......

I did take the car seat out of the back!!!!!

Not sure how much fuel was in the tank but 1/2 would be a good guess.

"It also sucks there are so few STis and evo at the track where they belong, but watching you guys I feel when they become more affordable (older) to turn into dedicated track cars there are going to be alot of them out on the track. Just listening to all the people saying damn those evos and STis are quick. I would bet quite a few racers are taking notes and will go with both these machines down the road they are just too pricey & new right now ..."

If any of you can get to Mid-Ohio to take a few videos/experience the thrill of high speed driving ... you won't regret it.

Over Labor Day weekend, I took my 06STI to Indiana's Putnam Park for the Porsche Club HPDE event ... my first time for high performance driving ed.

Unfortunately, I could only stay for the day 1 of 2 (Saturday), getting there first at 6AM ... sunrise ... clear, cool morning ... think "A Field of Dreams ... instead of a baseball field, a racetrack with 10 great turns, a stable full of instructors happy to share their dedicated track cars ... including one instructor with a turbo 911 who couldn't believe that his car could not shake an unmodified 05STI ...

These 2.5 liter Subaru engine are amazing ... nothing beats going down the "runway" at 120+ mph ... except passing a few Porsches along the way then heading into turn 1 ;-)

Some highlights:
> an 07 MTI-prep'd Z06 ... he was there for both days ... conversation centerd on how some hoosier slicks should add 40+- hp to that 500hp beast
> being a passenger on a '83 track-prep'd 911SC ... nothing like hi-mph powerslides ... except of course, being the driver of long, long powerslides

Love learning the line ...
