Cusco front license plate relocator kit

Anyone know where I can get one of these?
| Uncle Ben | 11-25-2003 06:20 PM |
What does it look like?
| imminence | 11-25-2003 06:26 PM |
It's a bracket that relocates the front license plate off to the side a little bit so it doesn't totally block a FMIC.
| Uncle Ben | 11-25-2003 06:28 PM |
Oh... I wasn't aware anyone made a kit for that, I thought they were all custom bolt on bracket jobbies. Does it relocate it to the foglight area? I wouldn't mind picking up one myself if it's cheap.
| imminence | 11-25-2003 06:36 PM |
From what I know, it relocates the license plate to the area between one of the foglights and the front (where the FMIC would sit).
| norseone | 11-25-2003 07:16 PM |
Just get the EVO front license plate setup. A couple screws and you are golden.
| imminence | 11-25-2003 07:21 PM |
Doesn't the Evo bracket screw directly to the front of the bumper though? I don't think I'd want to do that. The Cusco one screws to the underside of the large front opening, so you wouldn't be able to see the hole if you ever wanted to remove the bracket.
| Si2Rex | 11-25-2003 09:27 PM |
any links? pics? I am about to but the evo plate holder but if this one mounts where the holes are not visable then I am all over it!
| scoobydorift | 11-26-2003 12:09 AM |
what about the licence plate holders that rotate when you go faster and faster. you should get one of those!.
btw i know what you are talking about, its called and offset licence plate holder, but i cant remember where i found it.

Still unclear if you need to drill holes in the bumper to put this plate holder on. I wouldn't mind picking one up if I didn't have to drill any holes in the bumper.

Yes, you have to drill at least 2 really small holes to make sure the plate stays firm. The bracket has been on for at least 3 months now - and not a problem so far. The cool thing is that I realised that now, my front license plate takes the damage instead of my front bumper.

Yeah, into the front bumper. But with the cops getting big on us, I rather my license plate upfront all the time.

Might be nice to use the tow eye to mount something like this...
| Chaste Automotive | 11-26-2003 11:13 PM |
A Couple of people have used the tow eye to fab up a bracket the only issue I heard was that because it does no sit flush it will get caught if you take it to the car wash.
| philw007 | 11-27-2003 12:55 AM |
Best would be a custom bracket that fits the tow socket...

Okay, after I let everyone in on this, no one will ever be able to say that I didn't do my part to help my fellow Scooby owners out! (Not like I didn't do my part w/the lengthy "headlight mod" directions I posted up a while ago! ;)
Anyways, I don't want to hijack JIN's thread or badmouth his JDM/Evo front plate method, but instead of using the EVO 8's bracketry and drilling holes into your WRX's bumper, I have another idea!!
****Get a set of aftermarket foglight covers and mount the front plate to that instead**** You can do it on either side, but most people seem to doing the JDM front plate look on the driver's side.
NOTE: I haven't tested/done this foglight cover method yet, but by looking at the positioning of front plates on real JDM Subarus (from Japan) in pics, it looks like it would work!
Projected Required Materials/Parts:
***One Foglight Cover (desired side of mounting: passenger OR driver & PREFERABLY "mesh" not solid cover style for ease of installation--i.e. use pre-existing holes in mesh to fit screws or nuts & bolts)
***aforementioned screws or nuts & bolts to secure plate to foglightcover
***front plate-----DUHHH!! :p
Advantages of mounting the front plate to a foglight cover would be:
***no drilling unsightly/PERMANENT holes into front bumper
***completely reversible mod (just unscrew plate from foglight cover & remove screws &/or foglight cover)
***mod would work on just about ANY car w/foglight covers, incl GC8's & recent WRX's (2002++)
***unobstructed airflow & optimum cooling for FMIC & radiator
Only disadvantage I foresee:
***You would lose use of one foglight, but *most NOT all* front mount intercoolers require removal of both foglights anyways.
I hope someone tries this soon and posts some pics. I'm a little too busy or else I'd try it myself.
If it it does work, I hope I get credit for it...i.e. "CLsmooth71 front plate mod??" yeah, I'm an attention whore! :D

i made mine from a $5 piece of aluminum and two screws. it comes through that little hole in the front bumper. there is also a second brace that comes from the back of the plate and tucks underneath the fog cover.
this may not work (no direct links), if not look at the link below.

One disadvantage I see is its even easier for people to steal your front plate...nothing to unscrew...

This is actually the excuse I use to not run a front plate here in communist Virginia. My plate translates into "rice mobile", so I say that somebody stole the thing because it was funny.

I just sent an email to a contact who made one of these that attaches to the tow hook spot on the front bumper. I'll post up any info he gives me.

JDM Front Plate Install Update

Ok guys. This sounds too easy. I received this email from Sean @ Suby Specialties:
Well, its kind of hard to explain exactly how I made it. I got the tow hook that goes in to your front bumper and bolted a piece of sheet metal to it. He wanted it done right then so I had to use what I had laying around the shop. If I was going to make another one I would get a bolt that would thread into the same hole and weld a strip of .125 thick metal to it. Then just drill holes in it for the plate. It would only take about 5 - 10 minutes to make as long as you have the right size bolt to thread into the tow hook hole.
Sean
I just need someone local who has a welder. Hmm...maybe my brother does. As soon as I install it I will post up some pics.
:)

you may also want to look at this - its not a side mount but a "state of the art bracket" that flips the license plate out of the way at speeds over 80kmh .. would allow more air flow at high speeds -

That looks pretty cool, but I'm not sure if it would clear the FMIC on my car. I'd rather take the safe route. Thanks for the link though.

Simple hinges from Home Depot get the same result (this is a common mod over at miata.net). Still illegal as the plate is not visible, but obviously reduces the amount of heat you'd get.
