What suspension do you use in your rally car? Looking for PGT setup for an Impreza L.
Out of curiosity, what suspension setup do you guys use in your Imprezas? The Impreza L I purchased came with stock blown struts and really soft/lowered 5Zigen springs that I desperately need to replace.
I was looking into the DMS40 or Leda Gas Rally setup...my budget is in the $2000 (or less) range and I was wondering if I could have some input as to what would be a good "starter" suspension.
Basically, I need new suspension now. I'll be doing autocross, rallycross and ice racing this Summer/Fall/Winter and won't actually start ClubRally until Spring. So, should I just get a temporary cheap setup now or go for a full blown adjustable setup immediately?
The problem is, I'm not that familiar with all of the different brands of adjustable suspension. I'd just go with the DMS40 but I've heard reports of problems (leaking, etc.).

Also, since I'm new to the ClubRally thing, do I even need adjustable? Is spending $2000 for suspension on my first rally car complete overkill when stock RS struts and coilovers would suffice?

I hear that any strut works great with some coilovers that are purchesed locally. :D :p
| travmn | 07-30-2002 03:39 PM |
dms are highly recommended and not overkill... suspension can make/break a rally car... if you could afford it, dms 50's... otherwise the dms 40's should do fine.
| Jon Bogert | 07-30-2002 03:41 PM |
If your suspension budget is $2000, then take $500 from your engine budget and get the DMS 50mm rally suspension. There isn't anything you can do to your engine for $500 that will make you faster without a real suspension than with one.
| Sean | 07-30-2002 03:48 PM |
Yeah, I'm looking at the DMS50 right now over at Primitive Racing for $2400 (unless you can think of a better supplier). Last time I looked, I found DMS50 for around $3500 to $4500 and that was way out of my price range...I found them for $2400 just after I posted the previous question. :D
So, the Primitive Racing site mentions that "DMS products are direct replacement parts fitted without modification to original equipment." Am I correct in thinking that this simply means unbolting the old struts and bolting the DMS50s up to the stock points? I've seen "direct replacement" suspension setups that required new top hats.
Thanks all!

OK, so can Exeter supply those or do I need to keep looking around for them? Also, just to make sure, the DMS50 with STi top hats is still PGT legal, yes? It says that the suspension is pretty much open, but I just want to make sure that I don't go and drop $2500 and find out I can't use it.

you could also try avsport... dunno their prices on the DMS suspension bits, but they should be able to supply everything you'll need.
IIRC there used to be a limit on the suspension in p/pgt, but it's not there anymore (at least, last time i looked through the rule book i didn't see anything, but i'm known to miss some glaring detail)

I'm in the Production class ...
50mm's
STi tops...
and it's totally legal....
suspension is free as long as you use the stock mounting points... thus even on my FWD L i can use the DMS....
and i would not recommmend any other suspension for rally...
unless your budget was 10k.. then get ohlins. :D hehehehee
and yes, you need adjustable coilovers...
likely you will rarely change the ride height
but you WILL change the dampening...
if you dont... ya not doing it right :)
and why spend $400-800 on a temporary fix that handles like crap? rally is different than autox, etc... if you get a good rally set up you will be blown away by how different and how much better the car handles off road. it's like night and day...
have u spoken to Dave Clark - DMS USA - about his pricing?
I can chat at him tonight if you like...

That'd be much appreciated...haven't spoken with him yet (talked to Exeter and fired email to a bunch of other places). I'd be looking for shipped pricing (zip code 02421) for the DMS50 with STi tops. I was basically going down the list at the DMS site for distributors and looking at Web sites. Didn't see a Web site for DMS USA (maybe I'm just blind). :D

Exeter can definitely get you the STi top hats. And I havent checked with him in a while, but last time I asked Dave for pricing on DMS 50s he quoted me $2800 + shipping, and that didnt include top hats.

If i had the choice between stock engine or stock suspension, i would stay stock engine and spend every penny on the suspension.
Tyres and suspension is where the big speed gains come from, there is no point having a great engine if you cant keep the car on the road or tyres gripping properly.
DMS is very good stuff, the 50mm kit is what your really want. We run 3 way adjustable proflex on our GroupA car but you'll need $9K for that! It takes much more setting up too, it's not the right kit for a starter.
Spend your money on good suspension from day 1, its worth the investment!

Sean, I believe Exeter's price on the STi tops are $125 front, $125 rear (or $250 for 4 :D). I'll grab a set if you want to pay by plastic over the phone for you when next I'm there :).

Sean,
We run the Sti top hats with the DMS 50s. This was my first race with this setup. I cannot think of any way to go at the price point you/I are talking about. The suspension rocks. With my stock 1.8L, I was able to drive with my foot to the floor for a lot of the stages and soak up some big rocks and land some big air.
Exeter should be able to get you both the DMS and the tophats. You can also get DMS from www.rallyperformance.com.
Cheers! John

OK, due to the overwhelming recommendations for the DMS50 and all the email feedback I've gotten on the Leda (see attached pic), I'm 99.9% sure I'll be going with the DMS50. Now to find a supplier. ;) Right now my choice is Exeter because they're local but I'll still be calling around for prices. :D

The rally spring rates are much lower than those crazy Jap-spec coilovers everybody is running. Dial back the damping a bit and it's very streetable. Plus you never have to lift for bumps. :D

What does it cost to rebuild them???
| iceweazel | 08-01-2002 03:13 AM |
Bah! Rim was silky smooth this year. Lack of rain kept that
lovely concrete consistancy away.
Dunno what they cost to rebuild, but asking Dave is probably the secret there. And with all the cars I keep seeing with Stock
Suspensions lately at club events... *shudder*...

I have the KYB AGX/ Ground Control setup on my L. I love the setup. Affordable and very adjustable.

That's nice. Is your L a rally car that routinely does 80 MPH down rutted gravel roads and occasionally gets two to three feet in the air? ;)

Yup. They're not even Boston ready. I destroyed a set in under a year. I wont ever buy Japanese struts again.

This is i guess what we will be using as well for our car.
YOu might want to check this thread out, being you are going to rally your car in PGT.

I know that there is nothing there right now due to me just posting it, but hopefully there will be lots of info soon.
Thanks

So who does have the best price on the DMS50's? I heard you can get them for as low as $1100.00 is this way off?

If you can find them for $1100 give me the supplier NOW! Most places have them for $2450 to $2800 before tax/shipping. The DMS40s can be had for $1100 to $1800 but those aren't suitable for rally and even have the habit of blowing up on hard autocross courses.

On a side note, rallyperformance.com starts at $2800 on them. I believe spdtuning.com is around $2500 even though they're not on the site. Exeter (subaruwrxparts.com) doesn't stock them but basically said they'll beat any price for me because I'm local and a loyal customer.

Primitive DMS 50mm
1 Attachment(s)
Sean,
You can certainly run KYB-AGX with Outback Sport springs and get through a begining season of Clubrally. You will probably blow or bend a strut at some point, but at a hundred bucks a pop, it is still economical. Unless you plan to jump like Jamie, the AGX will last, we raced 2 seasons on them and won a National PGT title...
But as Jon (and others) points out above, if you have any engine mod budget, spend it on SUSPENSION. We now run more than an entire season on DMS 50mm without having to rebuild, although doing it more often can't hurt. I have run DMS 50mm longer than anyone else in the USA (even before Pat-R was running it). I have yet to destroy one. The biggest repair was replacing an adjuster. (unlike my photo of LEDA's that you posted above).
Figure out what your budget will bear and don't skimp on SAFETY, BRAKES and SUSPENSION.
I do have DMS 40mm in stock, but that is only for STREET use (and rallyX). My heavy duty top hats are still only $239 for all 4 (same low price for last 3 years).
Visit the price list at http://www.get-primitive.com for all parts available for Impreza and WRX.
